Bob Kane cvr/art; classic hypodermic needle/bondage cover (1/40)
The book's jarring cover inaugurates a tradition that has remained nearly undisturbed to the modern day, with the Caped Crusader as the featured star of this venerable title. This classic image captures all the gruesome drama and atmosphere beloved of year-one Batman and shows why the character quickly vaulted to the top of the collective consciousness of Golden Age comic readers. The horrific mood and tone of the inaugural Bat-tales give them a feel unlike anything that came after, directly inspiring the early-70s Adams revamp and the look of the blockbuster 1989 movie. The hero's booming popularity is evident not only in his cover appearance but by the bright-red banner assuring readers he would appear in every issue thereafter.
Marking the turnover of Detective Comics and cementing it as Batman's title, this book is emblematic of Batman's darker, pre-Robin tales. The shocking cover was sure to rattle readers as it loomed over newsstands in 1940's America, offering a tantalizing brew of fear and excitement that readers could count on monthly as Batman graced the cover of every issue of Detective Comics hereafter. This cover also serves as a precursor to later horror titles that would be blunted by the Comics Code Authority. Needles penetrating vulnerable necks was sure to be a no-no. This copy looks spectacular despite the pieces out of the front cover, the green has a rich tone and the yellow is surprisingly bright.

Overstreet Guide 2018 G+ (2.5) value = $19,500.

Artist Information

A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
