classic Joker cover; 1st app. Mad Hatter, Vicki Vale; Comic Book Impact rating of 7 (CBI)Bearing one of the more exotic of the early Batman covers, issue #49 offers a great deal of action and, most notably, the first appearance of Jervis Tech aka The Mad Hatter in "The Scoop of the Century," which also prominently features the debut of Bruce Wayne's love interest Vicki Vale. Also included are "The Prison Doctor," and "Batman's Arabian Nights" which involves the Joker and a fantastic trip to Baghdad, Iraq. The cover illustration is quite surreal and atypical compared to others from the period, portraying the Joker as a genie in a lamp, looming menacingly above the Caped Crusaders as they cower in fear. The colors on the cover of this copy of Batman #49 are intense, from the Joker's white flesh to the bold red background and the bluish gray of the smoke pouring out of the genie's lamp. Some mild staining and spine wear are barely noticeable against the glowing hues on this classic cover design.

Artists Information
A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
James Noel Mooney was an American comics artist best known for his long tenure at DC Comics and as the signature artist of Supergirl, as well as a Marvel Comics inker and Spider-Man artist, both during what comics historians and fans call the Silver Age of comic books. He sometimes inked under the pseudonym Jay Noel.
