Bob Kane cvr/art; classic hypodermic needle/bondage cover (1/40)
The book's jarring cover inaugurates a tradition that has remained nearly undisturbed to the modern day, with the Caped Crusader as the featured star of this venerable title. This classic image captures all the gruesome drama and atmosphere beloved of year-one Batman and shows why the character quickly vaulted to the top of the collective consciousness of Golden Age comic readers. The horrific mood and tone of the inaugural Bat-tales give them a feel unlike anything that came after, directly inspiring the early-70s Adams revamp and the look of the blockbuster 1989 movie. The hero's booming popularity is evident not only in his cover appearance but by the bright-red banner assuring readers he would appear in every issue thereafter.
The harrowing, classic image on the cover of Detective #35 is a personal fave of many fans of the down and dirty Golden Age. This particular copy has retained its vibrant green and yellow color scheme quite well considering the years this comic has been around. While there are some signs of wear the overall presentation of this book is quite impressive. Without question, there will be intense bidding over this, all Batman books from this era are surefire catnip (batnip?) to serious collectors, as pre-Robin issues are always continuing to appreciate in value.

Overstreet Guide 2020 VG- (3.5) value = $31,850.

Artist Information

A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
