E.E. Hibbard cvr/art; 2nd Flash cvrFlash Comics #6 is a classic DC anthology book, the kind which made the Golden Age so much fun, the Wild West era of comics when anything and everything could get published, a young man could walk in off the street with a portfolio of pages and walk out with a new job and a spring in his step. There is something charming about these old-timey comics, with their scattershot concepts and hit or miss talent. Nobody knew for sure what would tickle the public’s fancy, and that was why DC used Flash Comics to test the waters by relying on the one reliable hit in the book, the title hero, Flash, to sell copies while seeing how characters like Hawkman and the Whip fared within the book’s pages. In hindsight, we now know which superheroes had what it took to last for the long haul, and which fell by the wayside. The classic E.E. Hibbard cover employed a bit of the Good Girl Art to draw attention and move some extra copies. This right here is some good old-fashioned Golden Age anthology hijinx.
