classic Burnley WWII Nazi periscope coverWe can think of few things more entertaining to look at than terrified Nazis, and these two goose-stepping fascists have plenty to be worried about. It is unlikely there is another Golden Age Superman cover that shows the Kryptonian hero in such a state of agitation. The simplicity of comic storytelling is beautifully displayed on this gripping Jack Burnley cover, it is evident the Nazi submarine has just sunk an Allied ship, not a warship mind you, but likely a supply ship carrying civilian mariners, and the Man of Steel is coming for them, and he is probably going to tear their sub to pieces. That storyline is transmitted through the snapshot image that defines a comic book cover, and this one is a powerful piece of wartime propaganda, which would have roused the spirits of soldiers in the field and their families back at home to defeat the sinister threat of the Axis and their misguided desire to take over the world and create a master race.

Joseph Shuster was a Canadian-American comic book artist best known for co-creating the DC Comics character Superman, with writer Jerry Siegel, in Action Comics #1.
George Roussos also known under the pseudonym George Bell, was an American comic book artist best known as one of Jack Kirby's Silver Age inkers, including on landmark early issues of Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four. Over five decades, he created artwork for numerous publishers, including EC Comics, and he was a staff colorist for Marvel Comics.
