Gaines File Copy
The amazing talents of Wally Wood, Al Feldstein, Jack Davis, Bill Gaines, Howard Larsen, George Roussos, and Graham Ingels are on full display in this classic collaboration by some of the greats that helped make EC a legend in comics history. The standout tale in this issue is “Voodoo” a story that features a down on his luck painter who undergoes a ritual that makes his paintings similar to voodoo dolls, and with his power he exacts revenge on his enemies, only to be undone by a jar of turpentine. The other three sinister yarns in this issue follow the EC formula as well, providing shocks for readers of the era, which have not lost any of their potency today. It is no wonder that EC fans are some of the most loyal around.
With a scant fifty-two copies on the census and only two ranked above it, this example of Tales from the Crypt #26 is one of the finest around. Gaines File Copies are the gold standard for EC books, these copies were stored away in William Gaines’ personal collection for future reference, which shows tremendous foresight in an era where comics were not viewed as anything but disposable entertainment. As luck would have it, all these years later, copies of these classic pre-code horror books have been preserved in a state of near perfection.
