Ditko cvr/art; origin retold; 1st Chameleon; 1st J. Jonah Jameson; Fantastic Four cover (3/63)
Second City Collection
Where previous heroes had their origin stories based in spectacular events, dramatic twists, and high tragedy, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko firmly planted their flagship character's feet in the hard ground of daily life in the big city. Shy, insecure, lower-class teen, Peter Parker, drawn to scrawny imperfection by Ditko, transforms into a freakish, wise-cracking daredevil, tortured by guilt over the loss of his father figure, all while scrambling to make a quick buck from his sudden brush with semi-greatness. Spider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 was like nothing anyone had seen before and was an instant success, leading to a hurriedly prepared solo debut issue. Note the use of the Fantastic Four on the cover as insurance, as their group exploits were Marvel's one real box-office draw at the time, and the hungry, ambitious Lee was taking no chances. One of the most important comics of the Silver Age, and the book that proved the Marvel Age of comics was no fluke.

1st app. Vulture; 1st app. the Tinkerer
Second City Collection
It's telling that in the first appearances of their new creation, Lee and Ditko played it largely straight, setting up their teen hero against the troubles of city life and garden-variety thugs, peppered with a bet-hedging cover appearance by the Fantastic Four. By this point, though, they clearly knew they were on to something, and so this initial attempt to expand the webhead's world to include super-villains began with the villainous Vulture, an odd but somehow appropriate nemesis for the new hero. This is also the first truly classic cover of the series, with Ditko's nightmarish visuals allowed to flower in full, backed by an aggressive red-based color scheme that hadn't been tried on Marvel's books to that point.

Ditko cvr/art; 1st app. Doctor Octopus (7/63)
Second City Collection
Every great hero needs a great villain, and while the Vulture, who appeared in the second issue of this title, is great fun and a fine bad guy, he isn't quite the showstopper that Spidey needed to solidify his place in hero history. Enter Doctor Octopus, one of the wildest, most inspired, and most enduring of all the rogues' gallery that the fevered Lee-Ditko hive mind ever cooked up. In keeping with the Marvel theme of misunderstood loners and accidental heroes and villains, tortured genius Otto Octavius finds himself turned into a monster when his experiments in radiation lead to a bizarre apparatus being fused to his body, making him a multi-armed and demented foil for our increasingly beleaguered web-head. Illustrated with Ditko's typically feverish, imaginative panache, and liberally applied with plenty of high-melodrama Lee dialogue, the first appearance of Doc Ock proved a knockout, and gave Spider-Man his first truly iconic foe.

Ditko cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Sandman; 1st app. Betty Brant
Second City Collection
Enter Sandman! Following in the footsteps of the first appearance of Doc Ock in issue 3, Amazing Spider-Man 4 added Sandman to the rapidly growing pantheon of the Web-head's enemies. The comic also features the first incident of puny Parker's unmasking during a pitched battle, which causes him to flee from the granular baddie. Sandman is eventually thwarted through the use of an industrial vacuum cleaner. A true classic we are pleased to present to our customers, this is a beautiful and newsstand-bright copy of a beloved, Ditko era, early Spidey comic.

In the debut issue of Spiderman, Lee and company hedged their bets by placing the Fantastic Four front and center to attract new readers to an unproven title. What a difference a year makes, when the new megastar on the block relegates the veteran Torch to guest-star status. The comic boasts a classic cover that appealed directly to the new youth market, which was already influencing pop culture with their hard-earned allowance money.

Second City Collection
The Amazing Spider-Man has been deeply rooted in American pop culture for nearly sixty years and will be a part of superhero mythology for many, many more to come. Stan Lee's gift was an ability to get a kid on a stoop, who may have just spent his last dime, to identify with the larger-than-life and out-of-this world heroes he created. Peter Parker is a teenager from Queens, New York that has all the same problems teens have today; from homework to pimples to bullies to girls, but with the added pressure of being a superhero and all of the extra responsibilities that entails. When Spidey isn't battling a deranged supervillain, he gets to take a bit of a break with the local garden-variety criminals such as the group of bad guys in Amazing Spider-Man #10, the Enforcers.
