It was no accident that Siegel and Shuster gave their hero an alter ego of an earnest reporter. In the cynical, depression-battered days of the late 1930s, it was assumed that anyone running a big business or holding a position of authority was somehow running a racket, and the only ones who could expose their chicanery were the hard-bitten newsmen who turned the morning edition into a megaphone for the forgotten man. Thus, early Supes tales such as these pit our intrepid Kryptonian not against mad scientists or alien menaces, but against the money men, corporate fatcats, and corrupt politicians that dead-broke comics readers assumed were responsible for everything that had gone rotten in America. This issue features one of the last non-Superman covers, another gorgeous pulp-derived beauty from the great Fred Guardineer.

Early Detective Comics are rare, and they are brutal, filled with the kind of pulp tales that defined the term, the stories are straight and to the point. This issue opens with the tale of a mad scientist who places a human brain in a gorilla's head for no particular reason, the ensuing rampage is doubtless the inspiration for the moody Creig Flessel cover art on this classic. The anthology insanity continues through out the book, stuffed to the brim with the pre-Batman tales that defined the fledgeling series. Speed Saunders, Larry Steele, Cosmo, the Phantom of Disguise, Bruce Nelson and Slam Bradley all make appearances, just to name a few.

From February 1939. Pre-Batman 'Tecs are among the caviar books of the Golden Age -- and this is one of the scarcest issues, with an infamous conterfeiting cover and typically dark, evocative art within. Pre-Batman issues are even scarcer than the Year One Bat appearances, if you can believe that -- and their moody, grim stories and atmospheric graphics continue to weave a spell over collectors even today.

Like Harold Lloyd to Superman's Charlie Chaplin, the Flash was the streamlined, all-American, charismatic response to the dark, adolescent power fantasies represented by the Man of Steel, Batman, and Captain America. Always smiling, always broad-shouldered, and unfailingly charming and eager, Jay Garrick's football-playing science whiz raced effortlessly through adventure after adventure, giving off the can-do spirit that kept America from hitting rock bottom throughout the Depression and subsequent war years. It's interesting to note that, despite the immediate popularity of the character, DC hedged its bets as it had with Action and Detective, rotating Flash's appearances on the covers with backup heroes in attempt to curry favor for these aspiring characters with as many readers as possible. No matter, this just meant readers were treated to exciting genre images from the likes of Shelly Moldoff, whose cover to issue 3 remains a classic even without the Scarlet Speedster.
