INCREDIBLE HULK #1
CBCS VG: 4.0
Inspired by Jekyll & Hyde and the Jewish myth of the Golem, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby kept their Silver Age hot streak running with the big and brutal Hulk. This classic issue preys on Cold War fears of nuclear annihilation and the average American boy's body discomfort and lack of position in society to create one of the most haunting and affecting of hero origins. Initially colored grey in his premiere appearance, the character was quickly reworked into a big green beast when the primitive four-color printing process mangled the grey color scheme throughout the book, altering the goliath's hue from page to page. The famous cover image still resonates with fans to this day, be it green or grey.
While the initial run didn't sell in numbers considered to keep it viable in the long term, the Hulk kept popping up in anthologies and guest spots. The green behemoth went on to make cameos in the Fantastic Four, join up with the fledgling Avengers, co-star with a variety of other heroes in Tales to Astonish before the title went on to be re-dubbed Incredible Hulk in issue #102, finally returning the wandering, misunderstood Hulk to the pages of his own book for decades to come.
Showing some signs of the passage of time and having been lovingly cherished by a previous owner, this VG copy of Hulk #1 remains an immensely desirable comic book, unquestionably near the top of the value pyramid, this issue sells for impressive numbers even at lower grades. This copy is complete, in original condition, and presents bright yellows and subtle grays. Any Hulk #1 at any grade is a good investment, period.
Overstreet Guide 2018 VG (4.0) value = $9,400.
