Kirby cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Fantastic Four; 1st Mole Man; the Marvel Age begins here
Inspired by DC's top-selling smorgasbord of heroes, the Justice League of America, Stan Lee, and Jack Kirby decided to go one better when tasked with creating a copycat title for Marvel. Instead of a mashup of existing heroes, Lee and Kirby struck upon the novel concept of creating a super-family, allowing young readers to instantly identify with the day-to-day squabbles and growing pains of the protagonists while still enjoying liberal doses of heroism and derring-do. This dynamic and historic first issue hit the ground running with an action-packed cover and one of the most thrilling and engrossing origin stories of the era. Fox Studios has made sure to keep their rights to the Fantastic Four properties so expect another silver screen reboot in the coming years. Hopefully the third time will be the charm! Silver Age Marvel keys like this one are always in high demand and there is no sign of abatement anytime soon.
We almost NEVER see copies this nice and this one's a beauty. Deep greens, crisp reds, and rich blacks, an overall splendid copy with amazing eye appeal. For a VF, this is one of the nicest-looking Marvel SA keys we've ever had the pleasure of carrying. Except for some light tanning and mild perimeter wear, this copy is in extraordinary condition, bright and clean. Are you ready? The frenzy for this issue begins once again.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. of the Skrulls; 2nd Fantastic Four
Who knew that the need for a faddish, sci-fi based villain would result in storylines and mythology spanning across decades? It wasn't as though Lee and Kirby were consciously creating a pop-culture world in the rocky days of early Silver Age Marvel, they were just trying to make fun comics that would sell and attract readers -- but, by following the hyperactive lead of their imaginative audience, they developed a language and style and mythos that carries on to this day, to the movies and beyond. This first appearance of the Skrulls hints at the grandeur and go-for-broke glee of the Marvel Universe to come. A 9.6 copy of Fantastic Four 2? The first appearance of the Skrulls? A classic cover illustration by Jack Kirby? Signed by one Mr. Stan Lee? What are you waiting for? This book is just screaming to be picked up and bought home and placed within the collection of some lucky Fantastic Four fan and marveled at for years to come. Just wait until the franchise is properly rebooted on the silver screen and watch the value skyrocket.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st costumes & established HQ
This is not the first issue of the Fantastic Four, but it is an issue filled to the brim with firsts. This issue marks the first appearance of the FF's costumes, which can turn invisible, stretch to incredible lengths, resist powerful flames, and allow Ben Grimm a relaxing day at the beach. This issue also debuts the location of the super-team's headquarters, the design of their Fantasti-car, and even features the first time Stan Lee refers to the series as "The Greatest Comic Magazine in the World". Notably, this issue is also the first to feature an FF fan mail section, the first step in Lee's creation of the Mighty Marvel Fan Base. The vintage Jack Kirby cover design uses the sharp, stark grays of the New York City skyline to highlight the bright reds of Johnny Blaze's flames and the pristine white of the brand new Fantasti-car.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st SA Sub-Mariner
In the spirit of recycling, both DC and Marvel dusted off and rethought their classic Golden Age characters in the rough-and-tumble marketplace of the early Silver Age, including one of the most intriguing and unusual of all Timely creations, the fearsome Sub-Mariner. While the Golden Age Namor was a pulpy, tortured anti-hero, the Silver Age Namor was more aggressively antagonistic, with his antipathy the FF exacerbated by his longing for the fetching Sue Storm. In this first Silver Age appearance of this distinctive character, Lee and Kirby ratchet up the action and drama to a hyperbolic degree, firmly establishing this series as one of the most gloriously inventive of all Silver Age Marvel titles.
The cover features a dramatic Jack Kirby portrait of the first family of superheroes, with Namor as a colorful centerpiece -- an image that evokes the emotional dynamics that have kept the FF going all this time and oddly symbolizes the cold-war tensions of the early 60s. It also brings together two of the colorful characters unveiled at the start of it all in Marvel Comics #1, namely the prototypical versions of Sub-Mariner and Human Torch. This awesome, high-grade copy is a quintessential example of what made Lee and Kirby legends.

Overstreet Guide 2017 NM- (9.2) value = $14,000.

Origin & 1st Dr. Doom; bondage cover (7/62); Dr. Doom Movie Rumors!
Doom, according to Jack "The King" Kirby, was modeled after the Middle Age's envisioning of Death, hence the hood. Kirby claims that Doom, a genius inventor, sorcerer, and leader of Latveria, is inherently evil. As a result of his facial disfigurement and hatred for Reed Richards, he lashes out against the world in perpetual vengeance. He is one of the greatest and most complex villains ever created in the world of comics and he first appears here in Fantastic Four # 5. Created by the team of Kirby and Stan "The Man" Lee, this character has been copied and imitated many times over the last fifty years, most notably as the inspiration for Darth Vader.
Let's be candid, with this copy, you'll get a beautifully crisp and clean cover, with sharp corners and deep, vivid colors. A veritable feast for the eyes is presented, lush greens, bright yellows, opaque reds, and fiery oranges. One seeking Silver Age Marvel treasures would certainly be keen to bid in this auction.

1st Kurrgo; UFO cvr
n Fantastic Four #7, the seeds that would eventually grow into the inspiration for the X-Men are sown by Kirby and Lee as they weave a tale that highlights the sense of otherness and fear of alienation that the new wave of Marvel superheroes were acutely aware of, as is evinced by the FF's reluctance to attend a dinner in their honor in Washington D.C. Their trepidation is soon validated as their hosts turn on them and they beat a hasty retreat back to the safety of the Baxter building, only to discover they have been unknowingly drafted into preventing a cosmic calamity by the shifty Kurrgo, Master of Planet X. The rest of the story is a real nail-biter of mega, and miniature, proportions all at once.

Much has been said about the impact and legacy the humanistic tales dreamt up by Lee, and fleshed out by Kirby have had on the Silver Age and beyond, and this issue of Fantastic Four is simply brimming with game-changing ideas. Never before had simple comic book characters exuded such gravitas, and expressed so many of the emotions that common mortals experience on a daily basis.
Featuring a classic cover illustration that melds atomic-age imagery with Universal Horror tropes, this incandescent, high-grade copy of FF #7 is sure to be a big hit in this auction, simply a wonderful collectible piece and a sound investment all rolled into one.

Kirby cvr/art; 3rd SA Sub-Mariner app.
It's typical of the hard-bitten, cynical world of Silver Age Marvel to show the heroes right on the cover of their own book being turned out of their digs and jeered by crowds. It's also a sign of the clever way Stan Lee and Jack Kirby could turn everyday drabness into imaginative gold, almost as though they were thinking big by going small. It had certainly had never been tried before, so readers were turned on by the originality and audacity of Marvel's ideas, and stuck around for the strong storytelling and attention-grabbing art. This is only the third appearance of the Sub-Mariner in the Silver Age, and Lee and Kirby have already transformed him completely from a brooding romantic demigod into a snarling, almost completely adversarial despot. Readers loved it.

Kirby cvr/art; Lee & Kirby appear in story; Dr. Doom app.
By the time of this issue's appearance, Stan Lee's plan to remake the struggling Marvel into an industry powerhouse was gaining steam and support. Part of the reason for this success was his willingness to treat the Marvel bullpen as stars in their own right, culminating in this clever and beloved issue in which Lee and Kirby guest star in their own popular comic. It was both a winking in-joke meant to appeal to regular readers, and an unmistakable gauntlet thrown down to competitors that Marvel had arrived.

origin & 1st app. of Impossible Man; FF origin retold
One of the first indicators that Lee and Kirby were pushing the FF book beyond the boundaries of standard hero comics was the appearance of the Impossible Man, a character intended largely as a comic foil and prankster. With the wry tone and increasingly bizarre style of the book already established, this flight of fancy allowed the bullpen boatloads of creative freedom for their next groundbreaking FF epics.

In addition, Lee and Kirby once again upped the ante on strange goings-on by introducing the Watcher, one of the most intriguing meta-creations of the Marvel Silver Age, whose influence over the series' galactic ambitions would only increase as time went on and would lead directly to the legendary Galactus /Surfer saga of later years.
