Harvey
VF: 8.0
Lee Elias pencils, inks and signed; image size 11" x 15.5"; comes matted
Black Cat was an early comic book heroine that appeared in the pages of Harvey Comics from the early 40s to the early 50s, guesting in Pocket Comics, Speed Comics, and All-New Comics, Black Cat was rewarded with her own title in 1946. This book went through several permutations, from Black Cat to Black Cat Western Comics to Black Cat Mystery Comics to Mystery Western back to Western and finally settling on Black Cat Mystic, the fiery redhead was subject to the whims of an ever-shifting comic book landscape, even disappearing from her own title at points. This cover to Black Cat Mystery #30 by Lee Elias manages to combine some of the best elements of the title's strange journey into one bizarre piece of art.

Here we have Linda Turner aka Black Cat, backed up to the edge of a cliff by a menagerie of strange creatures, a fish with a human body and tentacles, a giant, angry bird, and what seems to be a praying mantis with a human head are all rapidly closing in on the titular hero, and Lee Elias' superior talents and fertile imagination make it all seem feasible. Fans of Golden Age curiosities are already lining up to bid on this unique piece of comic book history.

Marvel
VF: 8.0
Pg. 18; Jack Kirby pencils, Chic Stone inks; image size 16" x 22.75"
We sold two early J.I.M pages by Kirby, in auction, collectively for $56K, consider this a bargain!
The King's work on this page from Journey Into Mystery #105 provides a masterclass in composition, done only the way Kirby can. From the cinematic first panel, with Mr. Hyde and the Cobra framed by Thor's muscular legs, to the final panel, where the Thunder God attempts to subdue both of the baddies at the same time, Kirby displays his absolute control over the page, leading the action perfectly, telling the story seamlessly from scene to scene. The underlying plot in this issue concerns the potential romance between Thor's alter-ego, Dr. Donald Blake, and his love interest, Jane Foster, which is slyly inserted into these action panels without skipping a beat. Another great Kirby page from the Marvel Age.

The short-lived series, Detective Eye, was certainly one of the more oddball entries into the Golden Age annals, as the title's protagonist "the Eye" was simply that, a disembodied eye that championed the concept of justice among beings it encountered. It would be difficult to find a more abstract and original hero in any comic from any era, save the Underground Comix of the 60s and 70s. Enjoying cult success in the pages of Keen Detective Funnies, the Eye remains one of the more interesting and esoteric characters in the history of the industry.
Other than the detached cover this book is an 8.0.

Kirby cvr/art; Ditko art; origin and 1st app. Thor (8/62)
Melding elements of Norse mythology with the by-now-standard superhero tropes of the funny pages, Stan Lee followed up his Jekyll & Hyde-style Hulk with this cosmic, high-camp treasure. The book was initially scripted by Stan's brother Larry (to give the overworked and exhausted Lee some breathing room), and penciled with surprising grace and elegance by Jack Kirby. Another instant favorite, the comic confirmed Lee's Midas touch in the early 1960s as the title soon became the bedrock for Marvel's more theatrical and grandiose styling. In recent years, the character has enjoyed yet another renaissance thanks to Marvel's savvy cinematic exploitation, and this debut appearance, already extremely rare thanks to an unusually low print run, has become in even greater demand as a result.

This beautifully preserved 9.0 book exemplifies the perfection of Kirby's Silver Age style. The high-contrast primary color scheme grabs readers with gusto and this copy really captures the initial wonder experienced when the issue hit newsstands so many years ago.

Overstreet Guide 2018 VF/NM (9.0) value = $48,500

Like many of the classic Silver Age Marvel key first appearances, the featured hero (or heroes) stand out in blazing colors from an intentionally drab background, from AF #15 to FF #1, Hulk #1 to Daredevil #1, all these valuable and instantly recognizable books share the common thread of an iconic illustration by Jack Kirby and a background that puts the main focus on the star of the title. Journey into Mystery #83 is no exception, this tried and true method of showcasing a newly minted superhero is on full display on the cover of this impressive VF copy. Thor stands out in all his glory, swinging Mjolnir in an arc of fiery red that mirrors the hues of his cloak, surrounded by subtle grays and greens, the God of Thunder steps into comic history on a sturdy, solid example of this classic collectible, sharp corners and excellent binding complete the package of this popular investment book.

Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko cvr/art; 2nd app. of Loki
Thanks to the recent bombastic Marvel movies, the world at large is now aware of the glory of Loki, one of the most flamboyant and nefarious of Marvel villains, here making his explosive second appearance in this classic issue. All hands were on deck for this issue, as Lee called on both Kirby and Ditko, plus stalwart Don Heck, to make sure this new franchise had the best, most dramatic art possible, to match his unsurprisingly bombastic story. The dynamic cover shows just what Lee was going for here: opera in broad strokes, mythology writ in bright red crayon. The results, of course, were historic, and Marvel had yet another hit on its hands.
