Lost Valley Copy
Highest Graded
On the heels of the popularity of the pulps, crime and drama-themed comics were a mainstay of the early market. Before superheroes dominated the four-color scene, classic covers such as this Creig Flessel prison break illustration exhilarated readers of the era. The anthology titles of the early days of comics covered a wide spectrum of genres. Within readers would thrill to action, mystery, crime, espionage, westerns, science fiction, you name it. In this issue alone, stories starring Speed Saunders, Hope Hazard, G-Woman, Cosmo, the Phantom of Disguise, Bruce Nelson, Bart Regan, Buck Marshall, and Slam Bradley were pored over, re-read and swapped with friends. Typical of the pre-superhero comic, editors threw in the kitchen sink to try and appeal to the largest audience possible.
The first few issues of Detective Comics are difficult to find in any condition, and this smart-looking copy from the Lost Valley pedigree is indeed a rare find.

Overstreet Guide 2018 FN- (5.5) value = $10,100.

1st app Batman by Bob Kane; one of the top three most important comics ever published!
After DC Comics' huge success with Superman, editors were looking for another superhero to cash in on, and young creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger came up with The Batman. The team was inspired by Douglas Fairbanks' portrayal of Zorro, Lee Falk's comic strip The Phantom, Leonardo DaVinci's ornithopter (glider) blueprints which had large bat-like wings, the classic mystery film The Bat Whispers, and the mystery novel The Circular Staircase. As a result, in May of 1939, DC hit pay-dirt again with one of the most memorable and iconic fictional characters in history, Batman! Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads millionaire Bruce Wayne to train himself to physical and intellectual perfection and don a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime. Detective Comics 27 is one of the most desirable and valuable comic books to own, an important part of American pop culture history.
This incomplete copy offers an opportunity to the collectors as loose pages and covers may come to market at any time for those who may be looking for a reconstruction project. Even single pages from this book have fetched impressive prices. Or - you can rebuild this one!

Overstreet Guide 2018 GD (2.0) value = $170,000.

1st app. Dr. Death; 2nd Batman cover
The dark castle, the night gloom, the dark cape, the evil scientist -- the influence of pre-code horror cinema on Bob Kane's nocturnal creation is nowhere more evident than on this classic and painfully rare cover, one of the pre-Robin Detective issues over which Bat-collectors drool. You haven't really experienced the crude power of these early Bat-books until you've seen them in their original pulpy glory, and this second-ever cover appearance by the Batman is still hugely powerful to this day. The story therein pits the Caped Crusader against Dr. Karl Hellfern, aka Doctor Death, who, like all great villains, intends to take over the world, but first, must rid himself of that meddling Batman, which leads to an action-packed tale of mayhem. It's well documented that once Batman received his own title the stories became quite a bit more tame than the ones depicted in early Detective Comics. This issue is no exception as Batman painfully takes a bullet to the shoulder in this tale. How's that for gritty?
This iconic cover stands, in all its glory, at an unassuming VG- and has a bit of tape on an interior page but the memorable front cover still impresses.

Overstreet Guide 2018 VG- (3.5) value = $31,500.

classic Batman over castle cover by Bob Kane! 1st Batplane! (9/39)
Detective issues 27 and 38 may get all the attention, but true Bat-fanatics and Golden Age aficionados know that pre-Robin issues 28 through 37 contain some of the most moody and compelling Batman stories ever published, and some of the most dynamic covers of the pre-war era. This issue is probably the most famous and most difficult to obtain, and became the iconic image of the caped crusader for the Golden Age. Dark, brooding, and classic, this cinematic image more than any other captures the drama and crude power of early Batman, and easily demonstrates why so many Bat-collectors are nearly fetishistic about this brief but fertile period in the character's history. No serious DC Golden Age collection is complete without this masterpiece, which explains the feeding frenzy that ensues on the rare instances that copies make it to market. The Batman tale contained within this book's pages bears the distinction of introducing not only the Batgyro, precursor to the Batplane, but also the famous Batarang, a useful tool still brandished by the Caped Crusader to great effect in the modern day. Batman uses these gadgets in an attempt to rescue his fiancee, Julie Madison, from the Monk, a hooded and robed baddie, who employs hypnosis and gorillas in his nefarious plans!
This copy has a detached cover and considerable wear around the edges but the hues remain strong on the image of Batman looming over the foreboding horizon.

Bob Kane classic cvr/art; 1st origin of Batman, gun holster on utility belt (11/39)
Surprisingly, Detective 27 contains no origin for Batman. In Detective Comics 33, the story of how Batman came to be is told for the very first time and includes the murder of his parents. This origin has become part of American culture which was later reprinted in Batman 1. Also of note is the unusual and infamous cover image, in which the Dark Knight is seen armed and dangerous, breaking the code against guns that was to become a cornerstone of the character's makeup over the years. A startling and classic image, from the beloved first year of the hero's adventures, rich with gothic shadows and crude, almost nightmarish graphics.
This well-worn copy has a detached cover and a split spine. Given the intact inks, the overall look is rather nice especially if you enjoy a natural patina. Truth be told, this book fetches a fine price at any grade.

classic hypodermic needle/bondage cover
The book's jarring cover inaugurates a tradition that has remained nearly undisturbed to the modern day, with the Caped Crusader as the featured star of this venerable title. This classic image captures all the gruesome drama and atmosphere beloved of year-one Batman and shows why the character quickly vaulted to the top of the collective consciousness of Golden Age comic readers. The horrific mood and tone of the inaugural Bat-tales give them a feel unlike anything that came after, directly inspiring the early-70s Adams revamp and the look of the blockbuster 1989 movie. The hero's popularity is evident not only in his cover appearance but by the bright-red banner assuring readers he would appear in every issue thereafter.
This well-loved copy remains exceptionally vivid as Batman's brooding blacks and blues stand out among neutral greens and yellows. This classic pre-code cover, by Batman co-creator Bob Kane, is an exciting piece to add to any collection for both its intensity and rarity. We can only guess what little Tommy Thorson would say if he knew how much his beloved copy of Detective Comics #35 would be worth someday.

Marking the turnover of Detective Comics and cementing it as Batman's title, this book is emblematic of Batman's darker, pre-Robin tales. The shocking cover was sure to rattle readers as it loomed over newsstands in 1940's America, offering a tantalizing brew of fear and excitement that readers could count on monthly as Batman graced the cover of every issue of Detective Comics hereafter. This cover also serves as a precursor to later horror titles that would be blunted by the Comics Code Authority. Needles penetrating vulnerable necks was sure to be a no-no. This copy looks spectacular despite the pieces out of the front cover, the green has a rich tone and the yellow is surprisingly bright.

classic Batman cover; 1st app. Hugo Strange
Detective Comics #36 marks the first appearance of Hugo Strange -- Batman's first arch-enemy, and modern collectors will know him as the primary antagonist of the critically acclaimed video game Batman: Arkham City. Rarely are copies of this pre-Robin Detective issue made available for sale. The instantly recognizable cover of this issue is one of the more memorable of the Golden Age Detectives, and the action within the book is equally enthralling, centering around Strange's use of a fog machine to cover up his underlings' crimes, Batman eventually thwarts the ne'er-do-well and locks him up, but Strange vows to reap his revenge.
This well-traveled copy of Detective #36 has a lot of wear that is controverted by the stunning color quality of the detached cover. Swooping in to bash some baddies, Batman knows how to make an entrance in all his four-color glory.

Bob Kane cvr/art; Joe Shuster, Fred Guardineer art, last Batman solo issue
This comic would be the last time the Batman would fight crime as a solo act in Detective Comics as he was to be accompanied by his trusty sidekick, Robin, in an effort to appeal to readers of a younger demographic. While this is not the last pulpy, moody, dark Detective cover, it represents a shift in the tone and demeanor of the early, dangerous, lone-wolf vigilante, which is only one reason Batmaniacs should be chomping at the bit to get their hands on this copy.
This scruffy but lovable copy holds considerable value as an incomplete book, with the potential to be married as a collector's item all on its own. This rare copy still retains the best part of the cover, featuring Batman battling a spooky specter.

Bob Kane/Jerry Robinson cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Robin (Dick Grayson)
One of the most important issues of the Golden Age, Detective Comics #38 marks the promising debut of the best-known sidekick in the history of comics: Robin, the Boy Wonder! Dick Grayson, ward of millionaire Bruce Wayne, lends a hand to the Dark Knight when just one hero won't do. Created in 1940 by the team of Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson, Dick Grayson's tragic backstory about his similarly slain parents made him the perfect companion for the ominously orphaned Bruce Wayne. Robin attracted younger readers and doubled the sales of Bat-comics solidifying the Batman mythos that would continue to grow in popularity through today. There have been many different iterations of the teenagers to don Robin's trademark yellow cape, red suit, green boots and gloves but there will only ever be one original Boy Wonder. Bob Kane's signature style depicts an exuberant Boy Wonder bursting onto the cover and into our hearts.
The inks are as bright as ever and Robin's bold colors pop of the unique peach backdrop. The spine shows some wear with tape on the interior cover, but the other edges and corners are relatively unmarred, giving this comic a striking appeal beyond its grade.
