FANTASTIC FOUR 1961-96 Issue #3 Interior Page

By the time Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had launched the Fantastic Four, both were already industry veterans. Lee started at a young age banging out text pieces for Golden Age Timelys in between running errands for the understaffed publishing house, while Kirby had almost single-handedly invented the crime and romance genres while crafting a mountain of classic characters for National, Timely, and others. Both creators were hungry to leave their mark on a moribund industry, making these early FFs a perfect combination of storytelling chops and bold ambition.

This page is a nearly flawless example of comic book craftsmanship, taking what could have been a drab, straightforward sequence and giving it speed, excitement, and focus. Kirby makes his unlikely hero, the Thing, both grotesque and relatable, his everyman posture and endearingly shabby topcoat giving heft and scale to his outsized presence, a perfect contrast to the smug, sleek grace of the Miracle Man. Sol Brodsky provides a clean, stylized line to tidy up Kirby's famously blunt pencils, making both Ben Grimm and his magician antagonist distinct characters. Silver Age Marvel pages are very hard to obtain and this page, featuring one of Kirby's most famous creations front and center, is a guaranteed draw for serious comic art enthusiasts.
