Pg. 9; Jack Kirby pencils, Frank Giacoia inks, 12" x 18.5"
In issue #39 of the Fantastic Four, the hero team finds themselves at a major disadvantage, having been stripped of their powers by a "Q-Bomb" explosion. Meanwhile in Latveria, Doctor Doom is discovering he was hypnotized to believe he had defeated the FF, and as a result, had stopped pursuing them. This classic Jack Kirby page contains not only some thrilling Doom panels, and one of the King's kooky machines, but also manages to throw in Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, for good measure. There's so much happening on this page, even the production notes add an interesting extra feature to this overloaded piece of Silver Age history. According to our sources, Frank Giacoia was made to wait outside Stan Lee's office as Wally Wood inked the Daredevil and Matt Murdoch appearances in this issue before handing them over to Giacoia, which means that this page could very well be a Kirby / Wood collaboration, making this special piece all the more of a Marvel collector's dream.

Kirby's run on the Fantastic Four set the stage for the Marvel Age, his collaborations with Stan Lee are now the stuff of legend, and owning a small piece of that legacy is an opportunity many can only dream of. The proposed purchase of Fox Entertainment by Disney would bring a good chunk of Marvel's properties back into the MCU fold, so all things concerning the beloved superhero family are expected to perk up with a reboot looming in the near future. And, of course, any chance to own a piece of Jack Kirby art is nothing to scoff at either.

Pg. 10; Jack Kirby pencils, Vince Colletta inks; 12" x 18.5"
Talk about action-packed panels! This page is pure Jack Kirby; forceful, kinetic, psychedelic, and chock-full of all the personal tics and touches that made Kirby the single most-revered artist in the comic form. His dramatic use of perspective and foreshortening creates a sense of danger, and his use of motion lines and other tried-and-true comic book flourishes highlights the important action taking place in these panels.

The storyline in FF #43 concerns Reed Richards' attempts to restore Ben Grimm's personality after he had been brainwashed by the Frightful Four, but the experiment goes haywire, causing an explosion that exposes Mr. Fantastic and the Thing to deadly Gamma Rays. It is only the quick thinking of Sue Richards that saves the day and allows the Thing to return to his ever-lovin' blue-eyed self. If you are a fan of Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four, Silver Age Marvel or any combination of these elements, how can you possibly resist the power of this awesome page? This is Kirby at the top of his form, reveling in his heyday, churning out incredible pieces of art for several different groundbreaking titles daily, and in doing so, shaping the history and narrative of the comic art form.

Pg. 30; John Byrne pencils, Joe Sinnott inks; 11" x 17"
Canadian artist John Byrne burst on to the scene with a powerful impact on Bronze Age comic book art, which is still felt today. Working his way up through the ranks at B-level publisher Charlton, Byrne quickly landed a position at Marvel, where he would go on to revolutionize the X-Men franchise, turning Wolverine and Dark Phoenix into two of the most beloved characters in the history of the publishing house. Before taking over Fantastic Four for a five-year run, Byrne would do spot work on the title whenever called upon. This half-splash comes from his very first work on the franchise and stands as a precursor of great things to come.

Fantastic Four #209 is a memorable issue for several reasons. Not only is it the first time Byrne tackled "the World's Greatest Comic Magazine," but it also presented the first comic book appearance of the team's newest member, the oft-maligned HERBIE. Luckily all thoughts of gimmicky robots are wiped away in one fell swoop by the Devourer of Worlds, Galactus, in what may be Byrne's first depiction of the cosmic threat. Overall this is an important, historical, and collectible piece of comic art, which sees one of the great illustrators embarking on a long journey with some of Marvel's most popular heroes.

Pg. 9; Jack Kirby pencils, Chic Stone inks; 12.5" x 18.5"
Marvel gained its reputation by creating recognizable, human heroes with quirks and neuroses, and the impressive feat achieved by Lee and Kirby in FF was the creation of a real family, four deeply bonded individuals who love and annoy one another in equal measure. The Fantastic Four stood out from the pack immediately upon its debut because of the strong characterization. Some of Kirby's best and most-heartfelt work was done on this book, as is evidenced by this remarkable page, which leans heavily on body language and facial expression to give our heroes depth and distinctiveness. Where other artists may have relied on flashy angles, exaggerated action, and false drama to develop this story, Kirby gives his cast a chance to breathe and even manages to get some expressiveness into a giant dude made of rock. It's these quieter moments that are toughest to achieve, and Kirby absolutely nails it.

Early Silver Age Marvel art is far and away the most requested by collectors, and this stunning masterpiece of comic storytelling boasts all four members of the classic FF lineup. There is always a huge amount of interest whenever a classic Kirby page goes up for auction, and we expect this piece to generate a decent amount of heat come hammer time.

If you are a new customer planning to make a first-time purchase over $25,000, please contact us 24 hours in advance of the item closing at 212.895.3999 or support@comicconnect.com so that we may approve your account for bidding. PGX NM-: 9.2
white pgs; Stan Lee Signature Series
Kirby cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Fantastic Four; 1st Mole Man; the Marvel Age begins here (11/61)
Inspired by DC's top-selling smorgasbord of heroes, the Justice League of America, Stan Lee, and Jack Kirby decided to go one better when tasked with creating a copycat title for Marvel. Instead of a mashup of existing heroes, Lee and Kirby struck upon the novel concept of creating a super-family, allowing young readers to instantly identify with the day-to-day squabbles and growing pains of the protagonists while still enjoying liberal doses of heroism and derring-do. This dynamic and historic first issue hit the ground running with an action-packed cover and one of the most thrilling and engrossing origin stories of the era. Disney's purchase of Fox Studios has given Marvel back their rights to the Fantastic Four properties so expect another silver screen reboot in the MCU in the coming years. Hopefully the third time will be the charm! Silver Age Marvel keys like this one are always in high demand and there is no sign of abatement anytime soon.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. of the Skrulls; 2nd Fantastic Four
Who knew that the need for a faddish, sci-fi based villain would result in storylines and mythology spanning across decades? It wasn't as though Lee and Kirby were consciously creating a pop-culture world in the rocky days of early Silver Age Marvel, they were just trying to make fun comics that would sell and attract readers -- but, by following the hyperactive lead of their imaginative audience, they developed a language and style and mythos that carries on to this day, to the movies and beyond. This first appearance of the Skrulls hints at the grandeur and go-for-broke glee of the Marvel Universe to come. A 9.6 copy of Fantastic Four 2? The first appearance of the Skrulls? A classic cover illustration by Jack Kirby? Signed by one Mr. Stan Lee? What are you waiting for? This book is just screaming to be picked up and bought home and placed within the collection of some lucky Fantastic Four fan and marveled at for years to come. Just wait until the franchise is properly rebooted on the silver screen and watch the value skyrocket.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st costumes & established HQ
This is not the first issue of the Fantastic Four, but it is an issue filled to the brim with firsts. This issue marks the first appearance of the FF's costumes, which can turn invisible, stretch to incredible lengths, resist powerful flames, and allow Ben Grimm a relaxing day at the beach. This issue also debuts the location of the super-team's headquarters, the design of their Fantasti-car, and even features the first time Stan Lee refers to the series as "The Greatest Comic Magazine in the World". Notably, this issue is also the first to feature an FF fan mail section, the first step in Lee's creation of the Mighty Marvel Fan Base. The vintage Jack Kirby cover design uses the sharp, stark grays of the New York City skyline to highlight the bright reds of Johnny Blaze's flames and the pristine white of the brand new Fantasti-car.

Origin & 1st Dr. Doom; bondage cover (7/62); Dr. Doom Movie Rumors!
Doom, according to Jack "The King" Kirby, was modeled after the Middle Age's envisioning of Death, hence the hood. Kirby claims that Doom, a genius inventor, sorcerer, and leader of Latveria, is inherently evil. As a result of his facial disfigurement and hatred for Reed Richards, he lashes out against the world in perpetual vengeance. He is one of the greatest and most complex villains ever created in the world of comics and he first appears here in Fantastic Four # 5. Created by the team of Kirby and Stan "The Man" Lee, this character has been copied and imitated many times over the last fifty years, most notably as the inspiration for Darth Vader.

Kirby cvr/art; Lee & Kirby appear in story; Dr. Doom app.
By the time of this issue's appearance, Stan Lee's plan to remake the struggling Marvel into an industry powerhouse was gaining steam and support. Part of the reason for this success was his willingness to treat the Marvel bullpen as stars in their own right, culminating in this clever and beloved issue in which Lee and Kirby guest star in their own popular comic. Kirby cvr/art; 1st Hulk vs Thing battle (3/63)
A match made in adolescent boy heaven, it was only a matter of time before Lee and Kirby took their two most popular creations and set them against each other to see what would happen. The result, unsurprisingly, was a smash success, leading to nearly annual throwdowns between the two misunderstood behemoths. This first contretemps occurred while the nascent Hulk was still in his initial, reasonably intelligent phase, making him an even more formidable opponent for the streetwise scrapping Thing. The reduction of the green goliath in later years to a monosyllabic brute made the recurring battles less and less challenging and more like a standard-issue monster mash, but this classic first meeting still retains its punch and excitement, and fans young and old still feel that special tingle when encountering this classic image.

If you are into shrinking then this is the comic book for you! Featuring microscopic versions of the Fantastic Four, Dr. Doom, a world named Sub-Atomica, and of course, Ant-Man, in his first crossover appearance in the pages of FF, this is one heck of a miniature masterpiece. In short, the FF keeps getting shrunk down by Dr. Doom, whom they eventually encounter causing havok in a tiny kingdom, after being captured they are saved by Ant-Man. Many of the elements of the sub-atomic universe explored in "Ant-Man" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp" are important factors in this issue.

Kirby cvr/art; classic Hulk vs. Thing cover; 2nd SA Captain America app. (cameo)
Never let it be said that Marvel wouldn't give the people what they wanted. It's understandable that young readers would instantly gravitate to the two misshapen beasts starring on this cover. The Hulk is a perfect personification of the uncontrollable rage, emotional turmoil, and alienation felt by any growing boy fighting through hormones and the general pains of childhood, while the Thing appealed to any kid whose own body seemed to be clumsily betraying them through the pains and troubles of growing up. Pit these two beasts against each other and you're guaranteed to sell out on day one, as Marvel happily discovered and continued to exploit throughout the Silver and Bronze Age, almost annually. Here, the showdowns had not yet exhausted their potential, and you can still feel the joy of inventiveness and novelty bursting forth in Kirby's typically epic cover image.
