Origin & 1st Dr. Doom; bondage cover (7/62); Dr. Doom Movie Rumors!
Dr. Doom, according to Jack Kirby, was modeled after the Middle Age concept of Death, hence the skull-like mask and hood. Kirby claimed that Doom, a genius inventor, sorcerer, and leader of Latveria, is inherently evil, and as a result of his facial disfigurement and hatred for Reed Richards, he lashes out against the world in perpetual vengeance. He is one of comics' greatest and most complex villains ever created and he makes his debut here in Fantastic Four #5. Created by the team of Kirby and Stan Lee, this character has been copied and imitated many times over the last fifty years, most notably as one of Lucasfilm's inspirations in creating Darth Vader. This era of Kirby covers defined the industry aesthetic of the period and the dynamic composition informs the reader of what they can expect inside the book's hallowed pages.
The saturation of this comic's colors is perfectly preserved for posterity, as well as the quality of the pages themselves. Doom is an incredibly popular villain in the Marvel stable with a large following and scores of avid collectors eager to grab every appearance of the hooded terror and this copy is sure to be snatched up by the most ardent of them all.

Overstreet Guide 2019 VF/NM (9.0) value = $16,240.

This comic is in extremely well-preserved condition with the only signs of wear-and-tear along the spine and well away from the central image of the captive heroes and their new adversary, who would go on to reign in the top ten of Marvel's rogue's gallery of villains for decades to come.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st Hulk vs Thing battle
A match made in adolescent boy heaven, it was only a matter of time before Lee and Kirby took their two most popular creations and set them against each other to see what would happen. The result, unsurprisingly, was a smash success, leading to nearly annual throwdowns between the two misunderstood behemoths. This first contretemps occurred while the nascent Hulk was still in his initial, reasonably intelligent phase, making him an even more formidable opponent for the streetwise scrapping Thing. The reduction of the green goliath in later years to a monosyllabic brute made the recurring battles less and less challenging and more like a standard-issue monster mash, but this classic first meeting still retains its punch and excitement, and fans young and old still feel that special tingle when encountering this classic image.

Kirby cvr; classic Kirby/Ditko art; 1st app. Watcher (a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe) (4/63)
An unusual treat awaited readers within the pages of this issue, as the lively, kinetic inks of Steve Ditko met the ferocious, muscular figures and layouts of Jack "The King" Kirby. In addition, Lee and Kirby once again upped the ante on strange goings-on by introducing the Watcher, one of the most intriguing meta-creations of the Marvel Silver Age, whose influence over the series' galactic ambitions would only increase as time went on and would lead directly to the legendary Galactus /Surfer saga of later years. For some reason, this is one of the scarcer early FF issues, especially in nice condition.

Kirby cvr/art; early X-Men x-over
Where once the Fantastic Four had been used to shore up interest in the inaugural issue of Amazing Spider-Man, now the X-Men were being drafted into the FF title itself to help push them on Marvel fans who might not have seen their mag. This early X-Men appearance also allowed for Jack Kirby to show off his dizzying ability to maneuver massive casts of characters through bizarre settings and situations without ever once losing the plot or the audience's patience. The gambit must have worked, as the X-Men slowly built up a loyal cult following that continued through to their eventual break-through success in the Bronze era.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. Silver Surfer, Galactus; the greatest story ever told!
White Mountain Copy
Employing the Marvel Method, in which artists worked from thumbnail plots provided by the author, Kirby and Lee collaborated on their acknowledged masterpiece, the Fantastic Four, for nearly a decade, often leading to some happy accidents and surprises -- such as this issue, when Kirby, sick of drawing spaceships, snuck a sleek, silver, surfing alien into Galactus' first appearance, stunning Lee into writing some of the most deliriously florid, melodramatic prose of his career to date (which is saying something), and launching one of the greatest arcs in comics' history. Introducing the world-eating, imperious purple god Galactus and his tormented herald the Silver Surfer into the international consciousness, there's a reason why we call this "The Greatest Story Ever Told!"
This breathtaking 9.6 copy is a stunning Silver Age key specimen. Fresh and clean colors, crisp edges, and the overall appearance of a freshly printed comic make this a rare and unparalleled find.

classic Kirby cvr/art; Silver Surfer vs. Galactus
The Surfer was famously dropped into his first appearance by Jack Kirby without warning his collaborator, Stan Lee, who was first bemused then intrigued by this bizarre and inventive new addition to the rapidly ballooning FF galaxy. By his third appearance in this landmark issue, Lee had solidified a tragic, Shakespearean arc for the new character, pitting him against his galactic master with the universe at stake and gracing him with tortured inner monologues and a questing spirit. The proof of the character's near-instantaneous acceptance with Marvel's increasingly college-aged readership is seen on this classic cover, where the upstart antagonist completely steals the focus from the book's supposed leads. Note the Thing's bewilderment at this unexpected turn of events.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. Black Panther; Inhumans app.
Stan Lee kept his fingers on the pulse of the streets during the turbulence of 1960's America as he masterfully addressed topics of popular concern in the comics he created. In an inspired move, Lee and Jack Kirby brought Marvel's very first black superhero to life, T'Challa, the Black Panther. To say that this was history in the making would be an understatement. Considering the unbridled success of the character's silver screen career, this comic, the Black Panther's very first appearance, is sure to be a prime focus of collectors. The response to Black Panther's entry into the MCU's film roster has prompted a spike in sales of Panther titles. With first appearances being the most valuable, this comic has seen a meteoric rise in value over the last few years.
On this crisp cover, you can discern the Panther's silhouette amidst the background contrasting against the colorful Fantastic Four in their flanking maneuver. The image of T'Challa leaping from the nightscape is preserved wonderfully on this copy where subtle details may be lost on a lower grade example. With the coming expansion of the Black Panther franchise, this book is sure to continue rising in value.

Overstreet Guide 2019 NM- (9.2) value = $4,600.
