Bob Oksner pencils and inks; image size 10" x 15"
And Death Shall Have No Dominion
The Bob Oksner illustration on the cover of Adventure Comics #420 shows Supergirl wreaking havoc, tossing a mangled cannon through the air as if it were a paper airplane. This dynamic art is typical of Bronze Age DC action, signaling the transition from the humorous and verbose covers of the publisher's Silver Age. Oksner's Bronze Age output allowed him to flex his muscles and show off skills not always employed in his earlier comedy and satire output. The success of the Supergirl TV series has driven interest in the character, and with a fourth season premiering in October of 2018, investing in art related to Kara Zor-El is a no-brainer.

Tom Smith airbrushed acrylics on board and signed over printed blue line; blue line art by John Romita, Sr.; 17" x 11"
Blue lines are an incredible part of the comic book creation process from before the comic world went digital. Blue line is a process where the line art is printed in light blue on board for the colorist to fill in. Tom Smith s colors were created via beautiful airbrush techniques using bold and vibrant colors. An acetate overlay is provided which has the inked artwork printed on it, so when the acetate is placed over the top of the colored artwork, it is a 2 layered complete image that reveals the final artwork. Lineart by John Romita Sr. and colors by Tom Smith. Signed by Tom Smith.

Jim McLaughlin pencils; image size 11" x 16"
Jim McLaughlin was one of the many unsung talents that labored away on comic books to little fanfare during his career, but as can be seen on this striking cover to Baffling Mysteries #13, McLaughlin was a gifted professional, with a sure hand and great eye for design and framing. Comic art from the Golden Age is difficult to come by, and fans of pre-code horror books love to acquire these campy, spooky rarities. It is satisfying that the workaday artists from the Golden Age are being rediscovered and given their due respect through the comic art collecting hobby.

Unknown Artist; image size 10.5" x 15.75"
When hero comics took a nose dive in the post WWII era, genre comics stepped in to fill the void, romance, western and war books were all incredibly popular, but horror comics were in a class all their own, the shocking subject matter and memorable cover designs have made horror books a lasting focus of a loyal and intense collecting community. Although the name of the artist who rendered the cover for Baffling Mysteries #23 is unknown, what is quite obvious is the incredible talent this person wielded, the creepy, face-swapping hag scenario was bound to entice curious readers to want to see what other terrors resided inside this book's pages. Unlike today, comic artists worked in relative obscurity in the Golden Age, and some of their amazing contributions have survived the years to become desirable collectibles for a devoted fan base.

Matt Wagner pencils and inks; image size 10.25" x 16"
Paying an obvious homage to the beloved and iconic cover to Detective Comics #31, this Matt Wagner cover for Batman and the Mad Monk #1 succeeds at capturing the same mood and intensity of the most memorable of all Golden Age Bat covers. The series Batman and the Mad Monk is part of the Year One Batman storyline, and expands on the Golden Age tales that the cover so lovingly tributes. Illustrator Matt Wagner was the creative force behind the cult classic Grendel and worked on Neil Gaiman's Sandman series as well as other projects for DC. This is an impressive piece of Modern Age comic art that references the good old days of yesteryear, masterfully rendered by a skilled artist, this cover is truly the best of both worlds, certain to be a favorite of current day Bat-fans and Golden Age admirers alike.
