Millions were traumatized by the unprecedented horrors and loss of life the war delivered in such a short time. This trauma explains the introversion the American public experienced concerning involvement in the new conflict brewing across Europe in the late 1930s. Comic covers such as this, in which Superman seems to be battling against war as a concept rather than against a defined enemy, were common in the pre-Pearl Harbor days. This Superman image is a far cry from the beefy, smiling patriot soon to grace WW II DC covers, and still startles with its raw emotion and power. This is yet another extremely rare early Action comic that commands top dollar on the Golden Age market.
