Joe Kubert art; Batman & Superman guest star in this very special episode (8-9/47); 1st meeting of Batman, Superman & Wonder Woman
Highest GradedWith the overwhelming success of the Justice League, it's easy to forget that the original Justice Society was originally bereft one Kryptonian and one Dark Knight. DC initially used the JSA solely to push their stable of newer heroes, afraid to ruin the success of their two main stars. They needn't have worried -- the appetite of wartime hero readers was massive, and multiple titles could handle the load, leading to Superman and Batman finally popping up as guest stars well after the war effort ended in this classic issue boasting a typically cheerful period cover.
This exquisite copy of All Star Comics #36 is one of three topping the census, and it is truly a sight to behold. Irwin Hasen’s cover design shows the JSA marching off to do battle with ne’er-do-wells the world over, with a little hand from their pals, Superman and Batman. While this issue was released in the post-war era, the patriotic posture and American spirit still shine through on this lovely cover. The elegant blue wash that anchors the background is as clean and clear as it was back in 1947, the colors have not faded and the overall construction is as good as it gets where Golden Age books are concerned. Another winner in this Event Auction, bid early and often.
