1st Lois Lane solo comic; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 7 (CBI)
When referring to Lois Lane's first lead appearance, one might look to the 70's feminist motto, "You've come a long way, baby." By 1957, Lois had indeed come a long way since accompanying the Man of Steel in Action Comics #1. Two decades later, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's leading lady, love interest, and headline-hunting reporter for the Daily Planet commanded her own title spanning from March '58- Sept '74. As immortalized by the graceful, classy pen of Kurt Schaffenberger. Lois was an amalgamation of influences in the lives of her creators, including model Joanne Carter (who would later marry Siegel), and based on Torchy Blane, a smoldering sexy reporter portrayed in a popular series of 1930's films. With the beginning of the Silver Age, Superman's focus turned towards science fiction based storylines appealing to his predominantly young male readership. During this period Lois continued to vie for his affections, competing with her rival Lana Lang. Created by Bill Finger and John Sikela and first appearing in Superboy #10, Lang was Superman's teenage age love from Smallville and later a distant friend of Clark Kent. Lana appears in this issue and remains a frequent and important character well into the Modern Age, one of many Superman characters with the initials "LL." As a microcosm of American society, this first appearance, and subsequent issues, address the rapidly changing roles of women, marriage and divorce prior to the sexual revolution of the 60's. As iconic and lasting as Superman himself, Lois Lane has been his main romantic interest for the last three quarters of a century, and is to many the quintessential comic book girlfriend. This spin-off tryout comic is one of the scarcest of Superman keys and is a DC collectors hidden treasure.
