Sheldon Moldoff cvr/art; 1st app. of King Standish
Like Harold Lloyd to Superman's Charlie Chaplin, the Flash was the streamlined, all-American, charismatic response to the dark, adolescent power fantasies represented by the Man of Steel, Batman, and Captain America. Always smiling, always broad-shouldered, and unfailingly charming and eager, Jay Garrick's football-playing science whiz raced effortlessly through adventure after adventure, giving off the can-do spirit that kept America from hitting rock bottom throughout the Depression and subsequent war years. It's interesting to note that, despite the immediate popularity of the character, DC hedged its bets as it had with Action and Detective, rotating Flash's appearances on the covers with backup heroes in attempt to curry favor for these aspiring characters with as many readers as possible. No matter, this just meant readers were treated to exciting genre images from the likes of Shelly Moldoff, whose cover to issue 3 remains a classic even without the Scarlet Speedster.

This 5.0 Flash Comics #3 retains stunning form with its clean edges and well preserved hues. A Golden Age book with such vibrant colors and light pages is a very rare find indeed!

Moldoff art; The Whip cover
This issue's distinct Action #1-ish Whip cover is exciting and charming to this day, although the character has been lost to the ages, his thrilling first appearance still packs a punch. The anthology fare on display inside this book is typical of the times, and although the titular hero, Flash does not star on this cover, he is in the featured story "The Gambling Ship," as well as a Hawkman adventure further in the issue.

This distinctly cartoonish cover is in great shape, very few signs of wear and a bright color scheme highlight the unique appeal of this issue, a definite must-have comic for those fans of Golden Age esoterica.

The King cover
Nova Scotia Copy
Flash Comics was used as a testing ground for DC's new hero ideas, many of which failed to tickle the fancy of readers of the era, but these one-offs and minor players would go on to become objects of interest to collectors who are drawn by the charming conceits of these also-ran heros. Take for example, the King, cover star of Flash Comics #5, relatively obscure to comic fans the character has survived into the Modern Age, proving that even the most minor players in the world of comics have their devoted fan base.

This Nova Scotia copy of Flash Comics #5 is the highest-graded example on the CGC census, which displays bold yellows and deep blue and black hues, the stable construction makes this book a real winner.

Overstreet Guide 2019 NM- (9.2) value = $4,400.

Sheldon Moldoff cvr/art; Shelly's 1st Hawkman cvr
Hawkman was the secondary star in Flash Comics, and this issue showcases the first Shelly Moldoff cover illustration of the winged hero. Although the Flash often played second fiddle on covers of his own book, the character would continue to grow in popularity, the speedy superhero and his fellow JSA member, Hawkman would go on to expanded stardom in the Silver Age, and continue their popularity streak today in DC's Arrowverse.

Despite some chipping along the spine this comic is in admirable condition, the colors remain strong and the classic Moldoff cover design is clean and sharp.

classic Moldoff Flash bondage cover
Flash Comics boasted some of the most distinctive and finely drawn hero covers of the Golden Age, thanks to the skill of artists such as Sheldon Moldoff. His malleable style worked well both for children's cartoon-animal comics and action-packed hero books, and here his fine line and deft sense of drama help create an exciting and eye-catching cover image. Note especially the heft implied by the blacks spotted throughout the water, the motion conveyed by the incoming rush through the grating, and also the sense of urgency created by the Flash's motion lines and forceful pen strokes. A wonderful cover from a true master.

classic Moldoff WWII cover
This wartime cover shows the Flash taking his fleet-footed skills across the pond, as he protects a small, rural home from a WW I style airplane. The speedster replicates his bullet catching trick from the cover of Flash #1, all drawn to kinetic perfection by Shelly Moldoff, the artist who was best known for portaying the motion and fluidity of the Flash in the Golden Age. Johnny Thunder, the Whip, the King, and Hawkman all get in on the action in this anthology gem.

The vivid hues on this cover stretch the four-color printing process to its limits as all of the varying shades and subtle touches bring this Moldoff illustration to life. This is a classic Golden Age cover, one which will be the focus of many Flash fans when this session heats up.

classic Moldoff Hawkman cvr
The cover for Flash Comics #21 shows Hawkman doing battle with a giant alien from Jupiter named Egon, the gorgeous Shelly Moldoff tableau has all of the panache and immediacy that helped move copies in the Golden Age. The Flash would soon be spun off into All-Flash Comics, a book where he would become the sole focus and cover star which is promoted in this very issue. Anthology adventures of the Whip, Johnny Thunder, and the King fill out this book.

Deep blues, bright yellows, saturated purples, and warm grey tones beam off of this cover, which reads as higher than its designated grade, this awesome image exemplifies the reasons collectors go nuts for Golden Age covers.
