Ditko cvr/art; origin retold; 1st Chameleon; 1st J. Jonah Jameson; Fantastic Four cover (3/63)
Where previous heroes had their origin stories based in spectacular events, dramatic twists, and high tragedy, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko firmly planted their flagship character's feet in the hard ground of daily life in the big city. Shy, insecure, lower-class teen, Peter Parker, drawn to scrawny imperfection by Ditko, transforms into a freakish, wise-cracking daredevil, tortured by guilt over the loss of his father figure, all while scrambling to make a quick buck from his sudden brush with semi-greatness. Spider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 was like nothing anyone had seen before and was an instant success, leading to a hurriedly prepared solo debut issue. Note the use of the Fantastic Four on the cover as insurance, as their group exploits were Marvel's one real box-office draw at the time, and the hungry, ambitious Lee was taking no chances. One of the most important comics of the Silver Age, and the book that proved the Marvel Age of comics was no fluke.
This example, in 9.4 condition, has had some small amount of restoration, making it even more affordable. Especially these days when the stigma of restored comics has taken a back seat to owning a piece of history. High grade means high value.

Overstreet Guide 2017 NM- (9.2) value = $68,000.

This copy has fabulous colors, a tight spine, and it's a mighty fine investment at that too!

Enter Sandman! Following in the footsteps of the first appearance of Doc Ock in issue 3, Amazing Spider-Man 4 added Sandman to the rapidly growing pantheon of the Web-head's enemies. The comic also features the first incident of puny Parker's unmasking during a pitched battle, which causes him to flee from the granular baddie. Sandman is eventually thwarted through the use of an industrial vacuum cleaner. A true classic we are pleased to present to our customers, this is a beautiful and newsstand-bright copy of a beloved, Ditko era, early Spidey comic.

Ditko cvr/art; Kirby art; robot story
In the debut issue of Spiderman, Lee and company hedged their bets by placing the Fantastic Four front and center to attract new readers to an unproven title. What a difference a year makes, when the new megastar on the block relegates the veteran Torch to guest-star status. The comic boasts a classic cover that appealed directly to the new youth market, which was already influencing pop culture with their hard-earned allowance money.

Ditko cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Electro (2/64)
Spider-Man has some of the best antagonists! Electro, for example, who was leeching off the city's electrical grid and robbed the Forest Hills Bank, defeated Spider-Man. To make matters worse, the Daily Bugle accuses ol' Webhead of Electro's misdeeds. Oh the ignominy! After a quick origin reveal, Electro breaks some new muscle out of the local house of detention. Spider-Man makes the scene, proving to J. Jonah Jameson that he and Electro are different people. With the help of rubber gloves and boots, Spidey defeats his nemesis and unmasks him. Electro never quite had the staying power of Doc Ock, but went on to become a regular member of his Sinister Six.

Ditko/Kirby cover; 1st app. the Big Man & the Enforcers (3/64)
The Amazing Spider-Man has been deeply rooted in American pop culture for nearly sixty years and will be a part of superhero mythology for many, many more to come. Stan Lee's gift was an ability to get a kid on a stoop, who may have just spent his last dime, to identify with the larger-than-life and out-of-this world heroes he created. Peter Parker is a teenager from Queens, New York that has all the same problems teens have today; from homework to pimples to bullies to girls, but with the added pressure of being a superhero and all of the extra responsibilities that entails. When Spidey isn't battling a deranged supervillain, he gets to take a bit of a break with the local garden-variety criminals such as the group of bad guys in Amazing Spider-Man #10, the Enforcers.

Ditko cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Mysterio
If you're going to do a hero book with Steve Ditko you may as well go for broke and throw him the most unusual and imaginative villains you can. Thus, Mysterio! You can feel everything falling into place by this point, as the Lee/Ditko machine fires on all cylinders. Even the cover seems more confident, more willing to experiment, more flush with ideas, than ever before. Note also the classic hucksterism along the bottom of the cover, with Marvel happily bragging about its stark break with past conventions, as more and more readers turn on to the Marvel Age of comics.
