origin & 1st app. Justice Society of America; truly iconic cover, one of the milestones of the Golden Age
Featuring the origin and first appearance of the Justice Society of America, All Star Comics #3 is regarded as one of the most-important comics of all time. The issue ushered in the concept of superhero teams that would eventually give rise to the Justice League, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Avengers. The book's classic cover by E.E. Hibbard showcases a team roster which includes the Atom, Sandman, Spectre, Flash, Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Green Lantern, and Hour Man.

Showing some of the signs of surviving the past eighty years, this copy of All Star Comics #3 still presents bright colors, the flesh tones and the heroes' costumes are resplendent, standing out proudly against the yellow background. The book has impressive eye appeal at grade, with any wear relegated to the spine and corners. An important Golden Age key at a price point that opens up opportunities to a wider field of bidders.

Overstreet Guide 2018 VG (4.0) value = $11,600.

classic Flessel Mr. Chang cvr
In an homage to the first issue of Detective Comics, this yellow peril cover expands on the evocative imagery on that famous book. The early, pre-Batman Detective Comics were a powerhouse in the overstuffed world of the crime anthology comic. Introducing some of the more-popular stars of the pre-superhero era: Speed Saunders, Larry Steele, Cosmo, the Phantom of Disguise, and Slam Bradley ruled the roost before caped crusaders crashed the party. The Creig Flessel cover design hints at the guilty pleasures contained in this comic, and dares viewers to open the pages and discover just what jewels are contained in this mysterious book.

classic Flessel cover (11/37)
One of the many perks of working in the vintage comic industry is getting to experience all of the amazing books first hand. After the initial thrill of seeing top-tier keys, it's issues like Detective Comics #9 that begin to take on greater meaning. Pre-Batman issues of Detective Comics are pure pulp gold. With intense and expertly drawn covers, these relics of yesteryear have a specific feel that is unlike anything superhero comics have to offer. When you get to enjoy the added bonus of the shimmering hues like the ones on the cover of this VG copy, you'll feel fortunate indeed.

Creig Flessel cvr/art (1/38)
Detective Comics set a dark and moody tone from the outset of the title's existence as each issue helped build the perfect environment for Batman to walk in and make himself comfortable. The Creig Flessel illustration on the cover of Detective Comics #11 is nothing short of breathtaking as the sense of grit, danger, and excitement sustains the test of time to deliver a gut-punch to the ever-jaded cover-chasing collectors of today.

This F/VF example presents powerful chromatics where flashy reds and glimmering yellows abound. The amazing eye appeal of this classic is worth the price of admission alone, and the Slam Bradley, Cosmo, and Larry Steele features inside the book are the gravy on the disco fries.

Overstreet Guide 2018 F/VF (7.0) value = $5,100.

100 pgs; Fred Ray cvr; Siegel & Finger stories; Flessel & Kane art
The runaway success of the 1939 and 1940 New York World's Fair square bound comics prompted DC to launch a quarterly compilation comic with many of the same features, thereby establishing the first major superhero anthology comic of its kind to run regularly, and beginning a series that would last, with few variations on its formula, for nearly 50 years. It also boasted the first appearance of the "Big Two", Superman and Batman, on the same cover of a newsstand comic (the 1940 NYWF comic being sold largely at the fair itself), which gave kids around the country the thrill of a lifetime.
