rare!! classic WWII concentration camp cover; Hitler app.
Jon Berk Collection
The Destroyer was one of Timely’s big heroes during the wartime era, his exploits were very much in the vein of his counterparts, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, and Captain America, but the character did not prove to have the staying power of the trio of heroes that ruled the roost at the publishing house. Created by a young writer by the name of Stan Lee, The Destroyer has become somewhat of a cult darling, with a loyal fanbase who collect his comics with great fervor. This cover is a true classic of the era, Al Gabrielle’s illustration is true to the Timely house style of the 40s, chaotic action, demonic Axis villains, and blazing colors adorn this amazing WWII collectible.

This very copy sold last year in the Jon Berk Auction for $3411.

Artists Information

Mike Sekowsky was an American comics artist known as the penciler for DC Comics' Justice League of America during most of the 1960s (including their initial appearance in Brave and the Bold #28), and as the regular writer and artist on Wonder Woman during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sekowsky's long career began in the early 40s for Timely Comics drawing the adventures of Captain America, and Sub-Mariner among others in titles such as All Winners Comics, Daring Comics, Marvel Mystery Comics, and Young Allies Comics. He would transition to DC Comics in the 1950s where we would work on Romance and Science Fiction stories including drawing the first appearance of Adam Strange in Showcase #17. He would co-create the Justice League of America with Gardner Fox and continue as it's artist for over 60 issues. Sekowsky would go on to have memorable runs as artist and writer on Metal Men, Wonder Woman, and the Supergirl feature in Adventure Comics.

Primarily and inker in the Golden Age Gabriele worked with industry greats Jack Kirby and Alex Schomburg, contributed to Sub-Mariner and Captain America Comics and helped create Miss America and Black Marvel. Last known work in comics in 1949.
