This intoxicating page from the first issue of Chris Claremont’s reinvention of the X-Men followed hot on the heels of Giant-Size X-Men #1. This piece heralds the official relaunch of the title after years of reprints and cancellation scares. On this page, the original X-Men deal with the aftermath of confronting Professor X about leaving the reconfigured team, Cyclops is the lone holdout, while Wolverine, characteristically, is having none of their nonsense. This transcendent page defines the evolution of the old to the new, ushering in the beginning of Claremont’s decades-long relationship with the characters. Pen and ink. Art is in excellent condition, with glue staining professionally removed on the last panel.

The enduring appeal that these characters possess is a testament to the work Claremont, along with Dave Cockrum, gifted to the storied history of comics. They took an idea from Lee and Kirby that seemed to be their one Silver Age misfire and turned it into, quite possibly, the most-popular comic team ever. The X-Men went on to become the subject of countless spin-off titles, cartoons, video games, movies, and more. It all started here with a bunch of mostly unfamiliar characters that would connect with readers in a way no one could have anticipated. Pages from these early issues are in extraordinary demand, and rightly so.
