In New York Edition REPRINT; white pgs
first Spider-Man crossover
Second City Collection
Stan Lee revived and redefined the concept of the team-up book in earlier issues of the Avengers, here Lee keeps the fire lit under his new title by putting a fan favorite, Spider-Man, prominently featured on the cover. Already a megastar by this point, Spidey never failed to bring flocks of dedicated readers along when appearing in other titles, and this was no exception. Jack Kirby drafted one of his few images of the teenage wallcrawler on this rare treat of a cover. Older readers may have been appalled to see their friendly neighborhood Spider-Man get top billing over Captain America, but, hey, it was the 60s and the times, they were a-changin'.

In the time period after the creation of the Comics Code Authority publishers had to obey a set of rules, which had basically defanged the industy. EC and other exploitation imprints were hobbled and the entire comic book business seemed on the brink of extinction. It was at this point that struggling companies like Atlas decided to slyly maneuver around the restrictions of the CCA and put out a glut of somewhat tame horror-themed comics in hopes of capturing the audience who suddenly had nowhere to turn for their cheap thrills. The artists that labored away on these shockers were unwittingly molding the style that would graduate to fruition once the super-hero craze reignited in the Silver Age. Mystery Tales #1 was ground zero for this interesting era, with submissions from Paul Maneely, Gene Colan, and Paul Reinman, this is a solid post-code horror comic classic.

Ogden Whitney, who submitted "The Crawling Horror" story to this issue of Mystery Tales was best known for his creation, Herbie Popnecker, a rotund super-hero spoof that went on to become a popular cult character. It was these unsung heroes that toiled away in relative obscurity during these low days of the comic industry who were responsible for churning out titles like Mystery Tales for Atlas, as they hung on by their fingernails until their luck would change for the better. Some of the other tales of terror in this book are "This Corpse is Mine", "The Rat Race", and "He Went for a Train-Ride".

Stan Lee script
Second City Collection
Stan Lee was one of the people responsible for preventing the Atlas Comics ship from sinking under the waves during the tumultuous post-war period, when comics were at a low point. He was able to keep food in the stomachs and clothes on the backs of his staff of writers and artists by putting out these mini shockers, along with romance books, crime potboilers, and humor comics, essentially anything to keep the lights on. Even his determination began to waver during this era, but the effort would not prove to be fruitless, as the staff at Atlas were unknowingly setting the stage for an incredible rebirth once the Silver Age got underway, it is in books such as Mystery Tales #5 that you can witness this phenomenon beginning to take shape.

robot story; Romita-a
Second City Collection
A couple of the names that pop up in the credits of this issue are those of Stan Lee and John Romita, two men who would loom large in the future of Marvel Comics, and here we see them toiling away, collaborating on these tawdry thrillers, specifically on a three-page "punch line" story called "The Man Who was a God". Interestingly, there is a short sci-fi / horror tale at the end of this book called "The Iron Man", and although it is completely uncredited, one can only wonder if Stan "The Man" had something to do with this quickie, and perhaps filed the concept away for future dusting off. It's these small kernels of ideas that appear in Mystery Tales that would eventually germinate into grandiose concepts, and the clues hidden in these sleeper books are just one of the many reasons to snap up copies for your personal collection.

classic Everett cover
Second City Collection
Mystery Tales #40 was prominently featured on the hit TV series "Lost", making that issue quite possibly the most-famous of the run. Few fans of that series might be aware that issue #9 of Mystery Tales features a story in its back pages named "Lost!", which concerns hidden loot and a couple who are trapped in a cave for two decades, one can't help but think there may be something to this strange connection between the show and the comic. Other spooky stories in this comic include the tales "The Specimen", "Hunger", "Ashes to Ashes", and "The Man in the Morgue", add in the classic Bill Everett cover and you have a nifty little book filled with things that go bump in the night, plus that mysterious "Lost/Lost!" thing.
