Kirby cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Fantastic Four; 1st Mole Man; the Marvel Age begins here (11/61)
Inspired by DC's top-selling smorgasbord of heroes, the Justice League of America, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby decided to go one better when tasked with creating a copycat title for Marvel. Instead of a mashup of existing heroes, Lee and Kirby struck upon the novel concept of creating a super-family, allowing young readers to instantly identify with the day-to-day squabbles and growing pains of the protagonists while still enjoying liberal doses of heroism. This dynamic and historic first issue hit the ground running with an action-packed cover and one of the most thrilling and engrossing origin stories of the era. Disney's purchase of Fox Studios has given Marvel back their rights to the Fantastic Four properties so expect another silver screen reboot in the MCU in the coming years. Hopefully, the third time will be the charm! Silver Age Marvel keys like this one are always in high demand and there is no sign of abatement anytime soon.
Vibrant colors dominate this classic cover, the orange Thing and blazing red and yellow Torch almost sear your retina, while the cool greens and greys provide a backdrop that allows the hotter hues to really shine. This is an impressive copy of FF #1, at a respectable grade, a worthy investment for First Family of Marvel fans.

Overstreet Guide 2018 VF (8.0) value = $30,000.

While many Signature Series feature their prize autographs across the front cover image, there are collectors who blanche at seeing ink marks across classic images, no matter whose hand it comes from. Thus, check out this beauty! In a clever move that we're surprised hasn't been done more often, Stan the Man signed this copy on the back cover making this the best of both worlds -- a clean and attractive copy that still bears the comic master's seal of approval!

Marvel's meteoric rise in the early 60s was due largely in part to the innovations featured in The Fantastic Four as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby collaborated more than they had on any project before. Their synergy created a harmonious relationship between art and story that set the precedent for their future output as their art-driven scripts became known as the "Marvel Style" of writing. The family dynamic of the comic was pioneering for the time as Lee and Kirby created original characters that readers could relate to, due to their unique interpersonal relationships and shared experiences. Fantastic Four put Marvel on the map at a crucial time in their development and turned them into a publishing powerhouse. The true premiere of what has become what we all know of as Marvel Comics today, this copy of Fantastic Four #1 is impressive at its grade boasting off-white/white pages and a strong color palette.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st SA Sub-Mariner (5/62)
In the spirit of recycling, both DC and Marvel dusted off and rethought their classic Golden Age characters in the rough-and-tumble marketplace of the early Silver Age, including one of the most intriguing and unusual of all Timely creations, the fearsome Sub-Mariner. While the Golden Age Namor was a pulpy, tortured anti-hero, the Silver Age Namor was more aggressively antagonistic, with his antipathy the FF exacerbated by his longing for the fetching Sue Storm. In this first Silver Age appearance of this distinctive character, Lee and Kirby ratchet up the action and drama to a hyperbolic degree, firmly establishing this series as one of the most gloriously inventive of all Silver Age Marvel titles.

Origin & 1st Dr. Doom; bondage cover (7/62); Dr. Doom Movie Rumors!
Doom, according to Jack "The King" Kirby, was modeled after the Middle Age's envisioning of Death, hence the hood. Kirby claims that Doom, a genius inventor, sorcerer, and leader of Latveria, is inherently evil. As a result of his facial disfigurement and hatred for Reed Richards, he lashes out against the world in perpetual vengeance. He is one of the greatest and most complex villains ever created in the world of comics and he first appears here in Fantastic Four # 5. Created by the team of Kirby and Stan "The Man" Lee, this character has been copied and imitated many times over the last fifty years, most notably as the inspiration for Darth Vader.

1st Kurrgo; UFO cover (10/62)
n Fantastic Four #7, the seeds that would eventually grow into the inspiration for the X-Men are sown by Kirby and Lee as they weave a tale that highlights the sense of otherness and fear of alienation that the new wave of Marvel superheroes were acutely aware of, as is evinced by the FF's reluctance to attend a dinner in their honor in Washington D.C. Their trepidation is soon validated as their hosts turn on them and they beat a hasty retreat back to the safety of the Baxter building, only to discover they have been unknowingly drafted into preventing a cosmic calamity by the shifty Kurrgo, Master of Planet X. The rest of the story is a real nail-biter of mega, and miniature, proportions all at once.

Much has been said about the impact and legacy the humanistic tales dreamt up by Lee, and fleshed out by Kirby have had on the Silver Age and beyond, and this issue of Fantastic Four is simply brimming with game-changing ideas. Never before had simple comic book characters exuded such gravitas, and expressed so many of the emotions that common mortals experience on a daily basis.

Kirby cvr/art; Lee & Kirby appear in story; Dr. Doom app.
By the time of this issue's appearance, Stan Lee's plan to remake the struggling Marvel into an industry powerhouse was gaining steam and support. Part of the reason for this success was his willingness to treat the Marvel bullpen as stars in their own right, culminating in this clever and beloved issue in which Lee and Kirby guest star in their own popular comic. It was both a winking in-joke meant to appeal to regular readers, and an unmistakable gauntlet thrown down to competitors that Marvel had arrived.

origin & 1st app. of Impossible Man; FF origin retold
One of the first indicators that Lee and Kirby were pushing the FF book beyond the boundaries of standard hero comics was the appearance of the Impossible Man, a character intended largely as a comic foil and prankster. With the wry tone and increasingly bizarre style of the book already established, this flight of fancy allowed the bullpen boatloads of creative freedom for their next groundbreaking FF epics.

Kirby cvr; classic Kirby/Ditko art; 1st app. Watcher (a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe) (4/63)
An unusual treat awaited readers within the pages of this issue, as the lively, kinetic inks of Steve Ditko met the ferocious, muscular figures and layouts of Jack "The King" Kirby. In addition, Lee and Kirby once again upped the ante on strange goings-on by introducing the Watcher, one of the most intriguing meta-creations of the Marvel Silver Age, whose influence over the series' galactic ambitions would only increase as time went on and would lead directly to the legendary Galactus /Surfer saga of later years. For some reason, this is one of the scarcer early FF issues, especially in nice condition.

Sub-Mariner app.; bondage cover by Kirby & Ditko
When Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, made his Silver Age debut in Fantastic Four #4 after a nearly two-decade absence, comic book readers rejoiced. Namor was always more of an anti-hero due to his persistent frustration with man's ignorant exploits concerning the sea, and of course, his obsession with the Invisible Woman. In FF #14, Namor comes back to duke it out with the Fantastic Four after once again abducting Sue Richards. Not a good look for Namor in these modern times, but such things were de rigueur in the 1960s.

If you are into shrinking then this is the comic book for you! Featuring microscopic versions of the Fantastic Four, Dr. Doom, a world named Sub-Atomica, and of course, Ant-Man, in his first crossover appearance in the pages of FF, this is one heck of a miniature masterpiece. In short, the FF keeps getting shrunk down by Dr. Doom, whom they eventually encounter causing havok in a tiny kingdom, after being captured they are saved by Ant-Man. Many of the elements of the sub-atomic universe explored in "Ant-Man" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp" are important factors in this issue.

Kirby cvr/art; classic Hulk vs. Thing cover; 2nd SA Captain America app. (cameo)
Never let it be said that Marvel wouldn't give the people what they wanted. It's understandable that young readers would instantly gravitate to the two misshapen beasts starring on this cover. The Hulk is a perfect personification of the uncontrollable rage, emotional turmoil, and alienation felt by any growing boy fighting through hormones and the general pains of childhood, while the Thing appealed to any kid whose own body seemed to be clumsily betraying them through the pains and troubles of growing up. Pit these two beasts against each other and you're guaranteed to sell out on day one, as Marvel happily discovered and continued to exploit throughout the Silver and Bronze Age, almost annually. Here, the showdowns had not yet exhausted their potential, and you can still feel the joy of inventiveness and novelty bursting forth in Kirby's typically epic cover image.

1st app. Lockjaw and the Inhumans
For decades, comic book fans have been talking about mutants and metas but now we are about to enter the world of the Inhumans, whose network series is set to debut this September (with the first episode filmed in IMAX to be screened in theaters across the country - a first ever for a TV show) there is lots of buzz surrounding this kingdom of super-humans. A fan favorite since this very issue, the Inhumans are starting to garner widespread popularity as the spotlight shines. Many readers are starting to investigate the Inhumans and their awesome legacy. Intrigue and betrayal, much like what we see in Game of Thrones, is prevalent, but on a cosmic level. With the mysteriously silent Black Bolt, his wife Medusa, and their mighty pet, Lockjaw leading the colony in the Blue Area of the moon, the Inhumans are sure to become as popular as all the other Marvel heroes we are assaulted with regularly, and rightly so.
