Jack Kirby cvr/art; origin and 1st app. X-Men; 1st app. Magneto
Key Comics Collection
Stan Lee once explained that his original title for this series was "The Mutants" but publisher Martin Goodman didn't like the sound of it. Lee, in a stroke of genius, named the newly formed group after its founder, Professor X, and thus the X-Men was born. They were a motley band of outcasts hated and feared by the human world. The title was almost canceled due to lagging sales but was reborn with a new cast of characters in the 70s which went on to make them a perennial favorite ever since. Everybody can relate to what it is like being an outsider, and that is what draws us to the X-Men. With a staggering number of comic spinoffs, blockbuster movies, and a variety of TV shows and cartoons, the popularity of this first issue has proven to be a strong investment in the marketplace.
Careening onto the comics scene, the X-Men achieved immediate popularity with their varied cast and complex themes and that is all introduced perfectly on the cover of the first issue. This 9.2 QES copy encapsulates the bold graphic styling of Kirby's original X-Men run. The minimalist design is a bit different from the typical look of this comic's Silver Age contemporaries. Everyone can find an X-Man (or woman) that they identify with and that's what keeps their popularity and value rising over the years.

Overstreet Guide 2019 NM- (9.2) value = $57,000.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. The Vanisher
Key Comics Collection
Still trying to find the feel and style of the series, in this issue, Lee and Kirby introduce a traditional villain, The Vanisher, meant to plague our teenaged heroes by teleporting and transporting himself with his mutant powers, eventually developing a scheme whereby he holds national secrets hostage, demanding millions of dollars from the US government in an exciting standoff on the lawn of the White House. The use of the mutant hero/villain motif eventually became the backbone of much of the Marvel line, but this charming and telling early issue shows the foundations still being laid for hero greatness to come.

This X-Men # 2 is in positively spectacular condition. QES-certified with pristine cover, edges, and corners, its truly a marvel of comic book collecting.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. the Blob
Key Comics Collection
One of the more stirring aspects of the X-Men's narrative is the confusion some of the mutants face over their self-perception. Are they outcasts of society or overlords of the common man meant to subjugate the lesser species? This topic is addressed early on in the series through the personage of the Blob, a mutant discovered working in a freak show, who is invited to join Professor Xavier's team. Thinking himself superior to the young heroes, The Blob declines and enlists his carnival cronies in an effort to destroy the X-Men and take over the world. It doesn't go well for him, his mind is wiped and he ends up back at the carnival.

This X-Men #3 looks marvelous in all its 9.4 glory, the cover boasts vivid colors and sharp edges. Announcing the infamous Blob's entrance into the Marvel Universe, this copy really is dazzling.

Launching one of the main storylines of the X-Men ouvre, issue #14 introduces Bolivar Trask's creations, the Sentinels, into X-Men lore, and the series would never be the same. Persecution due to their mutant status has been a long-running theme in the X-Men, one which was the main hook that helped the title grow in popularity. Many readers who felt themselves to be outsiders or downtrodden could instantly relate to the otherness of mutantkind, thereby creating a sense of empathy with these special superheroes. This issue is a landmark in the series, and one every true X-Men fan should own. Art by Kirby, Jay Gavin, and Vince Colletta.
