classic Human Torch/Sub-Mariner/Capt. America Schomburg cvr
Timely took no chances in promoting their top-line heroes and plugged them into every comic they possibly could, leading to the inevitable anthology all-star-mashup title. With Captain America, Human Torch, and Sub-Mariner under one banner and graced by a classically unrestrained Schomburg cover, this debut issue was an instant success. These popular WWII superheroes acted as a magnet to war-weary readers hungry for excitement. This cover image eventually became an iconic classic, one of the most famous of WWII comics propaganda pieces and a firm favorite of the army of collectors that keep Schomburg's reputation alive.

Much has been said about the influence Schomburg had on his peers and the look of Golden Age comics in general, and this cover is no exception, while the book has obviously been read and enjoyed over the years, the handling has barely affected the frenzied cover illustration. The chromatic scheme still shines through, and the blues, reds, and flesh tones of Timely's Golden Age trio still jolt the senses. This classic assault on Hitler's Berchtesgaden is sure to assume a place of honor amidst some amazing collection once the hammer drops.

classic Schomburg Holocaust cover (4/45)
One of the toughest Caps to find and one of the most graphic covers ever published this issue depicts the Holocaust with Nazis burning Jews alive in ovens. Many of the early comic creators were European Jews and they knew what was happening to their families and friends. They used comic books to spread the word and make people aware of the atrocities that were taking place in Europe.

It is difficult to discuss the merits of a comic book with a cover that overpowers any other aspect of this deeply disturbing subject matter, suffice to say that this issue is rare, desirable at any grade, and this particular copy retains its colors as well as the integrity of the central image featuring Cap and Bucky. This is truly one of the most important comics of the Golden Age, and possibly of the history of the industry, an issue that takes comics out of the realm of make-believe into the harsh realities of the real world.

1st issue; 1st Toro/Sub-Mariner by Everett
The Human Torch was created by writer-artist Carl Burgos He first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 (October 1939), published by Marvel's predecessor, Timely Comics. The "Human" Torch was actually an android created by a scientist. He possessed the ability to surround himself with fire and control flames. In his earliest appearances, he was portrayed as a science fiction monstrosity, but quickly became a hero. Along with Captain America and the Sub-Mariner, the Torch's off-and-on foe, he was one of Timely Comics' three signature characters. Like many superheroes, he fell into obscurity by the 1950s and Marvel recycled his name and powers into a new, unrelated Human Torch, a member of the Fantastic Four, in 1961 (who, among other things, was actually human). Unlike Captain America and the Sub-Mariner, the original Human Torch has had only a small presence in the post-1950s Marvel comic books and is closely associated with the Golden Age.

After the 1st issue of Red Raven, Timely Publications decided to change the name of the title to Human Torch (hence the slightly confusing #2 as #1 Torch numbering system). The Torch's sidekick Toro, along with The Falcon, The Fiery Mask, Mantor the Magician and Microman all make their 1st appearances in this issue. Great art by Human Torch creator Carl Burgos and Sub-Mariner creator Bill Everett grace the pages of this premiere issue. As an added bonus, the origins of the Torch and Sub-Mariner are retold in text.

For Golden Age fans a book like this is a real find. When Carl Burgos created Prof. Phineas Horton's android The Human Torch, and Bill Everett swam the depths of his imagination to give us The Sub-Mariner, few could have guessed the impact they would have for generations to come. This issue features a 40 page Torch story, a Sub-Mariner tale, plus in a text piece the two characters debate who is the better artist: Burgos or Everett.

Human Torch #15 is graced with one of a seemingly endless run of amazing Alex Schomburg covers. This particular issue shows the Torch attempting to rescue an extinguished Toro from a bath of molten metal, while a horde of robed evildoers scampers about in an attempt to thwart his efforts. The stories inside the pages are the sort of gruesome fare that dominated the WWII era, Torch and Toro get their fires put out often and many casualties are racked up, poison, explosions, stampedes, deadly falls, and other pre-code mayhem ensues, all rendered by the talented draftsmen Al Gabriele, Harry Sahle, and Allen Simon.

This copy of Human Torch #15 comes from the Okajima pedigree and is tied for highest graded. Save for some writing on the cover, there are no imperfections visible, the spine is perfect, the colors are vibrant, the corners are keen and the registration is magnificent. You are not likely to come across another example of this classic issue in such amazing condition again, fans of Golden Age Timelys, Alex Schomburg art or the Human Torch, take notice, this is one comic you don't want to let slip away.

classic Schomburg Human Torch/Sub-Mariner WWII swastika/bondage cover (whew)
Marvel Mystery Comics was Timely's most iconic anthology book of the Golden Age, often featuring a classic Schomburg cover starring the Human Torch, Toro, and/or the Namor, Sub-Mariner, and issue #22 is no exception. The cover is typical of Schomburg, intense action in the foreground and all sorts of chaotic mayhem in the background, this image, showing Allied troops floundering around in the sea is reminiscent of the film Dunkirk, with the additonal thrill of a superhero melee. Toss in a back-pages Kirby yarn featuring the GA Vision versus Khor, the Black Sorceror, and you have another classic comic from the wartime hero explosion.

classic Schomburg WWII Superplane cover
Marvel Mystery was typical of the Golden Age of comics in many ways, anthology style, with thrilling WWII cover art, drawn by Alex Schomburg, whose genius seemed to grace every other title of the era, and the recurring star character that would feature in the lead story. The Human Torch was often seen zooming into action on many a cover of the classic title, along with mainstays Sub-Mariner and Angel, this book also contains a GA Vision story, who would go on to inspire the Avenger character in the Silver Age.

The Bob Oskner illustration on this cover presents powerful hues, the reds of the Torch and Toro are glowing, and the deep green tones of the Super Plane are a pleasure to behold. Another great Marvel Mystery issue in this auction, at a grade that makes it available to a greater pool of bidders.

Schomburg bondage cover; 1st app. Blue Blaze, Dynamic Man; rare!
The early Alex Schomburg cover on Mystic Comics #1 hints at the artist's future greatness, which is not to say that this book doesn't have a remarkable cover, the weird group of thugs attacking the Blue Blaze certainly bear the hallmarks of Schomburg's memorable style.

Mystic Comics was an anthology of the kind that dominated spinner racks of the 1940s, all sorts of thrills were in store for the reader, from superhero action to western adventure, and Mystic was one of the best in the business, the comic would eventually spawn the Destroyer, who would become the title's cover star for a time, but this first issue is a real treat for Golden Age collectors.

This book is in good condition, some light shadowing is evident but remains well away from the stunning action on this cover. The colors show no signs of fading, the comic is structurally sound, and the classic cover will pique the interest of Schomburg fans with its awesome ghoulish tableau.

Alex Schomburg bondage cvr
With Harry Chesler studios providing art and stories for a content-hungry Timely Comics, the early issues of Mystic have a mannered, pulpish feel very unlike the house style that would later come to dominate the Timely lineup. Already in place were the over-the-top, manic covers by Alex Schomburg, here only slightly reined in, but still providing a wild, action-packed image replete with fierce villains, a stocky hero, and, of course, a bound-up lady in peril. As Timely had not yet hit on their unique take on the then-new superhero genre, these early issues were slower to catch on with readers, making them extremely rare and very attractive to Timely completists who are fascinated by the rich history of Timely/Marvel.

This cover is in excellent condition considering its 80-year vintage, Dynamic Man's green uniform contrasts perfectly with the lighter tones of the bad guys' robes, which are as bright as the flames they are trying to drop that poor woman into. Some minor chipping around the edges of this comic do little to detract from its overall appeal, another amazing contribution from a rapidly maturing Alex Schomburg will no doubt cause this book to be a popular lot come auction time.

classic Schomburg FDR train assassination cvr; origin & 1st app. GA Black Widow
Mystic Comics published by Timely Comics (later to become Marvel) was another thrilling entry into the imprint's anthology format, the fourth issue, like the three that came before it, featured content culled from Funnies, Inc. or Harry "A" Chesler's studio's publications. The series did not feature any star in particular, but rather went for a "kitchen sink" approach, which was the style at the time. This particular issue has the distinction of featuring a cover by the artist who is generally considered to be the man who defined the look of the Golden Age, Alex Schomburg. The book also bore a strong connection to current events, as one can see, the gigantic Hercules is shown saving President Franklin D. Roosevelt from an assassination attempt.

1st app. The Destroyer; classic Kirby/Schomburg bondage cvr (10/41)
Bought back to life, after a seven-month hiatus, by Joe Simon, Mystic #6 featured a new hero named the Destroyer, a character designed by a young Stan Lee. It is said that the Destroyer was the most popular character Lee would create until he struck gold with the Fantastic Four. The book's cover bears a classic Alex Schomberg image, featuring his tried and true tropes; a flurry of action, Nazis and a swastika, a person bound in rope, all popular and commonly recurring imagery of the Golden Age.

This cover, a collaboration between Schomburg and Kirby, is already an undeniable selling point, as anything from the Golden Age by these two giants of the comic world has inherent value, when you put the two to together, just WOW! This comic is ablaze with a rainbow of color, almost every hue in the spectrum is on display, from the verdant greens to the shocking reds, this book is a feast for the eyes. Another amazing wartime classic from the fine folks at Timely.
