Cap America vs hillbilly battle cvr
Picking up where Jack Kirby left off Al Avison turns in a wonderful cover piece for Captain America Comics #11, which features Cap battling a new enemy, a gang of evil hillbillies, this cover is based on the story "The Feud Murders" inside the book, and serves as an interesting twist on the run of Nazi covers up to this point. Perhaps signalling a turn away from Kirby's inflammatory anti-Axis obsession, this book is of some note in the history of Captain America, as it is the launching point of the decades-long estrangement the character would spend away from his co-creator, Kirby, who would return to the fold and his progeny in Marvel's influential Silver Age.

Al Avison WWII Nazi robot bondage cvr
Young Stanley Leiber, aka Stan Lee, aspiring novelist and brash young upstart, was already putting his mark on the Marvel stable long before there was a Marvel, during the glory days of WWII Timely publications, penning typically grandiose yarns in between office gopher jaunts and editorial errands. Aided by the able art staff of Timely, the departure of Cap creator Jack Kirby was smoothed over with dramatic WWII propaganda on the covers and sweaty, manic hero yarns within. The typical intense bondage-and-branding cover shows the Timely staff firing on all cylinders and boasts both our titular hero and his teenage sidekick fearlessly swooping in on massively grotesque baddies.

WWII cover; Hitler app.
The early days of WWII were a frightening and tumultuous time, with the American people stiffening their spines and showing a brave front to the world, but inwardly full of doubt, fear, panic, and rage, with the war coming hot on the heels of a depression that seemed to grind on interminably. The frenetic, almost psychotic mood of the time exploded into the culture via anarchic humor, hyperpatriotic fervor, and, in comics, especially, a bloodthirsty hunger for more and more jingoistic derring do. Timely was in the forefront of this movement, with the covers of Captain America reaching a feverish level of ultra-violence and nearly panicked energy by early 1943. Among the most violent and hysterical of WWII covers, comics fans go nuts for these rare treasures, especially jarring and startling in our modern, PC era.

Simon & Kirby cover/art (12/41)
The creators of Captain America Comics were never ones to shy away from controversial topics, as was evinced on the cover of issue #1 of the series, Nazis being a favorite whipping boy, but other hate groups such as the American Bund, and in this issue, they seemingly take aim at the Ku Klux Klan, in the form of the villain, the White Death, who dons the familiar robe and hood while dispensing with his nefarious deeds. The not-so-subtle way Cap Comics dealt with the horrors of the times loomed large in the American psyche and helped pull the country through one of its most-tumultuous times. The typically thrilling Kirby cover is another in a long line of iconic illustrations from this historic series.

classic WWII Hitler bondage cover by Simon; Kirby art
Silly Adolf, will you ever learn? Fresh off his jaw-crushing debut cover, Cap gets another crack at the furious Fuhrer, this time, with a shield to his sour puss. Timely comics have, over the years, shoved their way to the front of the line for vintage comic collectors. Knowledgeable auction hounds have been aware of the scarcity, value, and cultural significance of these amazing books for decades. With the tremendous success of Marvel's movie franchise and the explosion of interest in Golden Age comics in general, these punchy, fearless books have gained newfound respect and demand in today's auction market. Captain America is the runaway favorite for Timely fanatics, his patriotic and feverish covers are jam-packed with action, vintage WWII imagery and fierce imagination.

Kirby hanging/bondage cover; hanging panels (9/41)
Bucky in bondage. Check. Hangman's noose. Check. Nazis. Check. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby kept the potion flowing with the perfect formula that churned out timeless covers time and again. It's likely that the constant drumbeat of anti-Axis sentiment put forth by Kirby and his contemporaries in the darkening days of the late 30s and early 40s had as much to do with America's eventual acceptance of its role in the unfolding conflicts engulfing the globe as the shocking attack on Pearl Harbor. This issue features the Captain America adventures; "The Camera Fiend and his Darts of Doom", "Meet the Fang, Arch-Fiend of the Orient", "The Hangman", and "Trap for a Traitor".

classic "Remember Pearl Harbor" Japanese WWII cover
Pearl Harbor was an event that altered the course of human history, it was the first time Americans had been attacked on their home soil, and it led to the US finally jumping into WWII and helping defeat the Axis powers that were attempting to take over the world. It was commonplace in propaganda of the time to demonize adversaries with caricatures that would be deemed deeply racist and offensive in the politically correct environment of the modern day, but such tropes were de rigueur during the trying times of the war. This cover by Al Avison continues the tradition of Captain America bashing his country's enemies in the face, and the addition of fangs to his Japanese opponent was sure to dehumanize the enemy and make it easier for people to accept the casualties that were piling up in the Pacific theater. The addition of the "Remember Pearl Harbor" logo on this cover makes this a special collectible both for its relative scarcity and its patriotic fervor.

Welp, Bucky's tied up to something again. This time, though, Cap is facing off against... okay, what exactly are those things and why are they in a cemetery? I can't even. Seriously, though, this is among the nuttiest and coolest of Golden Age Cap covers, with perfectly grisly colors and nicely spotted blacks adding to the gruesome mood of the piece. One assumes that, after fighing off Nazis and Japanese soldiers all the time, Cap would be grateful for the change of pace, but Bucky must be thinking, "what? again?" It's impossible to understate the rarity and demand for Timely Caps, so we won't even try -- be assured this is a tough one to find in any grade.
