CGC # 0966282001, Light Tan to Off-White pages, Origin & 1st app of Kaanga, Wambi, White Panther and Captain Terry Thunder!
Lou Fine cvr; 1st Wambi; 1st Kaanga; 1st Capt Thunder
Fiction House knew that times were changing by the late 1930s as their venerable line of pulps were suddenly outsold by those garish newcomers, comics books. Comics were the parent-baiting, oversized blasts of color that made the world of pulp fiction seem dry and dated. Publisher Thurman T. Scott quickly segued into the new medium, figuring if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, and dominated the market with beautifully rendered, tightly plotted tales featuring macho action and saucy femme fatales. By the time this debut issue of Jungle Comics appeared, the title's formula was evident; the art staff assigned by the Eisner/Iger studio was already bringing the Alex Raymond style of slick photorealism to the otherwise crude pages of the era. This historic first issue features the inaugural appearance of Fiction House's stable of exotic Tarzan-esque heroes, including Ka'a'nga, whose instant success soon led to his own solo title, and Wambi, a favorite of young readers for many years.

Off-White pages, Classic Cover by Lou Fine. Conserved Grade. CBCS notes: Amateur conservation includes 2 small pieces of cover glued to 1st wrap.
classic Lou Fine cover; rare!
Early comics were hit and miss, with heroes getting renamed, redressed, rethought, and sometimes outright stolen from other companies as publishers desperately raced to meet deadlines and feed a voraciously hungry new readership. In the case of Science Comics' Dynamo, he was originally named Electro, then, probably due to some arcane copyright issue or maybe just panic on the part of Fox's editorial staff, he was rechristened with his new, more recognizable name. Not that any of that matters -- what matters, really, are the gleefully insane sci-fi covers that the character was slapped onto to grab the still-sizable pulp adventure market. In this case, the reliable Lou Fine, surely one of the Golden Age's preeminent cover artists, was tapped to draft an image sure to capture the eyes and dimes of harried readers rushing past newsstands at rush hour. It's truly remarkable how Fine's classy and supple lines are applied to this lurid, lunatic scene, raising an otherwise garish tableaux to a level of perverse genius. The layout, also, is classical pulp cover, with the damsel in distress neatly foregrounded to attract the Dads, while the bat-crazy space dude in back is given plenty of room to show off his considerable anatomy, all the better to entrap young and impressionable lads still swooning over Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Want proof this sort of thing works? Well, we're still talking about it now, aren't we?

SCARCE; Daredevil cvr/story; Baily art (7/41)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Okay, so the Silver Streak's origin is kinda convoluted and odd and it involves car racing and taxis and a Swami and resurrecting the dead and listen, here's all you need to know: as usual, Lev Gleason gathered a wildly diverse array of art styles and talents in one slam-bang book, then let them loose on stories obviously concocted on strong coffee, lots of smokes, and hurried huddles at the automat, lending the Silver Streak's adventures the delirious white-knuckle thrill of a fever dream, or a gloriously cheap B-movie serial. Coveted by collectors, this series didn't exactly sell like crazy, and had low print runs from the get-go, so if you're hankering for rarity, uniqueness, and strong bragging rights, you can't really beat this gonzoid hero series, a cult favorite since nearly the day it hit the stands.
