Harvey
VF: 8.0
Mort Meskin pencils and inks on board; logo is stat, with modern background recreation; 14.25" x 22"
In the 1950s superhero comics were all but given up for dead. Horror, romance, and sci-fi books ruled the racks and Harvey Publications, primarily known for their children's titles, wanted in on the action. Alarming Tales was just one of the company's forays into the suspense genre, and this wonderful cover was composed by one of the finest artists from the early days of comics, Mort Meskin. The image of an alien materializing out of a fireball is at once frightening and compelling and is a nifty representation of the science fiction style of the atomic era.

classic Wrightson cvr/art; 1st Swamp Thing; grey-tone cover; one of the most important comics of the Bronze Age!
Considered by many to be THE bronze-age DC key, with a classic greytone cover. Swamp Thing hearkens to a literary theme of man's alienation from his roots in the more halcyon days of the 70's. Comic book fans, just barely out of the decade of love and decadence, found in DC Comic's character an earthy message of spiritual meaning in a contemporary world. One of DC's best covers ever by master Bernie Wrightson.

Kirby cvr/art; Ditko art; origin and 1st app. Thor (8/62)
Melding elements of Norse mythology with the by-now-standard superhero tropes of the funny pages, Stan Lee followed up his Jekyll & Hyde-styled Hulk with this cosmic, high-camp treasure. The book was initially scripted by Stan's brother Larry (to give the overworked and exhausted Lee some breathing room), and pencilled with surprising grace and elegance by Jack Kirby. Another instant favorite, the comic confirmed Lee's Midas touch in the early 1960s as the comic soon became the bedrock for Marvel's more theatrical and grandiose styling. Lee and Kirby stretched mythological legend and armchair philosophy into an epic of a series that slotted in nicely on college campuses already drenched in tweed, deep thoughts, and the occasional cloud of illicit smoke. In recent years, the character has enjoyed yet another renaissance thanks to Marvel's savvy cinematic exploitation, and this debut appearance, already extremely rare thanks to an unusually low print run, has become in even greater demand as a result.

Ditko art; bondage cvr
Well, this doesn't look good. Tired of being defeated directly by the God of Thunder, Loki throws caution to the wind and hijacks the brain and powers of a carnival mentalist to attempt to put down Thor once and for all. As one can imagine, it doesn't succeed, but not for lack of trying, and at least there's some spiffy Ditko art to look at while the expected outcome plays out.

Kirby cvr, Ditko art; Thor verthuth Thor
Bethlehem Copy
The typically awesome cover art by Jack Kirby on this issue encases a tale concerning one Professor Zaxton and his duplication machine. As can be gleaned from the cover, Thor is duplicated by the ne'er-do-well scientist, and has to do battle with his doppleganger, as well as another duplicate, several airplanes, and eventually ends up with a reverse duplicate of the mad scientist, who is now sane and a good guy. The story features the reliable and unique pencils and inks of Marvel long-time mainstay Joe Sinnott, who gets his chance to draw multiple Thors in this action-packed issue.

Colan art
In the time period after the creation of the Comics Code Authority publishers had to obey a set of rules, which had basically defanged the industy. EC and other exploitation imprints were hobbled and the entire comic book business seemed on the brink of extinction. It was at this point that struggling companies like Atlas decided to slyly maneuver around the restrictions of the CCA and put out a glut of somewhat tame horror-themed comics in hopes of capturing the audience who suddenly had nowhere to turn for their cheap thrills. The artists that labored away on these shockers were unwittingly molding the style that would graduate to fruition once the super-hero craze reignited in the Silver Age. Mystery Tales #1 was ground zero for this interesting era, with submissions from Paul Maneely, Gene Colan, and Paul Reinman, this is a solid post-code horror comic classic.

It was these unsung heroes that toiled away in relative obscurity during these low days of the comic industry who were responsible for churning out titles like Mystery Tales for Atlas, as they hung on by their fingernails until their luck would change for the better.
