Like Harold Lloyd to Superman's Charlie Chaplin, the Flash was the streamlined, all-American, charismatic response to the dark, adolescent power fantasies represented by the Man of Steel, Batman, and Captain America. Always smiling, always broad-shouldered, and unfailingly charming and eager, Jay Garrick's football-playing science whiz raced effortlessly through adventure after adventure, giving off the can-do spirit that kept America from hitting rock bottom throughout the Depression and subsequent war years. It's interesting to note that, despite the immediate popularity of the character, DC hedged its bets as it had with Action and Detective, rotating Flash's appearances on the covers with backup heroes in attempt to curry favor for these aspiring characters with as many readers as possible. No matter, this just meant readers were treated to exciting genre images from the likes of Shelly Moldoff, whose cover to issue 3 remains a classic even without the Scarlet Speedster.
Hailing from the respected Larson pedigree, this admirable copy of Flash Comics #3 is the standalone third-highest graded known, with only two others above it. The anthology book follows the DC tradition of phasing in their heroes over time while sprinkling in standard pulp fare, or other new creations to see what would take hold with readers in the uncharted comic marketplace. There are some very impressive colors on this cover that are exploding with vim and verve which is extremely rare for books from this period. There are only twenty-five copies registered on the CGC census, making this an unquestionably rare find, particularly thanks to the excellent condition it has remained in over the decades.

Overstreet Guide 2020 VF+ (8.5) value = $4,807.
