Adam Hughes pencils and inks; image size 13.5" x 22"
Holy Original Bat Art! When DC editor Julius "Julie" Schwartz passed away in 2004, the renowned publishing house decided to put out a collection of eight one-shot comics to memorialize the beloved progenitor of the Silver Age. This is the beautifully illustrated cover of one of these popular issues, rendered with great skill by artist Adam Hughes, on a scale much larger than typical cover art, the book features satires of two Schwartz-commissioned Batman stories from the 50s and 60s, which pay tribute to Julie and his particular sense of humor. Legend has it, Schwartz was known for ordering stories based on cover art, and directing writers to craft tales to fit the proposed concepts, flipping the usual industry conventions on their head.

This is a special piece that honors a legendary figure in the comic world, while simultaneously paying homage to the classic Batman #183 cover by Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella.

DC
VF: 8.0
Pg. 4; Carmine Infantino pencils, Joe Giella inks; image size 10" x 15.25"
Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella collaborated on "Batman of Two Worlds" from DC Comics Presents: Batman #1, the comic was one of eight one-offs published in tribute to beloved DC Editor Julius "Julie" Schwartz after his passing in 2004. The plot involves the Dynamic Duo investigating a murder involving two actors that portray Batman and Robin on television, which turns out to be a hoax perpetrated by the dastardly Clayface to lure the superheroes into his clutches. The throwback style employed is a sly inside joke by Infantino and Giella who originally illustrated the cover to Batman #183, which was the inspiration for this book's cover. The two industry veterans do a bang up job showcasing the tried-and-true skills that they honed over the decades to pay homage to their friend in this interesting page from a special comic in the DC catalog.

DC
VF: 8.0
Pg. 4; Bob Kane pencils, Charles Paris inks; image size 12.75" x 18"
"The Black Cat Crimes!" Much like Batman had his Batmobile, Catwoman had her Kitty Car, and this page, drawn by Bob Kane, puts that villainous vehicle on full display. The story "The Black Cat Crimes" involves Catwoman's scheme to invoke the old superstition about black cats crossing one's path to extort money from a group of wealthy Gothamites. The plot ends up with the Dynamic Duo chasing her through the city, allowing these sleek super speedsters to dominate the action in these panels.

Golden Age pages are scarce in general and early Detective pages are particularly difficult to come by, as anything related to the Caped Crusader is regularly snapped up by his rabid fan base and kept in personal collections for years. Finding such a dynamic page, with classic illustrations by Batman's co-creator, featuring one of the most popular villains of the DC stable is no small feat, and we expect our customers will respond with feverish bidding at auction.

Unknown Artist pencils, inks attributed to Mike Esposito and John Romita; stat from Tomb of Dracula #61 affixed to art; image size 10" x 15"
"Full Moon Rise -- Werewolf Kill!"
There is a bit of mystery surrounding this cover, as the penciler's identity is yet to be identified, what is obvious however, is the quality of this piece. Created for the UK comic Dracula Lives, which featured many of the same stories from the US title Tomb of Dracula, but had cover art created solely for the British market. The cover has a stat from Tomb of Dracula #61 affixed to it, which gives the piece a finished look. The experts at ComicConnect have attributed the inks to Mike Esposito and John Romita, perhaps the name of the penciler who created this 70's horror cover will become known in time, and the owner may be pleasantly surprised to find its value going up. Regardless of who the artist is, this is still a great Bronze Age Dracula cover, and a cool piece of Marvel horror history.

1st app. & origin Daredevil by Everett; Kirby cover (4/64)
You can tell from the Spider-Man plug on the cover that Marvel had, by the time of this book's release, become known as a hero machine by pumping out high-gloss, high-energy heroes and heroines, which sold like hotcakes. In this case, the House of Ideas picked up a Biro hero name, which had been left to linger, dusted it off and added the enticing gimmick of making their Daredevil a blind lawyer, adding both modern intrigue and a great hook. It would take a while for the character to fully hit its stride, but the dynamic Kirby cover and ravishing Everett interiors attracted readers and established Daredevil as a unique and mature alternative to cosmic adventuring and teenage angst.

Kirby cvr; Fantastic Four app.; 2nd app. Electro
Stan Lee is a creator who always hedges his bets when rolling out new characters, as he weaves the Fantastic Four into Daredevil #2 to increase sales and interest in the start-up super-hero. "The Man" deftly applied the same trick a year earlier in the classic, Amazing Spider-Man #1. The strategy works for the story and for Marvel's bottom line, as this is one heck of a jam-packed action fest, and the addition of Spidey nemesis Electro only serves to shore up the overall appeal of this book even further. The cover art by Jack Kirby does a spectacular job of encapsulating the action within, a tale that involves Matt Murdock's attempt to help the FF renew the lease on the Baxter Building, which is interrupted by the electric villain's evil machinations. Did we happen to mention, that the Netflix Daredevil series is a red-hot success?

classic Wood Sub-Mariner underwater battle cover
Pennsylvania Dutch Copy
Before Frank Miller's run in the 1980s and the current hit Netflix series made Daredevil the popular character he is today, many a great artist took a swing at illustrating ol' horn head. But, few had the impact of the late, great Wally Wood. His short run on Daredevil is thought to be some of his best work and is certainly some of the best work in the history of the title. Fans of both Wood and Daredevil know that if you want to own the very best, issue #7 is the one you need to get. It's the first time the character dons his trademark all-red costume (and why in the world it would ever be a different color is beyond me!) as he battles Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner!
At NM, this copy is beautiful with white/off-white pages and colors that just pop off the page!

Overstreet Guide 2018 NM- (9.2) value = $2,600.

1st Fin (who looks just like Sub-Mariner) by Bill Everett; 1st Captain Daring by Simon & Kirby (4/41)
Why in the world did Timely publish a character so similar to Sub-Mariner? And by the same artist who created Sub-Mariner? What was needed was a Subbie/Fin battle issue drawn by Everett. That would have been interesting.
