Kirby cvr; Ditko art; origin & 1st app. Iron Man (Tony Stark) (3/63)
Realizing the growing Marvel audience was composed primarily of hip, and largely left-leaning high-school students and collegians, Stan Lee decided to challenge himself to create a hero who would be the embodiment of everything the counterculture was railing against, and still elicit sympathy from readers. Thus, Tony Stark was born, an older, hard drinking, playboy millionaire. Iron Man quickly became a cult favorite whose popularity has only grown over the years.

The origin story of Iron Man is one deeply rooted in the Vietnam War era, Tony Stark, a weapons designer, is brought in to help the U.S. government in their efforts to combat the Vietcong, whose guerilla tactics make the American military approach of bigger and badder seem obsolete in the steamy jungles of Southeast Asia. While conducting a test, Stark is fatally injured by a booby trap, and during his captivity he constructs a suit of armor that slows the approach of a piece of shrapnel towards his heart, and contains an array of gadgets and firepower. Voila, Iron Man is born, and he is ready to do battle with the forces of Communism and other evils around the globe.

Kirby, Ditko art; 2nd Iron Man; 1st Gold Armor
As with the Hulk, the first appearance of Iron Man proved a hit with readers but a pain for the production department, as the characters' initial grey armor design proved tough to pick out in the dizzying interior art squeezed into his short but memorable debut. Back to the drawing board, and the simple solution of recoloring his armor into a dazzling expanse of shimmering gold. The look still wasn't complete, and fans of the modern Iron Man will still be puzzled by his utilitarian design, but it was a step closer to perfection, and boy did it pop on the cover. Note, also, that Marvel still wasn't above hedging its bets, laying out this cover to somewhat resemble the monster mash imagery that were its bread and butter before the shift to hero books, especially the cavedude on the right, who looks like he could have wandered in from one of the pre-hero horror covers by accident.

Kirby cvr, Ditko art; Stone Men prototype
Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko are the two artist most-closely associated with the halcyon days of Marvel s rise to prominence, before Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four, the duo toiled in the bullpen on a slew of science-fiction, western and suspense titles for Editor-in-Chief Stan Lee in an effort to keep the struggling publishing house afloat. Tales to Astonish was one of the titles that the influential artists contributed to regularly, displaying their individual styles and undeniable talents that would soon become the stuff of legend. TTA 6 bears a typically stunning Atomic Age Kirby cover highlighting the classic Ditko monster tale within the book.

Kirby/Ditko cvr; 1st app. Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy
In the Dutch and Afrikaans language the word "groot" means "large", and the character bearing that name has recently also shared the distinction of becoming large, via the blockbuster film "Guardians of the Galaxy". Life for Groot began in the pages of Tales to Astonish, an imprint that underwent many permutations. Initially envisioned as a bad guy, in this first Groot tale, the "Monarch of Planet X" lands on Earth and quickly begins to absorb wooden objects which cause him to grow in stature, it seems he has designs to take an entire town back to his home world to perform scientific tests, fortunately, he is thwarted by a genetically-modified colony of termites.

Re-imagined in 2006 as a noble, heroic figure, Groot went on to join the second version of the GOTG team along with Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Adam Warlock, Gamora, Quasar and Drax the Destroyer, and soon, would enter the ranks of Marvel's recent box-office bonanza.

The White Savages of Vari; back cover pin-up
First made familiar to comics audiences on the Sunday pages via the pen of the revered Hal Foster, Tarzan was Edgar Rice Burroughs' most enduring and popular creation, a feral man-child raised by primates whose manly exploits and vigorous adventures charmed and excited readers young and old through nearly a century of pop culture and media. While movies, TV, and other forms featured the jungle hero, it was in comics that he had his longest unbroken streak of popularity, encompassing three of the major comics publishers, and illustrated by many of comics' giants, including Joe Kubert, Russ Manning, and John Buscema, and still running to this day via Dark Horse and Dynamite. This first issue of the characters' unprecedented 70+ year run is a favorite internationally, as the franchise's fame and demand proved as durable in Europe as in the States (in fact, even more so), and is both a kitsch favorite and a landmark key.
