Wraparound cover, Joe Kubert pencils and inks; 13.75" x 20.5"
House of Mystery
Very few artists in the history of comics have made as deep an impression on the industry as Joe Kubert, not only has he left behind an enormous body of work that spanned decades, but he also fathered two gifted artists in his sons Andy and Adam, as well as tutoring many young students in his school that would go on to be respected talents as well.

His work in the 1980s showcases the culmination of years of honing one's craft, a deft sense of design, pinpoint control of his medium, and freedom born from years of intense study. This breathtaking wraparound cover for DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest shows the host of the House of Mystery, Cain, sitting astride the titular haunted mansion. Taking a page from Bernie Wrightson's playbook, Kubert weaves a magical spell with this piece, playing with scale and perspective, he creates a loving homage to the long-running frightfest. Fans of Bronze Age DC and second-wave horror comics are doubtless waiting for their chance to land this masterpiece for their personal collection.

Joe Kubert pencils and inks; image size 10" x 15"
If there are two things Joe Kubert is known for drawing (besides soldiers), they are dinosaurs and cavemen so it can be theorized that Joe had a blast while designing this cover which features his favorite subject matter doing battle with fighter jets in this time-travel mashup. Kubert's kinetic style breathes life into the frontispiece for From Beyond the Unknown #12, a pterodactyl dominates the action, as the background explodes with intricate detail, and the missile streaming toward the reader provides the icing on the cake for this awesome early Bronze Age offering from an industry giant.

Joe Kubert pencils and inks; 10" x 15"
This Joe Kubert cover revels in the early 80s obsession with science-fiction that had swept over popular culture thanks in no small part to the original "Star Wars" movie trilogy, it seemed that far-out space action was everywhere, on the small screen to the movie theaters, adult-themed sci-fi mags like Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated, and Omni were commonplace, and the trickle-down effect touched almost every corner of the comic book world. Characters like Warlord and Killraven existed in worlds that mashed up barbarian warriors with spaceships and lasers, even horror anthologies like the Unexpected got in on the fun. This Kubert cover with a little girl in pigtails looming over a trio of miniature spacemen is a fun and strangely compelling illustration. Generally speaking, Kubert art from any era is a popular commodity and this page is no exception.

Joe Kubert cvr/art; 1st app. of the Black Canary; appears in new Arrow TV series! dinosaur bondage cover
When Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino created Black Canary, who made her debut in this very issue, they probably didn't expect the character to become a long-lasting heroine in the DC lexicon, but, over seventy years later, she cotinues to be a popular heroine, and one of the first to ever appear in the publisher's output. Did we happen to mention the super-cool Lee Elias dinosaur cover? Dinosaurs are awesome...

Presenting a beautiful color palette, with solid blacks, deep greens, bright yellows, and clean whites, this cover is in impressive shape. Minor spine wear does not detract from the overall attractiveness of this classic book, which features a memorable Kubert illustration and a Hawkman cameo, this copy is sure to please Flash fans of all ages.

1st Sgt. Rock (4/59)
Concocted by Robert Kanigher, known for his emotional, finely wrought genre fictions, and written by the equally pulpy Bob Haney, graced with illustrations by the immensely gifted Joe Kubert, Sgt. Rock is, bar none, the single most popular and best-loved of all comics war characters. Building on a similar character from a recent G.I. Combat issue, Kanigher, Haney, and Kubert delivered mainstream comics' first truly haunted, realistic war hero -- flying in the face of the two-fisted brawler yarns and hysterical anti-war potboilers that comprised war comics to that point. They replaced them with an affecting, shamelessly heartfelt true-war serial that followed a tired, battered, idiosyncratic force of weary warriors facing impossible odds and beating them with cynical aplomb and sweaty determination. One of the scarcest and most important of DC Silver Age keys, and a true American classic.

Silver Age begins here; origin and 1st app. Flash (Barry Allen) & 1st app. Iris West
It is widely held that Showcase #4 didn't just introduce the modern version of the Flash -- the issue may have saved the entire comic book industry from impending collapse. Before Julius Schwartz re-designed the Fastest Man Alive, superheroes were an afterthought in post-war comic books. Now, sixty-three years later, most comics not starring your favorite superheroes are often left to the weirdos in the corner. Showcase #4 made a strong impression on readers as the story resonated on multiple levels. The Flash is now enjoying renewed popularity with a weekly television show on the CW network, bringing forth another character from print to film and increasing demand for his first appearance. What price can you put on this book? A hero book which is a hero unto itself, acting as the savior for an entire wing of international pop culture. Who knows what may have become of comics if it were not for this special piece of inspiration.

This copy is an unquestionable beauty for its grade. It is widely held that Showcase #4 didn't just introduce the modern version of the Flash, the issue may have saved the entire comic book industry from impending collapse.
