Kirby cvr; Ditko art; origin & 1st app. Spider-Man; 1st Uncle Ben & Aunt May (8/62)
This is the Silver Age equivalent of Action Comics #1: a historic, game-changing key issue that acts as a pivot point from what came before, and what came after. The creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, this radical new concept featured a passive, neurotic, everyman hero; an unusually emotionally charged origin story touching on issues of mortality and family tragedy; a worldview grounded solidly in a real, recognizable universe obviously our own; and open-ended storytelling that demanded and rewarded close attention and regular readership. This milestone has also proven to be the success story of comics investment, growing rapidly and unstoppably in value and becoming one of the few completely bulletproof investments in recent times.

Ditko cvr/art; Kirby art; robot story
In the debut issue of Spiderman, Lee and company hedged their bets by placing the Fantastic Four front and center to attract new readers to an unproven title. What a difference a year makes, when the new megastar on the block relegates the veteran Torch to guest-star status. The comic boasts a classic cover that appealed directly to the new youth market, which was already influencing pop culture with their hard-earned allowance money.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st Silver Age Captain America (3/64)
The love that Americans and pro-freedom patriots all over the world share for Steve Rogers has shown no signs of abatement. Captain America's renaissance in popularity may even eclipse his fame during World War II, when his comic books sold in the millions. Heralding the first appearance of the Star-Spangled Avenger since the Golden Age, Avengers #4 is a prime example of the genius of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. With Captain America practically running off the cover and into your living room, this bombastic image screams with excitement. With the continued success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the value of this iconic comic has only one place to go, and that's up!

first Spider-Man crossover
Stan Lee revived and redefined the concept of the team-up book in earlier issues of the Avengers, here Lee keeps the fire lit under his new title by putting a fan favorite, Spider-Man, prominently featured on the cover. Already a megastar by this point, Spidey never failed to bring flocks of dedicated readers along when appearing in other titles, and this was no exception. Jack Kirby drafted one of his few images of the teenage wallcrawler on this rare treat of a cover. Older readers may have been appalled to see their friendly neighborhood Spider-Man get top billing over Captain America, but, hey, it was the 60s and the times, they were a-changin'.

Kirby & Simon cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Captain America, Bucky, & Red Skull; classic Hitler cover! (3/41)
We've said it before, but it bears repeating that the popularity of characters such as Captain America and the willingness of comic writers and artists to confront the Axis threat went a long way toward mobilizing a heretofore isolationist American populace in the long, dark days of the late 30s and early 40s. While many other art forms desperately avoided or ignored the ugly truth of Europe's rapid slide into fascism and Nazism in an obvious attempt to protect their own financial interests overseas, the almost entirely US-based comics business, staffed and developed largely by fugitives from those same wartime horrors, boldly waved the flag of freedom, most notably in this instant classic. Readers immediately fell in love with this gutsy, gleefully aggressive new hero, who wore his allegiance on his sleeve (well, his forehead, at any rate) and made his intent powerfully clear by taking aim directly at the mustachioed puss of the Fuhrer himself. In these pre-Pearl Harbor days, such an image was simply incendiary, and copies flew off shelves almost immediately, leading to a nearly 78-year run as the preeminent symbol of American heroism.

1st app. & origin Daredevil by Everett; Kirby cover (4/64)
You can tell from the Spider-Man plug on the cover that Marvel had, by the time of this book's release, become known as a hero machine by pumping out high-gloss, high-energy heroes and heroines, which sold like hotcakes. In this case, the House of Ideas picked up a Biro hero name, which had been left to linger, dusted it off and added the enticing gimmick of making their Daredevil a blind lawyer, adding both modern intrigue and a great hook. It would take a while for the character to fully hit its stride, but the dynamic Kirby cover and ravishing Everett interiors attracted readers and established Daredevil as a unique and mature alternative to cosmic adventuring and teenage angst.
