1st app. of Shang-Chi the Master of Kung Fu, starring Master "Master of Kung Fu" of Kung Fu; movie forthcoming!
Back in the 1970s Bruce Lee became a nationwide sensation in the USA, sparking a martial arts craze that was one of the main influences on popular culture throughout the glitzy decade. The TV series Kung-Fu, starring David Carradine was a big hit, and Marvel attempted to capitalize on the show’s success by licensing the concept for a line of comics, but the union was not to be as the company that owned Kung-Fu also owned DC comics. So, Marvel instead turned to a holding they had obtained in the world of literature, that of Sax Rohmer’s yellow peril villain Fu-Manchu, using the nefarious ne’er do well as a point of departure, Roy Thomas and Jim Starlin dreamt up a son for Manchu, his name was Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung-Fu. The debut of the character in Special Marvel Edition #15 was an immediate hit, and the title ran for two more issues until it was renamed The Hands of Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung-Fu, after some changing of the guard, the series was turned over to writer Doug Meonch and artists Paul Gulacy, whose staller work on the title built up a loyal following. Gulacy’s combination of cinematic reference and Steranko-styled pop art leanings was a sumptuous feast for the eyes, and fans ate it up. The series would continue to run for #125 issues initially, riding the changing tides of trends throughout the 80s, and the character of Shang-Chi would resurface again and again over time always to great fanfare. Marvel recently announced the production of a Master of Kung-Fu movie, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the first MCU film to star an Asian lead, Simu Liu of “Kim’s Convenience” fame. As with all comics that become MCU films, the first appearance, origin story and key issues always enjoy a rise in value and attention, so grab your copy of this newly crowned key now, you won’t regret it.
