Highest GradedThe ingenious plot of this comic sees the JSA doing battle with the aptly named Psycho Pirate, a villain whose nefarious plot involves six different “emotions,” and as a result, the members of the Justice Society each have to go on a solo mission to stop the coordinated plans and defeat the mysterious evildoer. After tangling with love, hate, fear, conceit, greed, and despair, Psycho Pirate is revealed to be the demented Charles Halstead, a close friend of Rex Morgan, newspaper publisher. Using the anthology format to plot the storylines of this issue was a major inspiration, kudos to the editorial team at DC for helping normalize the concept of the self-contained adventure. Wrapped in an amusing, yet creepy, Joe Gallagher cover, this issue is perfectly summed up by the puppetry design that shows the JSA dancing about as an unseen threat manipulates their fates.
One of two highest graded copies known, this All Star #23 is simply sumptuous to gaze upon, we don’t suggest eating Golden Age comics, but this issue looks darn close to a gourmet meal. Deep, unmarred blacks and bloody reds adorn this cover, as the excellent Joe Gallagher illustration basks in a bright orange spotlight, and the detailed grey shades of the puppeteer’s hands complete the pretty picture. This is a stunning QES-certified classic that could have been printed yesterday, one determined bidder will be giving this wonderful book a new home, and it goes without saying, it will be a happy home indeed.
