Fiction House

Eisner/Fine cvr; Kiefer art (1/40)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy

The first comic book devoted exclusively to science fiction, the scrappy genre that grew from the sweaty fever dreams of Victorian fantasists and exploded in the pages of the pulps, to eventually become the major American pop genre, and the modern mythology that continues to captivate the attention of the world. Planet was the four-color inheritor of publisher Fiction House's sci-fi pulps, boasting spectacular covers, soaring storytelling, barrel-chested heroes, and the eye-popping art of most of the period's major illustrative talents. Soaked in mystery, drama, high science, and a generous dose of cheesecake, these majestic works brought the grand scale and brash spirit of sci-fi to a new readership of young and impressionable minds, many of whom, inspired, went on to create their own worlds in galaxies far, far away, and in final frontiers around the universe. It's impossible to stress how important this series was to sci-fi history and a glance at these remarkable covers will seem like a Rosetta Stone for modern science-fiction enthusiasts.

Planet Comics #1 was released as a companion book to Fiction House's Planet Stories pulp novels. The comic features art by legends Will Eisner and Lou Fine as well as Murphy Anderson (under the pen name Leonardo Vinci). The book also features the origin of Auro, Lord of Jupiter and appearances by Flint Baker, Spurt Hammond, and The Red Comet.
The highest-graded (1 of 2) example of Planet #1 in this auction is to die for, with blazing reds, sumptuous greens, lush greys, and glowing yellows in the logo, bearing only the slightest of imperfections, this is an incredibly rare book and there is guaranteed to be a heavyweight slugfest over this Golden Age gem.

classic Lou Fine cvr (2/40)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded
Featuring one in a long run of excellent, racy and thrilling covers, this second issue of Planet Comics picks up where the first left off. The art inside the book is a cut above the standard Golden Age fare, as are the storylines, which show the amazing distillation of the sci-fi genre from Victorian novels into small, digestable chunks, influenced heavily by the pulps that ruled the roost before comics took over the newsstands. Planet Payson, Flint Baker, Tiger Hart and Spurt Hammond all get in on the action in this GA classic!
Being that this is the highest graded copy on the census, and it hails from the vaunted Mile High pedigree, there is not much more to say than it is a beautiful, bright, clean, nearly perfect Golden Age comic book. It goes without saying that any book from the Edgar Church collection is not only going to go up in value, but will also be the subject of intense competition, as will every book in the Planet run in this auction.

Bob Powell art (one pg); Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron begins (4/40)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Fiction House, a former pulp publisher, kept the adventure traditions alive when developing their comics line in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The covers of their periodicals reflected their ability to read their audience perfectly -- energetic imagery, violent action, brash colors; all designed to maximize newsstand attention and draw the eye of even the most jaded of readers. This gloriously insane cover is just one such example, and shows why collectors to this day go bonkers for all the Fiction House lineup. Note, also, the beginning of the Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron strip, an early entry into Fiction House's stable of Good Girl art series which would soon become their bread and butter.

classic early sci-fi cover
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded
Its fitting that Bob Powell cut his teeth on Planet Comics, the first exclusively sci-fi title in comics, as the talented artist later went on to create the pencils for the beloved and iconic "Mars Attacks" card series that inspired the movie by the same name. Here we can see Powell's formidable skills as he creates a thrilling cover scene of space action. Inside the book's pages The Red Comet, Captain Nelson Cole, and Auro, Lord of Jupiter all make appearances in this classic Golden Age sci-fi romp.
The cover on this higest graded example is simply beautiful, considering its seventy eight-year age, it seems to have been kept in suspended animation, the bright yellow background contrasts perfectly with strong reds of the logo. Hailing from the Mile High pedigree this book will go for prices above the Overstreet estimate, owning any book from the Church collection is a dream only a few can claim to have made a reality.

classic Lou Fine Robot cover (9/40)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy

Man, this cover has it all, warrior women, ray-gun wielding heroes, spaceships, and a sinister robot army, its no wonder that Planet Comics was a beloved title in its day, with a loyal following of fans, which has only grown in stature and respect in the modern day. Featuring contributions by John Celardo, Arthur Peddy, Bob Powell and Henry Keifer, issue #8 of Planet is yet another anthology classic, jam packed with spacebound swashbuckling from cover to cover. Fans of Golden Age comics salivate over issues from this run and this book is no exception.
It boggles the mind to take a gander at the Mile High run of Planet Comics, each issue is simply gorgeous, the books are so well preserved you'd think they were forgeries or reprints, but these are the real McCoy, and this copy of issue #8 follows in those revered footsteps. You simply cannot beat an Edgar Church pedigree copy when it comes to the Golden Age of comics, and knowledgable collectors are already planning their strategy to lay their mitts on these amazing Planets.

Edgar Church / Mile High Copy

Giant subterranean drills are a common trope in the armory of villainny, and this cover takes that concept to staggering new heights. The thread that runs through the continuum of early Planet Comics covers is the sci-fi tech and the bright, vibrant color designs, which was guaranteed to make the title stand out on spinner racks and newsstands back in the day. This particular issue of Planet Comics features stories starring cover hero Flint Baker, The Red Comet and "Crash" Parker, just to name a few. Art is contibuted by Golden Age stalwarts George Tuska, Henry Kiefer, Charles Sultan and Gene Fawcette.
Being the highest graded book on the CGC census is a true honor, and that honor has been bestowed on the Edgar Church/Mile High pedigree more often than any other, this copy of Planet Comics #9 is newsstand fresh, looking as perfect as a modern day book that has just been delivered to your local comic store. There is no down side to owning any Mile High comic, they have been known to sell at multiples of guide and are always trending upwards, making them a very smart investment indeed.

Eisner, Briefer art! classic cvr (1/41)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy

The Dan Zolnerowich cover of Planet Comics #10 is a classic of the Golden Age, the mayhem packed into the scene is reminscent of the chaotic designs of Alex Schomburg. Planet was known as one of the earleist purveyors of what is now identified as Good Girl Art, and on this cover you get two ladies for the price of admission. Zolnerowich was another of the talented artists to come out of the Eisner/Iger studios, and his work on Planet is now the stuff of legend. Packed to the brim with sci-fi anthology tales of derring-do, this is another book from the great Golden Age run of Planet Comics.
Stunning, glowing, pristine, these are just a few words that can describe the condition of this book, which stands alone at the top of the CGC census, and of course, it hails from the world-beating Mile High pedigree. This comic, like all the other Planets in this auction is due for a knock down/drag out competition once the auction begins, get in the fray!

Edgar Church / Mile High Copy

One of the most iconic covers of Planet Comics' run is issue #11, although there is some dispute as to the artist who rendered this memorable image, one thing is for sure, it is hard to forget the giant, green space creature that dominates the action, and the bright yellow background that was a popular motif on early Planet covers as well. The Red Comet feature inside the book is the inspiration for the fantastic cover, titled "The Giant Killer of Jupiter," along other anthology punch ups "The Tyrant of Jupiter's Moon" and "Revolt of the Robots" Planet #11 really delivers those GA goods in spades.
Only the slightest amount of tanning on the edges of this book keeps it from attaining perfection, there is no other example of this comic in better condition known to man, and we'd bet you would like to be the owner of those bragging rights. It is well known in the collecting community that Edgar Church pedigree copies are the gold standard against which all other Golden Age comics are compared, and mostly fall disappointingly short, just owning one Mile High book puts you in a collecting class of the elite.

This cover bears your typical "space vampire tossing a damsel in distress into a pit with a tentacled beaked crococile creature while a spaceman fires a ray gun at them" design, which had become a bit old hat by this point, but of course, I jest, this is yet another explosively exciting entry into an unbroken run of amazing covers on this beloved Golden Age sci-fi jewel. Dan Zolernowich was really hitting his stride by issue #15 of Planet, and the familiar stunning yellow backdrop amplifies this crazed cover design. Reef Ryan is the cover hero here, and he is joined by Mars, God of War, Norge Benson and the reliable Flint Baker inside this comic's pages.
While this copy of Planet Comics #15 is not the highest graded, it is still in unbelievable condition, Mile High copies are always breathtaking, and never fail to turn heads at our offices, they simply stand apart from other books, even at the same grade. There is just something magical about the Church pedigree and this copy of Planet #15 has that elusive spark collectors live for. We expect every book in this run to set a new record, and this copy will be right in the thick of the action.
