tabloid-sized; VERY RARE; the only copy we have ever seenThese undated two-cent versions of “Comic Cuts” were published by Treble Publications in Buffalo, New York. According to Bob Beerbohm’s Overstreet article, “The Birth of the Modern Comic Book,” publisher H.L. Baker acquired the right to publish this title in the United States due to their popularity in British publications. It is likely this two-cent version of “Comic Cuts” preceded the five-cent version that premiered in May of 1934. If this is indeed the case, this extremely rare tabloid-sized publication represents one of the very first comics ever published in America! The fact that these pages are not in full color, as the five-cent copies were, lends more credence to the theory of an earlier publication date. According to the Overstreet article “Comic Cuts” was the direct inspiration for National Periodicals’ “New Fun Comics.” The consignor of these relics has stated that he has been unable to discover any other evidence of surviving copies of “Comic Cuts” or “Funny Wonder” making these potentially unique examples of some of the earliest American comic publications extremely valuable and desirable historical documents.
