Kentucky CollectionThis issue features the second cover appearance of Wesley Dodds, the Golden Age Sandman, just the first of many characters throughout comics history to use that moniker. Created by Gardner Fox and artist Bert Christman, who was sadly shot down in the Pacific in 1942, Dodds graces this Creig Flessel cover adorned in his trademark gas mask and fedora, using his sleeping gas gun on unsuspecting criminals. The story within features Dodds reuniting with some old Navy pilot buddies to solve a mystery concerning the mysterious deaths of several of their shipmates. In addition to the Sandman story, this issue also features work by Jerry Siegel, Wayne Boring, Sheldon Moldoff, Bill Finger, and Bob Kane. Creig Flessel’s cover design for Adventure #42 is a true classic of the era, hearkening back to the pulp roots of the comic book industry, this moody and foreboding cover draws viewers in and sparks curiosity as to what chilling treats await within the book’s pages. Perfectly in lockstep with DC’s early output, this is a stunner, the greys and yellows in the background contrast powerfully, allowing the combatant’s suits to really pop, the hues on this second-highest graded copy are deep and resonant, combine this appeal with the solid structure of this copy and you have one seriously impressive Golden Age comic book that promises to be an auction highlight.
