Gil Kane motorcycle cover; 1st brief app. Daimon Hellstrom
Nicolas Cage Collection
Ghost Rider's origins began in the Wild West, the original character was an eerie gunslinging horseback rider in his first iteration. Reimagined in the rough-and-tumble era of the 1970s as a motorcycle stuntman, no doubt influenced by the antics of Evel Knievel, Ghost Rider would become an instant cult success. The image of a rebel on a motorbike whose head is a flaming skull could simply not be denied, and the occult and supernatural trappings of his adventures appealed greatly to a public weaned on the grindhouse horrors of the era. This first issue of Ghost Rider capitlaized on Johnny Blaze's success in the "try-out" anthology Marvel Spotlight which was spun off into this memorable and beloved series, spawning several series reboots and motion pictures in the future.

Irwin Hasen WWII tank cvr
Echoing some of the finest Superman covers of the wartime era, the Irwin Hasen illustration that dons Green Lantern #5 is pure Golden Age power. This issue deals with GL and the gang's adventure in the Sahara battling a mysterious foe by the name of the Black Prophet, later on the trail eventually leads back to the Lantern's familiar WWII foe, Captain Kortz, whose evil plans are once again thwarted by our titular hero.

Bright reds and yellows dominate this cover's color scheme, pushing the superhero action to the fore, placing this FN+ copy in the sweet spot of affordability and condition.

Moldoff cvr/Nodell art
Steering the series away from wartime content, and moving in more of a standard anthology direction, Green Lantern #9 serves up a trio of adventures for our hero, and his ever-present sidekick, Doiby Dickles. In the first tale, GL takes on a baddie named the Whistler at a reform school for boys, the second story sees Doiby falling for a female mob boss, and lastly, the Lantern battles three men named Tree, who shed their insecurities and become brave villains when near each other. Also, there's a lot of Mutt & Jeff for those comedy fans out there, a lot of Mutt and Jeff.

Alex Toth cvr/art, Hasen art; Streak the Wonder Dog cvr, last issue!
As is evident on this cover, which features Streak the Wonder Dog prominently, the Green Lantern is not the star of his own book any more, so it is no wonder that this is the final issue of the Golden Age GL run. The wonderful Toth cover art notwithstanding, by the late 40s the superhero comic had taken a massive downturn in popularity and would soon be tossed aside for genre books. But fear not dear reader, by the dawn of the Silver Age the Lantern would be reborn, rebooted, and rekindled for the Atomic Age. Making this an important issue for committed GL fans.

origin retold, 1st app. Guardians of the Universe
After the runaway success of the Flash's reintroduction, DC Publisher Julius Schwartz and his hungry staff of writers and artists hurriedly resuscitated more of their beloved Golden Age favorites. One of the indisputable successes was the reboot of the mystical Green Lantern franchise, featuring a new look by industry favorite Gil Kane. DC was placing all its bets on the new, Atomic-Age breed of heroes, expecting that they would break the company's long dry spell on the stands. Boomer readers were instantly transfixed by the cleverly boyish cover image. In the Silver Age iteration of Green Lantern, Hal Jordan receives his power ring from dying alien Abin Sur, resulting in an audience with the Guardians of the Universe, who deem him worthy to take the place of their fallen charge. Jordan soon heads off to Calor to battle a volcanic monster, thus launching the revamped version of the Green Lantern on his star-bound service in defense of the cosmos.

Neal Adams cvr/art; GL/GA stories begin (4/70)
Green Lantern was on his deathbed and the 60s were to blame. What was fresh and new a decade earlier was old and stale by 1970. Denny O Neil and Neal Adams took a calculated but risky leap by injecting their stories with previously taboo topics. Racism, drug abuse, environmental issues, and the plight of Native Americans were common themes. Dedicated readers were rewarded with some of the highest quality art and scripts the genre had ever known. Adams crafted some of the most dynamic and important art of his career. This was the beginning of a critical run for the creative pair that would brought much-needed respect to the art form. This issue is when comic books started to matter and what would become the direction for many comic book creators in the future.
