Highest GradedThe Harry Anderson illustration on the cover of this book is truly disturbing, there is a palpable sense of terror on the face of the poor soul that is being dragged into that coffin by a grotesque rotting skeleton. These types of horror comics were the bread and butter of Atlas Comics as the publisher tried to stay afloat during the lean years before the Silver Age. Romance, Western, War, and Horror books were all the rage in the 50s as the market for cape books had almost completely dried up after WWII. Eisenhower's America was looking for escapism in other genres as the country settled into the economic boom of the post-war era, and the comic readers of the period sought out more realistic forms of entertainment, particularly, a good scare every now and then. The horror genre would grow into a popular phenomenon that would eventually meet its match in the CCA.
This River City copy is in splendid condition, with none of the chipping typically associated with Atlas books, and a dark background that displays few imperfections. The subtle tones of purple and blue in the skeleton's clothing help make its skull seem paler, while the flesh tones of the victim's face are as bright as the day they were printed. All in all, a pretty neat example of a classic pre-code horror comic, expect this to be a sleeper hit in our upcoming auction.
