Kirby cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Fantastic Four; 1st Mole Man; the Marvel Age begins here (11/61)
Inspired by DC's top-selling smorgasbord of heroes, the Justice League of America, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby went one better when creating a copycat title for Marvel. Instead of a mashup of existing heroes, Lee and Kirby struck upon the novel concept of creating a super-family, letting young readers instantly identify with the day-to-day squabbles and growing pains of the protagonists while still enjoying liberal doses of heroism. This dynamic and historic first issue hit the ground running with an action-packed cover and one of the most thrilling and engrossing origin stories of the era. Disney's purchase of Fox Studios has given Marvel back their rights to the Fantastic Four properties so expect another silver screen reboot in the MCU in the coming years, we are certain that the third time will be a charm. Silver Age Marvel keys like this one are always in high demand and there is no sign of letting up soon.
There's no mistaking Kirby's iconic style, as the 60s ushered in a new era of arts and entertainment, so followed the Fantastic Four. This glorious 8.0 copy features the fabulous fighting family, clear as day, in exceptionally well-preserved form with hot, saturated hues, extra crisp and clean, with razor-like corners and solid borders.

Overstreet Guide 2019 VF (8.0) value = $40,000.

This FN+ copy of a milestone comic, one which looms large in the Marvel Age, is in a very respectable state of preservation, the white background is clean and shiny, the interior pages are white, and the overall presentation is bright and crisp. This issue bears iconic imagery that Kirby sent spinning off into comic book mythology. Get this book before the MCU reboot or you'll wish you did.

Thanks to a restoration regimen, this copy of FF#1 had been given a new lease on life, boasting bright colors, clean whites, and a solid appearance, there is no evidence that this copy has been rejuvenated, save for the label. Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. of the Skrulls; 2nd Fantastic Four
Who knew that the need for a faddish, sci-fi based villain would result in storylines and mythology spanning across decades? It wasn't as though Lee and Kirby were consciously creating a pop-culture world in the rocky days of early Silver Age Marvel, they were just trying to make fun comics that would sell and attract readers -- but, by following the hyperactive lead of their imaginative audience, they developed a language and style and mythos that carries on to this day, to the movies and beyond. This first appearance of the Skrulls hints at the grandeur and go-for-broke glee of the Marvel Universe to come.

Kirby cover/art; 1st costumes & established HQ
This is not the first issue of the Fantastic Four, but it is an issue filled to the brim with firsts. This issue marks the first appearance of the FF's costumes, which can turn invisible, stretch to incredible lengths, resist powerful flames, and allow Ben Grimm a relaxing day at the beach. This issue also debuts the location of the super-team's headquarters, the design of their Fantasti-car, and even features the first time Stan Lee refers to the series as "The Greatest Comic Magazine in the World". Notably, this issue is also the first to feature an FF fan mail section, the first step in Lee's creation of the Mighty Marvel Fan Base. The vintage Jack Kirby cover design uses the sharp, stark grays of the New York City skyline to highlight the bright reds of Johnny Blaze's flames and the pristine white of the brand new Fantasti-car.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st SA Sub-Mariner (5/62)
In the spirit of recycling, both DC and Marvel dusted off and rethought their classic Golden Age characters in the rough-and-tumble marketplace of the early Silver Age, including one of the most intriguing and unusual of all Timely creations, the fearsome Sub-Mariner. While the Golden Age Namor was a pulpy, tortured anti-hero, the Silver Age Namor was more aggressively antagonistic, with his antipathy the FF exacerbated by his longing for the fetching Sue Storm. In this first Silver Age appearance of the distinctive character, Lee and Kirby ratchet up the action and drama to a hyperbolic degree, firmly establishing this series as one of the most gloriously inventive of all Silver Age Marvel titles.

This is one of the brightest and cleanest copies of this issue we have come across in some time, you could even say it glows, and just in time for the holidays! But in all seriousness, condition notwithstanding, rumors are swirling about the FF MCU reboot, as well as the eventual introduction of Namor into the cinematic juggernaut, and this is ground zero for anyone who wants to make a canny investment before the price of this issue ineviatably rises, this comic is a smart buy in any condition, but this particular copy is an undeniably beautiful example of this classic.

Origin & 1st Dr. Doom; bondage cover (7/62); Dr. Doom Movie Rumors!
Dr. Doom, according to Jack Kirby, was modeled after the Middle Age concept of Death, hence the skull-like mask and hood. Kirby claimed that Doom, a genius inventor, sorcerer, and leader of Latveria, is inherently evil, and as a result of his facial disfigurement and hatred for Reed Richards, he lashes out against the world in perpetual vengeance. He is one of comics' greatest and most complex villains ever created and he makes his debut here in Fantastic Four #5. Created by the team of Kirby and Stan Lee, this character has been copied and imitated many times over the last fifty years, most notably as one of Lucasfilm's inspirations in creating Darth Vader. This era of Kirby covers defined the industry aesthetic of the period and the dynamic composition informs the reader of what they can expect inside the book's hallowed pages.

Kirby cvr/art; 3rd SA Sub-Mariner app.
It's typical of the hard-bitten, cynical world of Silver Age Marvel to show the heroes right on the cover of their own book being turned out of their digs and jeered by crowds. It's also a sign of the clever way Stan Lee and Jack Kirby could turn everyday drabness into imaginative gold, almost as though they were thinking big by going small. It had certainly had never been tried before, so readers were turned on by the originality and audacity of Marvel's ideas, and stuck around for the strong storytelling and attention-grabbing art. This is only the third appearance of the Sub-Mariner in the Silver Age, and Lee and Kirby have already transformed him completely from a brooding romantic demigod into a snarling, almost completely adversarial despot. Readers loved it.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st Hulk vs Thing battle
A match made in adolescent boy heaven, it was only a matter of time before Lee and Kirby took their two most popular creations and set them against each other to see what would happen. The result, unsurprisingly, was a smash success, leading to nearly annual throwdowns between the two misunderstood behemoths. This first contretemps occurred while the nascent Hulk was still in his initial, reasonably intelligent phase, making him an even more formidable opponent for the streetwise scrapping Thing. The reduction of the green goliath in later years to a monosyllabic brute made the recurring battles less and less challenging and more like a standard-issue monster mash, but this classic first meeting still retains its punch and excitement, and fans young and old still feel that special tingle when encountering this classic image.

Sub-Mariner app.; bondage cover by Kirby & Ditko
When Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, made his Silver Age debut in Fantastic Four #4 after a nearly two-decade absence, comic book readers rejoiced. Namor was always more of an anti-hero due to his persistent frustration with man's ignorant exploits concerning the sea, and of course, his obsession with the Invisible Woman. In FF #14, Namor comes back to duke it out with the Fantastic Four after once again abducting Sue Richards. Not a good look for Namor in these modern times, but such things were de rigueur in the 1960s.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. Rama Tut
Fantastic Four #19 weaves a tale in which the team travels back in time in search of a cure for Alicia Masters' blindness which leads them into a showdown with the sinister Rama-Tut aka Nathaniel Richards, a time-traveling being that has taken on many guises in the Marvel Universe including Kang the Conqueror and Immortus. Featuring a classic Jack Kirby cover design, this is extremely likely to be an issue whose antangonist will be a featured villain in the MCU. Many classic Fantastic Four issues are still affordable, but that designation could change any day now.

This second-highest graded copy is a sight for sore eyes, bearing only the most miniscule of imperfections, the overall appearance is just glimmering. Crisp hues adorn the quartet of heroes as the pale background is even and clean, the construction is rock-solid with wonderful centering and sharp corners, have we fawned over this issue enough? This is a recommended investment book.
