Everett art
The Jon Berk Collection
Born of a merger between several moderately successful pulp and comic publishing houses, Centaur Publications was short-lived, lasting only the scant years of the major World War II comic book craze. But, in that time, some of the art form's finest illustrators passed through their scrappy lineup, including future Timely superstars and DC pioneers like Bill Everett, Fred Guardineer, and Basil Wolverton.

The flagship title of their lineup, Amazing Mystery Funnies, was an incubator for many of the ideas and archetypes that would come to define the Golden Age of comics. Sci-fi, action, westerns, jungle adventure, and other pulp derived yarns burst forth from its overstuffed pages. As Centaur fought for paper, printing presses, and newsstand space, print runs were low and distribution was spotty, making this title among the rarest of classic comic series, and thereby highly desirable to collectors of the historically significant and the extremely scarce.

RARE! classic Everett bondage cover; drug story
Bill Everett began his career in advertising, and bounced around the commercial art industry for a few years before landing his first job in comics over at Centaur Publishing, where his talents easily translated over to the burgeoning art form. His fluid designs and ability to create eye-catching covers immediately earned him a place in the history of the industry, going on to create Namor, the Sub-Mariner, and Marvel's Daredevil later on in life. His skills are evident in this early cover design for Amazing Mystery Funnies V2 #2, all of the Golden Age tropes are in place, bondage, woman in peril, scary villain in bizarre costume, and weird gadgetry, all rendered with panache and assuredness, this is one of Everett's most-beloved covers from his days at Centaur.

Bill Everett cvr/art; Burgos, Gustavson, Guardineer art
Larson Copy
One of the rarest of Everett Golden Age covers, and among his finest, the sci-fi / fantasy imagery on this cover prefigures the shlocky B-movies of the 1950s, with their buxom femme fatales and outlandishly attired warriors. Paying homage to comic book's pulp roots, this busy and memorable cover piece is a cult favorite of fans of the obscure and the wonderful gifts the GA has to offer.

The Arrow begins! classic cover by Lubbers (10/40)
The Arrow can lay claim to the honor of being the first superhero to rely on archery as their main power or skill, and in doing so, influencing some of the great bowmen in comicdom, such as the Green Arrow and Hawkeye. First appearing in Centaur's Funny Pages anthology, the Arrow garnered enough of a fan base to be awarded his own book, which, unfortunately, only ran for three issues. The crimson-clad bullseye sharpshooter would go on to find new life in the public domain and appear in rebooted form over the years, but his first self-titled book is a true cult collectible.

yellow peril cover; Irwin Hasen art (11/40)
The short-lived series, Detective Eye, was certainly one of the more oddball entries into the Golden Age annals, as the title's protagonist "the Eye" was simply that, a disembodied eye that championed the concept of justice among beings it encountered. It would be difficult to find a more abstract and original hero in any comic from any era, save the Underground Comix of the 60s and 70s. Enjoying cult success in the pages of Keen Detective Funnies, the Eye remains one of the more interesting and esoteric characters in the history of the industry.
Other than the detached cover this book is an 8.0.

rare! The Clock Begins (Clock cover) (11/36)
Lost Valley Copy
Published the same month as Funny Pages #6, this issue contains the one of the two first appearances of the Clock, who is considered by many to be the bridge that connects the pulp magazines of the 20s and 30s to the newborn comic book industry. The first comic character to hide his identity with a mask, the Clock was a master of disguise and a hypnotist, who had the additional benefit of massive personal wealth that allowed him to build gadgetry and a hidden lair, obviously becoming an influence on Batman and many other superheroes inspired by the mysterious crime-fighter. The historical importance of this comic cannot be overlooked, as it is basically ground zero for cape books, a key Golden Age book, and a major chapter in the story of the industry.
