2nd app. of Flash and Hawkman (1st cvr app.)

DC was hedging their bets on their recently introduced speedy superhero when they decided to feature his co-star, Hawkman, on the cover of only the second issue in the title’s run. Maybe it made sense to test the waters and see if Flash or Hawkman would sell more copies, or maybe they had a Hawkman cover already completed, whatever the case, Flash Comics #2 features a humdinger of an illustration by Dennis Neville, the first time the winged hero made a solo cover appearance. Since both heroes struck a chord, they would continue on, sharing this book, but with Flash owning up to his bragging rights as title hero, as he would go on to become one of the biggest names in DC’s stable, throughout the Golden Age and well beyond, while Hawkman would hold steady as a popular star in his own right. This book is painfully rare with just over thirty copies on the census.
The artist behind Hawkman was one Dennis Neville, who began his career in the industry working on Superman with Joe Shuster, and Slam Bradley, before being the first to illustrate Hawkman, and this, the winged-heroes first solo cover. This issue is incredibly scarce, making it the source of much brouhaha when a copy surfaces in the market. Although this conserved copy from the esteemed Rockford pedigree is graded a 6.5, there are only nine other examples higher up the census. With news of Hawkman joining the DCEU in “Black Adam” there can be no downside to obtaining this issue.

Overstreet Guide 2020 FN+ (6.5) value = $6,010.
