Gil Kane pencils, Dick Giordano inks, John Romita alterations; image size 10" x 14.5"
Iron Fist
Fans of Iron Fist take heed. The cover from Marvel Premiere #17 presents the martial arts superhero in all of his muscular glory. Just two issues after his first appearance, the inimitable Danny Rand shows why he was such a popular character when he burst onto the scene. Cashing in on the 1970's fervor for all things chop-socky, his combination of Kung-Fu action and supercharged heroics quickly won over readers who would soon be rewarded with an Iron Fist series, then the character would go on to team up with Power Man, Luke Cage, for a successful run in the 1980s.

Gil Kane's kinetic style was a perfect fit for the newly minted hero, as Iron Fist explodes onto this cover in dramatic fashion. The sense of danger is heightened by the two pistols in the foreground, framing the nascent hero as he smashes his way through a group of lackeys, no doubt on his way to confront a bigger and badder villain within the comic's pages. The lukewarm reception of Iron Fist's Netflix series has done nothing to curtail Danny Rand's popularity among Bronze Age comic book fans. When you take his loyal fanbase into account, along with the always-popular Kane's artistic flourishes, this is one butt-kicking cover piece that would make a wonderful addition to a collector's portfolio.

"Peggy Dean and Mature Ham"

Meet Merton was a humor title with the obvious intent of cashing in on the Archie market, the hapless teenager and his two feamle friends, one blonde, one brunette, well, you get the picture...But this nifty little story in the back pages of issue #2 of Merton, "Peggy Dean and Mature Ham" is a diamond in the rough, it tells the tale of a Tarzan-esque he-man and his on screen exploits, which involve wrestling with an assortment of wild animals, who turns out to be not so macho after all. This story winks at the behind-the-scenes lives of Hollywood actors, and does it with great gusto, although the artist here is uncredited, it is obvious a seasoned talent was responsible for this nifty piece of mid-fifties satire that would not seem out of place in Mad Magazine.

The Quick and the Dead!
Scott Free, aka Mister Miracle, was the main character in one of a trilogy of titles that comprised Kirby's Fourth World, along with New Gods and Forever People. Mister Miracle was the title that hewed closest to the existing superhero genre that readers were accustomed to. Free was an unwitting pawn in the machinations of the New Gods, exchanged as a baby with Darkseid's son Orion to ensure the end of a war between New Genesis and Apokolips. He grew up in Granny Goodness' Terror Orphanage and eventually escaped to Earth where he encountered his mentor Thaddeus Brown, the original Mister Miracle, who was murdered and replaced by Free. His escape broke the hostage pact and allowed Darkseid to once again attack New Genesis, as Miracle wandered the world getting into adventures as a circus performer and escape artist.
