Harvey
VF: 8.0
Lee Elias pencils, inks and signed; image size 11" x 15.5"; comes matted
Black Cat was an early comic book heroine that appeared in the pages of Harvey Comics from the early 40s to the early 50s, guesting in Pocket Comics, Speed Comics, and All-New Comics, Black Cat was rewarded with her own title in 1946. This book went through several permutations, from Black Cat to Black Cat Western Comics to Black Cat Mystery Comics to Mystery Western back to Western and finally settling on Black Cat Mystic, the fiery redhead was subject to the whims of an ever-shifting comic book landscape, even disappearing from her own title at points. This cover to Black Cat Mystery #30 by Lee Elias manages to combine some of the best elements of the title's strange journey into one bizarre piece of art.

Here we have Linda Turner aka Black Cat, backed up to the edge of a cliff by a menagerie of strange creatures, a fish with a human body and tentacles, a giant, angry bird, and what seems to be a praying mantis with a human head are all rapidly closing in on the titular hero, and Lee Elias' superior talents and fertile imagination make it all seem feasible. Fans of Golden Age curiosities are already lining up to bid on this unique piece of comic book history.

Empire Trading Card (1996)
VF: 8.0
Greg and Tim Hildebrandt acrylic on masonite and signed; 11" x 15"; framed 15" x 18.5"; Card #7 of 1996 Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire card set
Created for the 1996 Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire trading card set. This card, which is card #7 of the set, depicts the powerful Xizor getting his hands dirty. At one point this character was known as one of the most influential characters in the Star Wars universe, and that is fully expressed in this painting by the Brothers Hildebrandt. Notice the deep, dark shadows the emphasize the evil of this character and his intentions, the expressive figure that is trapped in Xizor's grasp, and the always gorgeous color and lighting. Even dark subject matter can be painted beautifully when created by the Brothers Hildebrandt. - Signed by Greg and Tim Hildebrandt

one of the most iconic covers of the Golden Age! 1st app. Joker; 1st app. Catwoman (Spring 1940)
Bob Kane and Batman co-creator Bill Finger wiped the grime off Gotham and added a bright, youthful cohort to the Batman mythos. One of the most famous comics of the Golden Age, featuring one of the most iconic covers, Batman #1 is the perfect cornerstone for any new GA collector; an accessible comic that only increases in value and popularity year after year. Featuring not only the first appearance of the infamous and remarkably influential Catwoman but also of the immortal Joker, Batman #1 is consistently among the top-ten-most-desirable comics in the world, always demanding impressive prices and always a super-hot item in our auctions. As knowledgeable collectors are aware, top-tier keys are becoming more and more difficult to find on the market, as owners know well enough to hold on to these trophies and lock them away for years or sometimes generations.

Batman's extensive and popular media universe keeps him at the forefront of the modern discourse of superheroes. Early Batman issues are increasingly rare in all grades but this 2.0 copy has a surprising amount of aesthetic appeal. The colors are robust as the Dynamic Duo avoids the majority of the erosion on this cover and swings into the hearts of fans worldwide.

Overstreet Guide 2018 GD (2.0) value = $50,000

2nd app. Joker, 2nd app. Catwoman; classic Joker splash page
By the second issue of Batman the transformation of the character and franchise from dark, brooding, mystery of the night to cheerful (if bizarre) puncher of bad persons was complete. Even the backgrounds of these covers mark a decisive change from the pre-Robin era: from dense, detailed settings full of menace to bright, eye-catching color washes meant to pry coins from the pockets of precocious boys. Despite the flattening of the character's idiosyncrasies, there was also no denying the inventiveness and joy of these classic-era tales, with Kane's ghost artists -fine craftsmen all- filling pages and pages with deliriously imaginative locales, perfectly craggy thug faces, and no end of action and mayhem.

This VG copy of Batman #2 has a bright red background, which highlights the juvenile prank taking place in the center of the cover, as luck would have it, Batman, Robin, and their victim have avoided any of the nicks and dings on this iconic cover. The Dynamic Duo's colors are well-defined, as is the detailed pattern on the gangster's suit, a nifty copy of a hard-to-find GA classic.

Bob Kane/Jerry Robinson cvr/art; 3rd app of Catwoman (1st in costume)
Early Batman comics are notoriously difficult to procure and issue #3 has one of the best covers of the first ten issues of the run. This one looks like it may have been the basis for the animated intro of the iconic Adam West TV series. You can almost hear the theme song as you look at it! It just so happens to contain the first appearance of Catwoman in full costume and the first appearance of the Puppet Master as well.

Comic covers don't come much more iconic than this one, Batman's grey and blue color scheme is deep and clean, and the bright hues of Boy Wonder's outfit stand out in perfect balance to his partner's darker design. Imperfections are located at the edges or corners of the cover leaving the Caped Crusaders mostly unaffected by the passage of time.

classic Fred Ray Joker cover; Penguin app.
Joker covers always bring a premium at auction and this cover is a perfect example why. With Batman as the King, Robin as the Jack, and the Joker as, who else, the Joker, Fred Ray's fabulous design was an instant classic. As was the style of the day, someone usually got punched in the jaw and nothing's better than Joker getting a good socking from Batman! The Penguin makes a fowl appearance as well. Art by creator Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson.

While this cover does have shadowing around the top and right side, the central image has been left relatively free of wear, Batman, Robin, and the Joker are all clean and clear, with pigments that have remained loud and proud. The purples of the Joker's vestments are palpable, while the Dynamic Duo is brought to the fore by their respective red and blue backgrounds. A handsome and solid VG+ copy of a beloved Batman issue.

Joker app.; WWII paratrooper cover; Jerry Siegel & Joe DiMaggio cameos
This book's cover illustration, by co-creator Bob Kane, bears a classic WWII image of the Dynamic Duo parachuting into action, no doubt to do their patriotic duty for the boys overseas. The interior of the book contains three thrilling tales: "The Batman Plays a Lone Hand", in which Batman, surprisingly, fires Robin in order to go solo; "Comedy of Tears", a Joker story which includes "real world" cameos by Joe DiMaggio and Superman creator Jerry Seigel; and "The Story of the Seventeen Stones", which pits the Bat against Rocky Grimes, who does indeed employ seventeen forms of stone in the executions of his crimes.
