crm/ow pgs; Eldon Denini Copy!
1st Slam Bradley/Spy by Siegel & Shuster; SEMINAL KEY, the title that put the "D.C." in DC Comics!
Having practically started the comic book market singlehandedly with the historic New Fun in 1935, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson partnered with Harry Donenfeld in 1937 to again make history with Detective Comics #1, which launched their new publishing venture as well as kick-started the careers of Superman creators, Siegel and Shuster. The crude Yellow Peril cover helped sell the book to the vital pulp market and hinted at the mysterious yarns spun within. Detective Comics #1 was the beginning of a new beast in print media. Printed more than a year before Action Comics #1, and two ahead of Detective #27, this comic set the stage for a new cast of heroes poised to literarily take on the growing threat of Nazism.
This comic is originally from the collection of Eldon Dedini, prolific New Yorker and Playboy illustrator and cartoonist. It was bought off the newsstand by Dedini, who created his own stenciled numbering system to catalog his collection. While the cover exhibits minor wear, there are only six copies graded higher so it's tough to find the comic in any condition. The gravitas of this book weighs heavily as this is the starting place of great things to come, and should be the target of anyone who considers themselves a serious collector.

Overstreet Guide 2017 VG+ (4.5) value = $30,375.

rare in any grade; Shuster art
The misty, night-shrouded streets barely contain the gloss of the rain-slicked pavement. The soft hiss of car tires conjoin with the faint, sharp sounds of a struggle in the dark alleys of the city. These are the moods and milieu of the early run of Detective Comics, the darkest and certainly most atmospheric of all Golden Age DC titles and one which excited readers even before the appearance of a certain Dark Knight. The first several years of this compelling comic, starring Bob Kane and Bill Finger's immortal creation, are among the most revered and collectible of all Golden Age comics. The finely-wrought covers by pulp maestros Craig Flessel and Fred Guardineer, along with the dynamic interior art by Joe Shuster and a host of others, mixed well with the riveting stories by dependable yarn-spinners Jerry Siegel and Gardner Fox, to make this title ground zero for the emerging comic medium.
This comic is originally from the collection of Eldon Dedini, prolific New Yorker and Playboy illustrator and cartoonist. It was bought off the newsstand by Dedini, who created his own stenciled numbering system to catalog his collection.

Overstreet Guide 2017 F/VF (7.0) value = $28,500.

Creig Flessel cvr/art; rare in any grade (5/37)
On the heels of the popularity of the pulps, crime and drama themed comics were a mainstay of the early market. Before superheroes dominated the four color scene, classic covers such as this prison break exhilarated readers. The first few issues of Detective Comics are difficult to find in any condition.

Flessel cvr/art; rare in any grade (6/37)
For most readers, Detective Comics equals Batman, the character who put the comic in every back pocket. Before the vigilante descended upon an unsuspecting Gotham, Detective Comics served as a home for the pulp-inspired adventures of a handful of private eyes and devious villains.

Comics that pre-date the hero craze are fascinating. The raw power and stark graphic motifs instantly transport the reader into a noirish landscape of shadow and danger. These important issues are a rare glimpse into an industry standing on the precipice of the superhero, and DC (Detective Comics) was the catalyst that sparked the flame. The introduction of Superman and Batman shortly after the publishing of these issues changed the comicbook industry from a small fish to possibly the largest facet of the entertainment world as we know it today. These remarkable and compelling covers, most by the genius Creig Flessel, are a time machine to a pulpier, grittier era, and are beloved of Golden Age comic collectors.

Rare! Flessel cvr/art! 2 stories by Siegel & Shuster (7/37)
Published in July of 1937, this issue features the 1st appearance of Larry Steele.

Slam Bradley has been relegated to the stature of a footnote in the history of the comicbook, acting as a bridge between the pulp fascination with the hard-boiled detective and the mythological superheroes just over the horizon when this book was published. Like movies of the day, many of the stories were planned as serials, forcing the buyer to pick up the comic monthly while other stories contained therein were one-and-done. Detective Comics #5 is a book that sits astride two eras. Slam Bradley's co-creators, Siegel and Shuster, would soon give birth to Superman, and leave their tough private eye in the dust, although he occasionally pops up in current comics. This book remains a true classic of an art form on the verge of a great metamorphosis.

Early Detective Comics are rare, and they are brutal, filled with the kind of pulp tales that defined the term, the stories are straight and to the point. This issue opens with the tale of a mad scientist who places a human brain in a gorilla's head for no particular reason, the ensuing rampage is doubtless the inspiration for the moody Creig Flessel cover art on this classic. The anthology insanity continues through out the book, stuffed to the brim with the pre-Batman tales that defined the fledgeling series. Speed Saunders, Larry Steele, Cosmo, the Phantom of Disguise, Bruce Nelson and Slam Bradley all make appearances, just to name a few.
