1st app. Mr. Freeze (Mr. Zero)
Batman #121 bears the distinction of containing the first appearance of Mr. Zero, aka Mr. Freeze. The name change was made thanks to the campy Batman TV series that took the world by storm in the 1960s, and the character would re-appear, with his new moniker, in Detective Comics #373. He would go on to become one of the Bat's most-popular villains, appearing in cartoons, films, and even video games to spin his tragic tale of love on ice.

origin of the Deacon & Sidekick Mickey, Black Widow app; new costume
Created by, among others, Dondi creator and journeyman artists Irwin Hasen, Catman was publisher Frank Z. Temerson's attempt to cash in on the sudden superhero boom, resulting in a colorful, bright costumed crimefighter whose origin combined elements of Tarzan, Batman, and Captain America in a unique and arresting mix that remains a cult favorite to this day. Possibly the only caped hero of the day paired with a young female sidekick (named Kitten, which, what did you expect), and the only hero team allowed to age somewhat realistically over the years, the team proved rather popular through the war years, which led to this solo book. Although only nominally the Catman's comic -- it was really a continuation of the cancelled Crash Comics with a new title and logo -- this is still a vital and rare first issue. The scarcity of the run in general, due to scattered distribution and WWII paper drives, makes this one of the toughest and most rewarding of hero titles to collect.

Charles Quinlan cvr; bondage splash
Among the rarest and most desired of all Golden Age small-publisher series, Catman is like catnip to rarity hounds: low print runs, small numbers of surviving copies, and delightfully naive and boisterous art. This extremely rare issue boasts what may be one of the most iconic images of the Catman and Kitten, reused often in fanzines and Golden Age retrospectives at the dawn of comic collecting.

not pictured in the Gerber journal; bondage cvr
In 1990, Ernst and Mary Gerber published a labor of love, the Photo Journal of American Comics, in which photos of the cover of every known existing Golden and early Silver Age comic was presented. A handful of issues were so scarce that no copies could be tracked down for imaging, which are now lovingly sought by collectors wanting the very rarest of comic treasures. This issue is among them, a comic remaining in such low numbers that collectors practically fight over the few copies that make it to market, one of the toughest issues to find of a series that is extremely scarce in general, and is a particular favorite of scarcity hounds.

classic WWII Hitler, Tojo, Mussolini cvr
In recent years, WWII covers have grown in demand and popularity. The paper drives of the war effort, combined with the high numbers of copies going overseas to homesick soldiers and the limited print runs necessitated by the stunted economy make these some of the rarest of Golden Age comics, and the demand from both WWII collectors and comics aficianados means that surviving copies never fail to command top dollar in nearly any condition. Among the rarest of the rare is this star-spangled classic, from the already-scarce Catman series, one of the toughest of second-tier GA hero titles to collect. War collectors will note with pleasure that all three of the monstrous Axis leaders are caricatured in this powerful image, as Hitler, Tojo, and Mussolini prove no match for the Continental stable of heroes. While other WWII covers are better known or more celebrated, serious collectors know that this is among the scarcest of the bunch, and a rare treat to see on the marketplace.
