Jack Kirby cover, 1st meeting of Spider-Man & some Avengers (1st met Iron Man in issue #3), 2nd appearance of Kang the Conqueror & Wonder Man
Avengers #11 became an instant collectible as another rare opportunity for Jack Kirby to craft a classic cover image of Spider-Man. There's also been decades of discussion over whether Steve Ditko ended up enhancing Spidey's pose, while others speculate on added contributions by Dick Ayers, Bob Powell, and others. Looming over it all is Stan Lee hoping Spider-Man would bring in new readers while the Avengers team was in flux. (Despite being on the controversial cover, Iron Man's disappeared since faking the death of Tony Stark in
Tales of Suspense #61.)
"The Mighty Avengers Meet Spider-Man!" is officially Spider-Man's first meeting with the entire super team, although Kang the Conqueror (in his second appearance) kicks things off by creating a Spidey android to trick the Avengers. Wonder Man also makes his second appearance in a flashback amidst this legendary issue crammed full of character cameos.
