Pg. 17; John Buscema pencils, Steve Leialoha inks; image size 10" x 15"
In the 1970s martial arts were all the rage, Bruce Lee was a box office smash, the David Carradine vehicle "Kung-Fu" was a top-rated TV series, Elvis Presley even got in on the action. Anyone who read Bronze Age comics has fond memories of the plethora of ads for Yubiwaza and Ketsugo, even nunchucks and throwing stars were available via mail order back in the funky decade. It's no mistake that cult favorite Howard the Duck would take on the subject, as the series was known for poking fun at the fads of the time period, and in issue #3 the wisecracking waterfowl would skewer the fervor for hand-to-hand combat, while also providing a straight-faced moral lesson.

Page 17 from this entertaining issue showcases the respected talents of John Buscema and Steve Leialoha as Howard has a deep conversation with a stereotypical wizened master who ticks off every cliche straight out of a Shaw Brothers movie. Buscema's agile pencils combine with Leialoha's inks to create a moody sequence which begins with a kidnapping before presenting a multi-perspective look into the mystical trappings of the teachings of Quack-Fu. Admirers of the kooky kitsch that dominated the pages of Howard the Duck are sure to be meditating on their strategy to bring home this awesome page.

Marvel
VF: 8.0
Pg. 18; Jack Kirby pencils, Chic Stone inks; image size 16" x 22.75"
We sold two early J.I.M pages by Kirby, in auction, collectively for $56K, consider this a bargain!
The King's work on this page from Journey Into Mystery #105 provides a masterclass in composition, done only the way Kirby can. From the cinematic first panel, with Mr. Hyde and the Cobra framed by Thor's muscular legs, to the final panel, where the Thunder God attempts to subdue both of the baddies at the same time, Kirby displays his absolute control over the page, leading the action perfectly, telling the story seamlessly from scene to scene. The underlying plot in this issue concerns the potential romance between Thor's alter-ego, Dr. Donald Blake, and his love interest, Jane Foster, which is slyly inserted into these action panels without skipping a beat. Another great Kirby page from the Marvel Age.

Ken Kelly oil painting; beautifully framed in birchwood, frame value $350; art size 40" x 30" 1992
Few know that fantasy art virtuoso Ken Kelly is actually the nephew of the late Frank Frazetta's wife, Eleanor. While being immersed in his uncle's work, Kelly developed an imaginative and powerful style all his own. Beyond creating the immortal album covers of "Destroyer" and "Love Gun" for KISS, the artist is best known for his captivating work on Conan.

This painting features a deep-sea tableau of a demonic monster bearing down on a pair of attractive scuba divers. Note the sense of weight and scale of this underwater scene, which creates a gauzy, liquid atmosphere without resorting to cliche. This piece is stunning, and proves Kelly to be a true heir to the Frazetta legacy.

Oil. 20" x 15". 2005. Great Vampirella by Ken Kelly. Commission painting
Sly, wry, and vampiric, Forrest Ackerman's infamous creation is brought to full and sultry life in this slick, eye-popping commissioned painting from the great Ken Kelly, whose fantasy and adventure covers graced many of the revered pulp cult magazines. Complete with appropriately macabre setting and lifelike gaze, this is one of the nicest portraits of this irresistible vamp that we've yet seen, with colors that pop, and alarmingly lifelike eyes. You couldn't wish for a more perfect image of Vampirella than this, and Kelly's artistry takes this piece from sexy to sublime.

Ken Kelly oils on board; a Huge 46.5" x 31"; 1995
The cover painting for the novel "Warriors of the Way" by Harry Harrison was rendered with great skill by Ken Kelly. The emotionally charged image of a bellowing barbarian brandishing an axe in preparation for a bloody battle is enough to set anyone's heart pounding. The fine detail on the suit of armor and the prow of the warship are the sort of touches that make Kelly's work stand out from the pack. Taking a cue from his talented uncle, Frank Frazetta, Ken Kelly carves his own niche into the word of fantasy art and proves he has inherited the family gift for creating epic paintings of muscle-bound warriors.

Pg. 14; Jim Starlin pencils, Alex Nino inks; image size 10.5" x 15"
Rampaging Hulk was a large format black and white publication put out by Marvel Comics in the 70s, during the period the imprint had a lot of success with their line of magazines that included adult-themed content, titles like Savage Sword of Conan, Savage Tales, and The Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu joined Rampaging Hulk on stationary store racks around the country until the novelty wore off and many of the titles were canceled in the colorful 80s.

This page from Rampaging Hulk #4 was penciled by the stellar Jim Starlin and inked by the talented Alex Nino, it is a moody page that shows the Hulk and a wizard named Chen K'an as they travel through a desolate landscape towards Tyroc, the Citadel of Terror, where the mage hopes to recover an important artifact. He has imbued the Hulk with some of Bruce Banner's intelligence in order to keep the brute docile for their journey. The foreboding background and magnificent tower are reminiscent of something out of Heavy Metal magazine. A lovely page that should be attractive to Hulk fans and sci-fi devotees alike.
