Hal Forrest pencils, inks and signed; 03/16/30; image size 22" x 28.25"
Tailspin Tommy was the first comic strip to cash in on America's obsession with aviation in the early part of the 20th century, thanks in no small part to the fervor surrounding Charles Lindbergh, many other heroic flyers would follow in the funny pages and comic books but Tailspin Tommy was the first, and many consider the best, of the airborne heroes to make a mark on comic readers.

This entry in the series shows Tommy meeting one of his idols, Inspector McDowall of the RCMP who hires the pilot to ferry him to his ranch in the Canadian wilderness. The lush, flowing penmanship of Hal Forrest is on display on this engaging strip, which is a large piece of art, that has been hand painted with brilliant watercolors and was signed by Forrest.

Hal Forrest pencils, inks and signed; colored by unknown artist; 1/22/1932; image size 22" x 29"

In this episode of Tailspin Tommy, the titular hero and his pal Skeets have to climb out on the exterior of a dirigible to repair a fin that was damaged by a scrape with a mountain during a bout of inclement weather. The attempted daredevil mending job takes a bad turn as Skeets tumbles off the airship and hangs by a safety rope. Forrest was equally deft at handling action scenes as he was with conversational plot-driven fare, and his work on this page is exceptional. The piece is large format and has been hand colored by an unknown artist.

In this action-packed sequence, Tommy and Skeeter do battle with an enraged polar bear after they made an emergency landing on an ice floe. Hal Forrest was a versatile artist, able to portray hard-boiled action and romantic plots with the same amount of gravitas, and this page is filled to the brim with some serious survival exploits as the two aviators are pitched in a life or death battle with the humongous carnivore. The page is hand painted by an unknown artist and signed by Hal Forrest.

Pg. 29, Jack Kirby pencils, Joe Sinnott inks; 14" x 21"
After facing down M.O.D.O.K. Cap and Agent-13 beat a hasty retreat from A.I.M. headquarters, only to be harassed and slowed down by a couple of "beekeepers." Agent-13 delivers a hard "FZAT" to one of the baddies, then Cap uses a well-placed shield toss to stymie the remaining A.I.M. team members and prevent their escape. Jack Kirby places the reader squarely in the middle of the action as this page moves at a rapid pace. One can almost feel the race against time our protagonists are subjected to, as, once again, Kirby proves why he is called the King and will retain that title for all time.

Russ Manning pencils, inks and signed; image size 12" x 17"; A Monster Man holds Tarzan in the air as he brandishes his knife
Titled "Tarzan and the Monster Men" this cover illustration by Russ Manning is an impressive stand-alone piece of comic art, the action up front shows the King of the Jungle being thrown around like a rag doll by a misshapen humanoid, while he brandishes his knife in an attempt to defend himself. The background is a mixture of flames and sci-fi contraptions, which completes the pulpy atmosphere on this piece, which is probably unpublished art by Manning. "The Monster Men" is the title of an Edgar Rice Burroughs book, but research has revealed no information on the existence of a comic book version from the period this piece was created, making it an even more desirable collectible.

This page from Thor #154 has the Thunder God speeding off to check up on his beau, Sif, as she is convalescing in a hospital bed after surviving a battle between Thor and his brother, Loki. The story depicted in these panels shows the softer side of Jack Kirby, who was equally adept in his handling of cosmic battles and quiet moments such as this one. Vince Colletta's deft inks add to the gravity of this emotional page. Jack Kirby pencils, Vince Colletta inks, signed by Stan Lee; image size 10" x 15.5"
RAGNAROK! "We know each other. He's a friend from work"
Ragnarok, according to Norse Mythology, is basically the end times, akin to Revelations in the bible. It involves the deaths of many of the gods above, while natural disasters wipe out the Earth below leading to rebirth once the devastation has concluded. The cover of Thor #157 takes on the remarkable mission of portraying the mayhem of an apocalyptic event, here rendered by none other than the "King" himself, Jack Kirby. The epic themes of the Thor series gave Kirby the freedom to go above and beyond the scope of many of his other Silver Age creations, employing more grandiose flourishes, the title allowed Kirby to grow as an illustrator and sharpen his abilities far beyond those of mere mortals.

The action on this cover shows Thor being crushed in the gigantic claw of Mangog, a creature that draws his power from hatred, chaos, and destruction, and, as is evident on this cover, there is plenty of fuel on which the demonic monster can feed. Many of Kirby's Thor covers tend to keep the God of Thunder off the center of the page and away from the majority of the action. Nobody really knows why the artist would shy away from making the main character dominant on his own covers, but this issue is an important exception. Thor is featured in full, right dab smack in the middle of this magnificent piece of art.

Jack Kirby art is always a solid investment and a huge point of interest in our auctions. When you add in the connection between this cover and the blockbuster film "Thor: Ragnarok" this piece will surely draw plenty of attention before the hammer drops, and we are not talking about Mjolnir here folks.

21pgs of 22 pg color guide for 'Beyond Reason's Edge" from Thor V2 #23; signed by Gregory Wright; certification letter and comic included
John Romita Jr.'s run on Thor includes some of the most memorable Thor stories in recently memory, and this one is from the highly regarded story arc featuring Thanos and Mangog. This near complete issue (missing page 8) features Gregory Wright's coloring as Thor and Firelord try to catch up to Thanos and Mangog, who are storming across the galaxy terrorizing planets. This issue includes the first appearance of the Millenium Monarch planet as well as the Guardian of the Millenium Monarch, as well as appearances by Rigellian Recorder, Orikal, and Odin himself! Of course, Thanos and Mangog are in there too. Face front, True Believers!

Prior to the digital era, color guides were used to inform the printer on how to accurately print the colors of the comic book. These are ONE OF A KIND pieces of the production process of each comic book. Although they vary in size, most color guides were normal note-book paper sized photocopies of the comic book's original art, that were provided to the staff colorist, who would hand-color, water-color, or paint the color guides. The work was pain-staking and required a high level of attention to detail, as well as consistency! Often times a coding system of numbers and/or letters was used to indicate specific colors, shades, and information that was vital to ensuring the printer accurately printed the comic's coloration. These are sometimes drawn right onto the color guides themselves, and in some instances the colorists would mark them up on an acetate or rice paper overlay. Color guides are a unique, one-of-a-kind collectible aspect of the production of a comic book, and as such they have historic value, because they provide insight into the studio and artist's vision of how the comic book should appear in print. Often times the color guide colors are more vibrant and richer than the actual printed comic book, since colors often degraded when printed onto the cheap newsprint paper that comics were traditionally printed on. In addition, some of the nuances of shading and color gradation were sometimes more complex than the print house was able to recreate (or cared to take the time and effort to recreate) and so the color guides often have a truer sense of what the comic should look like, than the actual comic book itself.

In today's digital age, color guides are no longer used, and therefore, vintage color guides are garnering more interest from collectors who are looking for a unique piece of a particular comic book's history and production process to own.

White Mountain Copy
Highest Graded
Tales from the Crypt was one of the hallmark titles put out by scandalous horror comics house EC that was responsible in no small part for the initiation of the Comics Code Authority and Congressional hearings about the damage comic books were doing to young, impressionable minds. It is evident from this Wally Wood illustration that there may have been something to this theory, as the gruesome and oftentimes violent imagery depicted on these covers still deliver a shock today. This guillotine cover is a classic of the series, which specialized in jolting readers with disturbing images that kept them rushing to newsstands to get their cheap thrills in the otherwise milquetoast 1950s

Graded at the very top of the census, this NM+ copy comes from the White Mountain pedigree, this book is spotless, with glowing hues, solid and sharp corners and tight binding that make this a real treasure. Fans of EC comics will gaze in wonder at the immaculate preservation of this gem, and some lucky horror hound will soon be the happy owner of this pristine classic.

Kirby cvr; Ditko art; origin & 1st app. Iron Man (Tony Stark) (3/63)
Realizing the growing Marvel audience was composed primarily of hip, and largely left-leaning high-school students and collegians, Stan Lee challenged himself to create a hero who would be the embodiment of everything the counterculture was railing against, and still elicit sympathy from readers. Thus, Tony Stark was born as an older, hard-drinking, playboy millionaire. Iron Man quickly became a cult favorite whose popularity has only grown over the years.

The origin story of Iron Man is one deeply rooted in the Vietnam War era. Tony Stark, a weapons designer, is brought in to help the U.S. government in their efforts to combat the Vietcong, whose guerilla tactics make the American military approach of bigger and badder seem obsolete in the steamy jungles of Southeast Asia. While conducting a test, Stark is mortally wounded by a booby trap and taken captive. While imprisoned, Stark constructs a suit of armor that contains an array of gadgets and firepower that also slows the approach of a piece of shrapnel inching inexorably towards his heart. Voila, Iron Man is born ready to do battle with the forces of Communism and other evils around the globe.

This VF/NM copy is nearly spotless, the muted colors retain their original sheen, and the binding is solid with sharp corners.

Kirby, Ditko art; 2nd Iron Man; 1st Gold Armor
As with the Hulk, the first appearance of Iron Man proved a hit with readers but a pain for the production department, as the characters' initial grey armor design proved tough to pick out in the dizzying interior art squeezed into his short but memorable debut. Back to the drawing board, and the simple solution of recoloring his armor into a dazzling expanse of shimmering gold. The look still wasn't complete, and fans of the modern Iron Man will still be puzzled by his utilitarian design, but it was a step closer to perfection, and boy did it pop on the cover. Note, also, that Marvel still wasn't above hedging its bets, laying out this cover to somewhat resemble the monster mash imagery that were its bread and butter before the shift to hero books, especially the cavedude on the right, who looks like he could have wandered in from one of the pre-hero horror covers by accident.
