Page 39; Barry Windsor-Smith, Terry Austin inks; image size approximately 10"x15"
From the special double-sized issue, LifeDeath: A Love Story, we have a beautifully rendered interior page featuring a spat between Storm and Forge. With Storm believing she has lost all her powers at the hand of the evil, mutant-hating Henry Gyrich, she awakes to find herself in the care of Forge, but before their romance can even begin, she learns that the Neutralizer that Gyrich used on her was forged by none other than, ulp! Forge! Cue loud organ swell! Often a comic artist's work will project a cinematic quality. Barry Windsor-Smith's talent in layouts and stylings are above extra, the reader can practically hear the rain falling as Storm socks the doting Forge for a loop. Powerful imagery, characteristic of Barry's incredible abilities, draws the reader into the story. His sporadic, but well-received, work with the title throughout the 80s is sure to be held in high praise by the winning bidder of this lot.

1st New X-Men; 1st Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Thunderbird; Cockrum art (Summer 1975)
In the pantheon of modern superheroes, the X-Men have made their mark. 2000's X-Men was the first, and arguably one of the best, of what was to become a long line of blockbusters for Marvel. With that film and all of its sequels, the Uncanny X-Men have become a household name as Wolverine has cemented himself as one of the most popular heroes of all time. A revamping in 1975 by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum of the book's original lineup from the mid-60s, Giant Size X-Men 1 was the very first appearance of many of the characters we now associate with the movie franchise. Replacing most of the original characters while creating a multi-national team of superheroes, this issue renewed interest in the lagging title that continued through with X-Men 94 shortly after and spawned numerous X-titles all through the 80s, 90s, and the 2000s. To this day, the mutant team and all of their spin-offs continue to be amongst Marvel's best-selling books.

X-Men: Apocalypse, the latest entry into the massively successful film franchise based on the characters who first appeared in this book, is sure to drive the value of this Bronze Age classic to the next level.

Kirby cvr/art; origin and 1st app. X-Men; 1st app. Magneto
As Stan Lee explained on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, his original title for this comic was "The Mutants" but the editor in chief at the time didn't like the sound of it. Stan, in a stroke of genius, decided to name the team after its founder Professor X, and thus was born the X-Men. A band of outcasts hated and feared by the human world this team book was almost canceled. It was reborn with a cast of new characters in the 70s which made them a household name and a perennial favorite ever since. Everybody can relate to what it is like being on the outside looking in at one point or another in their lives and that is what draws us to the X-Men. With a myriad number of comic-related titles, over five movies made and many more to come the popularity of this title will only increase over time.
X-Men #1 is always a solid investment, especially in high grade like this spectacular copy. In this condition, first time investment buyers can test the waters of the higher-end market of comic book collecting without breaking the bank.

Racial strife dominated the headlines of 1963 America. A savvy storyteller keeps a finger on the pulse of history and Stan Lee was just that. Through the debut of the X-Men, Lee was able to subtly address racism through a team of super-heroes like no other. With strange appearances and unique abilities, normal folks could relate to the mutants as they found themselves in situations that mirrored those of humanity. Stan wanted kids to connect with the characters so they could feel less alone, outcast, or even unattractive, and move a few comic magazines in the meantime. The Uncanny X-Men were ideal for the social upheaval that informed the 60s, and there's no sign of the X-Men's popularity dwindling into the modern day. Don't miss your chance to own a true piece of Marvel history!

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. The Vanisher
Still trying to find the feel and style of the series, in this issue, Lee and Kirby introduce a traditional villain, The Vanisher, meant to plague our teenaged heroes by teleporting and transporting himself with his mutant powers, eventually developing a scheme whereby he holds national secrets hostage, demanding millions of dollars from the US government in an exciting standoff on the lawn of the White House. The use of the mutant hero/villain motif eventually became the backbone of much of the Marvel line, but this charming and telling early issue shows the foundations still being laid for hero greatness to come.
