Ditko cover & art; origin retold; 1st Chameleon; 1st J. Jonah Jameson; Fantastic Four cover (3/63) Comic Book Impact rating of 9 (CBI)Spider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 was an overnight sensation, leading to a hurriedly prepared solo title from co-creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. (Marvel still brought in the top-selling Fantastic Four on the cover as insurance.) The book remains one of the cornerstones of comic collecting--featuring the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson as one of the most iconic supporting characters in the history of comics. The book is also notable for including The Chameleon as Spidey’s first supervillain. The shape-shifting spy has been one of the major missing figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is finally set to make his big-screen debut in this year’s Kraven the Hunter film.
A nice, bright, and solid mid-grade copy of an essential classic, this AMS #1 has a small amount of Marvel chipping along the right edge, as is the case with many Silver Age books from the publisher, who had resorted to using lighter paper stock as a cost-cutting method during their lean years. The colors pop off this cover powerfully contrasting with the intentionally muted background, designed to focus attention on the new crop of heroes Marvel was churning out on a seemingly monthly basis. Everyone who considers themselves to be a committed investment collector needs to have one of these books in their portfolio, although Amazing Fantasy #15 is the prime Spidey book, his first self-titled issue is a worthy, and valuable comic unto itself, one which keeps going up in value with each announcement of a Spider-Man movie, TV series or video game to name a few.
Overstreet Guide 2020 FN (6.0) value = $8,400.
