Kirby cvr/art; early X-Men x-over
Where once the Fantastic Four had been used to shore up interest in the inaugural issue of Amazing Spider-Man, now the X-Men were being drafted into the FF title itself to help push them on Marvel fans who might not have seen their mag. This early X-Men appearance also allowed for Jack Kirby to show off his dizzying ability to maneuver massive casts of characters through bizarre settings and situations without ever once losing the plot or the audience's patience. The gambit must have worked, as the X-Men slowly built up a loyal cult following that continued through to their eventual break-through success in the Bronze era.

1st app. Lockjaw and the Inhumans
For decades, comic book fans have been talking about mutants and metas but now we are about to enter the world of the Inhumans, a fan favorite since this very issue, the Inhumans are starting to garner widespread popularity as the spotlight shines. Many readers are starting to investigate the Inhumans and their awesome legacy. Intrigue and betrayal, much like what we see in Game of Thrones, is prevalent, but on a cosmic level. With the mysteriously silent Black Bolt, his wife Medusa, and their mighty pet, Lockjaw leading the colony in the Blue Area of the moon, the Inhumans are sure to become as popular as all the other Marvel heroes we are assaulted with regularly, and rightly so.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. Silver Surfer, Galactus; the greatest story ever told!
Employing the Marvel Method, in which artists worked from thumbnail plots provided by the author, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee collaborated on their acknowledged masterpiece, the Fantastic Four, for nearly a decade, often leading to some happy accidents and surprises -- such as this issue, when Kirby, sick of drawing spaceships, snuck a sleek, silver, surfing alien into Galactus' first appearance, stunning Lee into writing some of the most deliriously florid, melodramatic prose of his career to date (which is saying something), and launching one of the greatest arcs in comics' history, introducing the world-eating, imperious purple god Galactus and his tormented herald the Silver Surfer into the international consciousness. There is a reason we at the office call this "The Greatest Story Ever Told!"

This important Silver Age key is in excellent condition. This issue has been increasing in value exponentially over the past few years in expectation of a Fantastic Four franchise reboot in the MCU. High-grade copies of this book are almost impossible to keep in our inventory, as they are purchased as soon as they are acquired. This copy has all of the elements that combine to achieve an NM- status, beautiful colors, a tight spine, and sharp corners, simply a no-brainer for investment comic bidders.

1st full app. of Galactus; 2nd app. Silver Surfer
Picking up where FF #48 left off, the continuing saga of the First Family of Marvel v. Galactus and his herald, Silver Surfer, reaches a boiling point with the Earth hanging in the balance. The appearance of the Planet Eater will be the cause for great alarm every time the character shows up in future issues, as Galactus is one of the most powerful and feared villains in the entire Marvel Universe. Assistance from unlikely sources, namely Alicia Masters and the ostensibly neutral Watcher, end up frustrating the Devourer of Worlds and saving the Earth for the time being, while simultaneously launching the Silver Surfer on a trajectory of continuing popularity. Is there any doubt that this epic tale will be adopted into the cosmic scope of the MCU in years to come?

This NM example of FF #49 is truly a sight to behold, the black background is free of any hint of wear, a feat unto itself as dark backgrounds tend to amplify even the smallest condition issue. Subtle tones of green are pushed to the fore by glowing reds which frame the Surfer perfectly, while the FF avoid the destruction, seemingly leaping off of the page thanks to Jack Kirby's archetypal cover illustration.

classic Kirby cvr/art; Silver Surfer vs. Galactus
The Surfer was famously dropped into his first appearance by Jack Kirby without warning his collaborator, Stan Lee, who was first bemused then intrigued by this bizarre and inventive new addition to the rapidly ballooning FF galaxy. By his third appearance in this landmark issue, Lee had solidified a tragic, Shakespearean arc for the new character, pitting him against his galactic master with the universe at stake and gracing him with tortured inner monologues and a questing spirit. The proof of the character's near-instantaneous acceptance with Marvel's increasingly college-aged readership is seen on this classic cover, where the upstart antagonist completely steals the focus from the book's supposed leads. Note the Thing's bewilderment at this unexpected turn of events.

Kirby cvr/art; 1st app. Black Panther; Inhumans app.
Stan Lee kept his finger on the pulse of the streets during the turbulence of 1960's America as he masterfully addressed topics of popular concern in the comics he created. In an inspired move, Lee and Jack Kirby brought to life Marvel's very first black superhero, T'Challa the Black Panther. To say that this was history in the making would be an understatement. Considering the unbridled success of the character's silver screen career, this comic, the Black Panther's very first appearance, is sure to be a prime focus of collectors.

This dark cover is in impressive condition, the bright yellow moon and the flames of the Human Torch contrast with the grey and black surroundings to create a beautiful and classic illustration that is extremely well-preserved. The exciting and groundbreaking introduction of T'Challa made this issue an important key in the past, but since the mindblowing box office success of "Black Panther," the value and desirability of the book have gone through the roof. High-grade copies of FF #52 are, without question, one of the most popular comics we've had at auction of late, and with a sequel to the blockbuster imminent, we expect more great things from this Silver Age key.
