1st Superman by Siegel and Shuster
Highest Graded
The most important comic book in history, this book stands as the introduction of the archetype for all other heroes to come as Superman transcends comics and pop culture as an icon of truth, justice, and the American way! Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman is quite possibly the most recognizable fictional character in the world. The brainchild of two struggling sci-fi fans from the Rust Belt, the Man of Steel became an instant icon to Depression-era readers and transformed into a symbol of American spirit and spunk during the brutal days of WWII. Since then, he has endured as both a beloved character and an embodiment of hope and vigor, making this first appearance not just a piece of comics' history, but American history as well.

If you are a new customer planning to make a first-time purchase over $25,000, please contact us 24 hours in advance of the item closing at 212.895.3999 or support@comicconnect.com so that we may approve your account for bidding. 4th Superman cvr, classic Joe Shuster train cvr; cf is ad for Superman #1
Highest Graded
Note the centerfold ad: barely a year after his debut, the Man of Steel had become such an undeniable sensation that National has decided to capitalize on his fame by giving him his own solo title. Not that they're pulling him from Action Comics, mind you -- in fact, they're putting him on the cover of the comic with increasing frequency, no longer relying on repurposed covers from their other anthology titles and tried-and-true pulp-style covers. Superman is clearly here to stay, and it is announced with this legendary Shuster cover, a fine example of the strong, solidly built imagery that typified these early, more muscular adventures of the incredibly popular hero. Not only notable for the announcement of the character's upcoming solo series, this issue also boasts the debut of Superman's first real arch-nemesis, the Ultra-Humanite. Clearly inspired by villains from Saturday serials and Republic B-thrillers, this wheelchair-bound mad genius proves a cunning rival for our super-protagonist, in a debut appearance so thickly plotted and full of constant cliffhangers it practically bursts at the seams (and may have been a repurposed set of daily strips, as with the first few Action Superman appearances). A truly historic issue no matter which way you slice it, and, as with so many of these early Action issues, extremely rare.

Superman without S on chest cvr
The iconic image of Superman tearing a bank vault's door off was showcased here and later immortalized by Henry Cavill in the movie Man of Steel. It is not difficult to see why this issue has become one of the most sought after of the early Action Comics. The image of Superman performing a feat of otherworldly strength in front of a group of amazed bystanders is very reminiscent of the cover of Action Comics #1. Simon and Shuster's character touched something at the very core of Americans who were seeking a hero to help lift them out of the grim reality of the Great Depression. In what is a rarity for any Golden Age Superman cover, Big Blue's "S" symbol is not emblazoned upon his chest.
This book could be un-restored. Signed by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel!

Joe Shuster cvr/art; 1st app. of Lex Luthor; 1st mention of Daily Planet
Just as Sherlock had Moriarty, so does Superman have his Alexei "Lex" Luthor, the template for all super-nemeses to follow, and arguably one of the best-known literary creations of the 20th Century in his own right. Initially a standard evil-genius-with-a-death-ray stereotype, developed by Siegel and Shuster for one of the anti-war potboilers for which the series was first known, he quickly gained a popularity and style all his own, and flourished into one of the all-time great comic baddies. The first appearance of the character is among the rarest of Golden Age keys.

Baily art; classic early German WWII cover (4/41)
The post-Pearl Harbor environment of wartime patriotism and bravado in the face of danger seems ever more stark when compared to the sharply bifurcated attitudes toward war and warriors in the late 1930s through early 1941. Where publishers and artists would churn out endless tales of Axis-punching derring-do once America's involvement in the all-encompassing conflict was assured, much of the storytelling leading up to the war was more ambivalent, or downright hostile to the powers that be. Unsurprising from a generation raised on the aftermath of the Great War and the crushing poverty of the Depression, it's still startling today. Even on cover imagery such as this, the mood is less one of jocular rabble rousing and more the melancholy, disgusted anger of scarred youth fighting the inevitable. Much of Siegel and Shuster's pre-WWII Superman material trods this fine line, and this arresting cover stands in mute contrast to the barrel-chested nature of Fred Ray's later iconic Super-imagery. Collectors treasure these early Superman covers, and with good reason, as the war effort would also later consume many of these popular comics in periodic paper drives, or care packages overseas to distraction-starved troops.
