classic "Remember Pearl Harbor" Japanese WWII cover
Pearl Harbor was an event that altered the course of human history, it was the first time Americans had been attacked on their home soil, and it led to the US finally jumping into WWII and helping defeat the Axis powers that were attempting to take over the world. It was commonplace in propaganda of the time to demonize adversaries with caricatures that would be deemed deeply racist and offensive in the politically correct environment of the modern day, but such tropes were de rigueur during the trying times of the war. This cover by Al Avison continues the tradition of Captain America bashing his country's enemies in the face, and the addition of fangs to his Japanese opponent was sure to dehumanize the enemy and make it easier for people to accept the casualties that were piling up in the Pacific theater. The addition of the "Remember Pearl Harbor" logo on this cover makes this a special collectible both for its relative scarcity and its patriotic fervor.

Presenting bright yellows and deep blues and greens, this cover has enormous eye appeal, the colors are still vibrant all these years later, the comic is in admirable condition, with only a small amount of wear around the edges. Caps from this time period are hard to find and even more difficult to acquire in decent shape. This is an important issue in the run and will be a popular item at auction.

Overstreet Guide 2018 F/VF (7.0) value = $5,010.

classic Kirby Hitler bondage/torture cvr; origin & 1st app. of the Witness
Taking over the duties as cover illustrator, Jack Kirby shows his early influences were clearly taken from the Alex Schomburg school of thought. This book bears the distinction of being one of the earliest collaborations between Kirby and Stan Lee, two men who would impact the art form, quite possibly, more than any other duo this side of Simon and Shuster. This issue is a very rare and sought-after book that almost never surfaces in such a high grade, once again, the Destroyer is shown springing into action, against Adolf Hitler himself, on the cover of this historic publication.

Kirby WWII Nazi bondage/torture cover
Another entry in the Golden Age Axis-bashing theme, U.S.A. Comics #1 features a ferocious cover image as Kirby and Simon's Defender bounds to the rescue of a soldier held in bondage by a Nazi witch and her evil lackeys. This early Jack Kirby masterwork of illustration presents the best of what war-era comic books had to offer; a costumed hero, bristling with muscles, rushing onward into the fray against the sinister forces of evil. It seems fairly obvious that the Defender was an early incarnation of an idea that would soon become the legendary Captain America. Essentially a testing ground for new concepts and characters until the appearance of Captain America in issue #6, this classic inaugural book of yet another hard to find title is sure to excite the growing fan base for WWII Timely titles, whose rarity and desirability only increase over time.

A pastiche of pastel colors adorn the cover of this FN/VF book, the chromatics show no sign of the years as they are still bright and clear. Tight binding, lovely centering and clean registration make this copy a real winner. The classic Jack Kirby illustration reveals an artist that is still learning his craft, but the seeds of his later domination of the medium are obvious. Golden Age Kirby covers are among the most valuable of the period, and this beloved illustration is a definite fan favorite.

Kirby hanging/bondage cover; hanging panels (9/41)
Bucky in bondage. Check. Hangman's noose. Check. Nazis. Check. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby kept the potion flowing with the perfect formula that churned out timeless covers time and again. It's likely that the constant drumbeat of anti-Axis sentiment put forth by Kirby and his contemporaries in the darkening days of the late 30s and early 40s had as much to do with America's eventual acceptance of its role in the unfolding conflicts engulfing the globe as the shocking attack on Pearl Harbor. This issue features the Captain America adventures; "The Camera Fiend and his Darts of Doom", "Meet the Fang, Arch-Fiend of the Orient", "The Hangman", and "Trap for a Traitor".

Welp, Bucky's tied up to something again. This time, though, Cap is facing off against... okay, what exactly are those things and why are they in a cemetery? I can't even. Seriously, though, this is among the nuttiest and coolest of Golden Age Cap covers, with perfectly grisly colors and nicely spotted blacks adding to the gruesome mood of the piece. One assumes that, after fighing off Nazis and Japanese soldiers all the time, Cap would be grateful for the change of pace, but Bucky must be thinking, "what? again?" It's impossible to understate the rarity and demand for Timely Caps, so we won't even try -- be assured this is a tough one to find in any grade.

Cream to Off-White pages
WWII cover; Hitler app.
The early days of WWII were a frightening and tumultuous time, with the American people stiffening their spines and showing a brave front to the world, but inwardly full of doubt, fear, panic, and rage, with the war coming hot on the heels of a depression that seemed to grind on interminably. The frenetic, almost psychotic mood of the time exploded into the culture via anarchic humor, hyperpatriotic fervor, and, in comics, especially, a bloodthirsty hunger for more and more jingoistic derring do. Timely was in the forefront of this movement, with the covers of Captain America reaching a feverish level of ultra-violence and nearly panicked energy by early 1943. Among the most violent and hysterical of WWII covers, comics fans go nuts for these rare treasures, especially jarring and startling in our modern, PC era.
