1st Captain America since Golden Age (spoiler: it's the Acrobat in disguise); 3rd Dr. Strange
Second City Collection
In a clever bait-and-switch tactic used to gauge interest in the return of World War II's personification of American might, Stan Lee called on Jack Kirby to cagily revive Captain America, without actually committing to the return of the hero, in case audiences rejected the potentially lucrative character. Placing the modern Torch's nemesis the Acrobat into the familiar red-white-and-blue costume, Lee and Kirby could have their cake and eat it too, teasing Golden Age fans with a cover image that could have been used for a late-period Marvel Mystery issue, while still providing younger readers their young new hero and a twist that assured them that maybe the old guard wouldn't have to come back after all. Lee needn't have worried -- readers went nuts for the fake Cap, making the return of the real Cap virtually assured, and paving the way for the legendary Avengers #4. Also of note is the idea that Captain America would be reduced to making appearances at car shows -- shades of the "celebrity zoos" that now anchor nearly every comic convention!

Kirby/Ditko cvr; origin Dr. Strange; 2nd app. Sandman, early Spiderman x-over
Second City Collection
Strange Tales #115 features a typically striking Steve Ditko cover illustration, which neatly summarizes the Human Torch v. Sandman story that is the first featured in the issue, a story that boasts a cameo by Spider-Man, as well as a Torch as Spidey plot twist. But the real treasure of this book may be the Dr. Strange origin tucked in in the back pages, although the Sorcerer Supreme had appeared in the previous four issues of Strange Tales, this is the origin story of the immortal creation, providing the direct inspiration for the upcoming Dr. Strange feature film starring Benedict Cumberbatch. As it about to become a major part of the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe lore, there can be no mistaking the value and importance of this classic Silver Age comic.

Kirby cvr; Ditko art; origin & 1st app. Iron Man (Tony Stark) (3/63)
Second City Collection
Realizing the growing Marvel audience was composed primarily of hip, and largely left-leaning high-school students and collegians, Stan Lee decided to challenge himself to create a hero who would be the embodiment of everything the counterculture was railing against, and still elicit sympathy from readers. Thus, Tony Stark was born, an older, hard drinking, playboy millionaire. Iron Man quickly became a cult favorite whose popularity has only grown over the years.

The origin story of Iron Man is one deeply rooted in the Vietnam War era, Tony Stark, a weapons designer, is brought in to help the U.S. government in their efforts to combat the Vietcong, whose guerilla tactics make the American military approach of bigger and badder seem obsolete in the steamy jungles of Southeast Asia. While conducting a test, Stark is fatally injured by a booby trap, and during his captivity he constructs a suit of armor that slows the approach of a piece of shrapnel towards his heart, and contains an array of gadgets and firepower. Voila, Iron Man is born, and he is ready to do battle with the forces of Communism and other evils around the globe.
